Zemniaz was one of several floating cities during the Age of Arcanum and home to the society of Zeidel. It was destroyed during the Calamity, when it crashed into what is now known as the Zemni Fields of Wildemount.
History[]
Zemniaz was built during the Age of Arcanum, and was smaller than its rival Aeor.[1] It was one of several floating cities in Exandria and, like the others, levitated using brumestone.[2] Zemniaz was home to the society of Zeidel, an erudite and powerful society.[1] Halas Lutagran unhappily described it as "a half-cocked mageocracy steeped in extremely bureaucratic ways of governance".[3] The city was overseen by a council[1] and held public debates on major issues, including one on the moral implications of conducting magical experiments on prisoners of Ghor Dranas, and another on the war with the gods.[2]
The city crashed at some time during the Calamity, like almost all of the other floating cities. It landed in the Zemni Fields in Wildemount, where survivors would eventually establish the Dwendalian Empire.[4] The Zemnian language and the culture of the Empire is descended from the language and culture of Zeidel.[5][1]
Notable people[]
- Halas Lutagran, an archmage who served on the council of Zeidel and eventually left due to frustration with its restrictions.[5][1]
Trivia[]
- The Vestige of Divergence called Mythcarver, a longsword wielded by Scanlan Shorthalt in Campaign One: Vox Machina, was forged in Zemniaz as a collaboration between a master arcanist/blacksmith and the champion who would become its first wielder; she was an astonishing singer, and songs and magic were woven into the blade with each fold of metal.[6]
- While most of the cultural legacy of Zemniaz is in Wildemount, since it is where it landed, there is one isolated Zemnian community in the gnomish village of Seedfeld, in Issylra.[7] It was founded at the beginning of the Marrow War by people fleeing the conflict and looking for a better life in Issylra.[8]
