Orym practicing Zeph'aeratam - Lap Pun Cheung

The Zeph'aeratam are a series of martial movements, almost balletic in nature, practiced by the Air Ashari of Zephrah.[1]

The movement forms go from slow to fast, and fast to slow with blade out. Orym practiced almost daily, and while traveling would balance on the railing of the skyship.[2] After his blade Seedling was enchanted by the Wildmother, he became familiar with it and its new properties with additional practice of the Zeph'aeratam, revealing that he could now shoot Grasping Vines from it.[3]

When the party was separated and Orym was wrestling with the issues of whether they could affect the outcome of a battle with a god-eater, while on watch he noticed wisps of small sprite-like local spirits moving and drifting around the party. Prism Grimpoppy cast Bigby's Hand on him, lifting him up to dance with the spirits, performing for the first time a weaponless Zeph'aeratam among the firefly-like sprites and reflecting on the need to appreciate beauty and joy amid even the worst of times.[4]

Many days later, when the reunited Bells Hells visited Zadash on their way to Eiselcross, Orym spent some time alone outside with Ishta, the ominous blade they had taken from the fallen Otohan Thull. In a particularly intense Zeph'aeratam routine he became accustomed to the different weight and handling of the blade (which was larger and heavier than Seedling), ending it exhausted.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Liam O'Brien created the lore behind the Tempest Blades (including their fighting style) after he asked Marisha Ray about the military tradition of the Air Ashari and she encouraged him to develop the idea himself.[6]
