Biography[]

Background[]

Xarlo - MiddiMidori

Xarlo was a worshiper of Ondra who lived in isolation, interacting only with animals, until the ranger Wild Cullen encouraged him to seek connection. That, among other reasons, led the simiah to team up with the Menagerie and become an adventurer.

"Critical Role plays Daggerheart" (Sx83)[]

The Menagerie's first job was to fix the Velvet Grove after some of its inhabitants asked them for help.

After staying for a bit in the house of a veteran adventurer, Everett, who told them to find Wild Cullen, the Menagerie went to the forest. Xarlo and Sir Danté Terrapin acted as scouts for a bit, after hearing strange sound; eventually, the group encountered Echo, a two-headed owl who demanded that they prove their worth before allowing them to continue, so Xarlo showed his symbol of Ondra, proving himself as a friend of nature. Later, the Menagerie was attacked by corrupted hedge bears, and although two of them were defeated, the third one was spared, and Xarlo used his healing magic to restore the animal and get rid of its corruption, while sharing a story of his previous (and more positive) encounter with a bear. Later, the adventurers found a corpse, and Xarlo recognized him as Wild Cullen, so after dealing with some beasts that attacked them, the seraph built a cairn to put the fallen ranger to rest, and then combined his powers with Bunnie's music to help their friends recover while they were resting. When they finally found the source of the corruption in the forest, Xarlo tried to use his magic to cleanse it, but this summoned the now-corrupted Glen Warder, Boko, who attacked them; with some effort, the adventurers contained it long enough to get rid of the corruption, and the fane guardian recovered his senses before hitting Xarlo.

"The Menagerie Returns!" (Sx84)[]

The adventurers (minus Pango, who went underground to do his own research) decided to go to Bunnie's hometown in order to find Dyson, and when they finally arrived, a few days later, Xarlo immediately purchased some fish from an orc merchant to feed his dogs. Bunnie brought them to the Lily Locket Lounge, where they encouraged her to perform instead of an injured co-worker, and thanks to that same performer they learned that Dyson had been seen in town recently.

Following the clues they had, the adventurers went to a casino, where Xarlo, who loved dice games even if he didn't understand them, started playing, willing to lose some money, although he ended up getting surprisingly lucky. Meanwhile Kexon and Bunnie located Dyson, and after some interrogation, they learned that he had taken a "package" to the forest on the orders of Mortimer Kroatona, a member of the local mafia family. Xarlo asked Ondra for help, and his deity sent him a vision of the gangster (a big ribbet) smoking cigarettes in a basement. The Menagerie went into the sewers looking for Mortimer's hiding place, and eventually they found it behind a secret door in a wall, where the Kroatona gangster was staying with some of his agents. A battle ensued, and Xarlo used his Spirit Weapon ability to throw his silver axe, hurting two people very badly before returning to his hand; at one point he noticed an amulet Mortimer was using as a necklace, and when Bunnie slept him with Slumber, the simiah took the change to steal the item and walk away. He became completely fascinated by the amulet, and refused to let go of it. After the fight was over the group (using magic and lies) convinced Mortimer that his men had betrayed him, and that one of them had probably stolen his necklace; after saying that Bunnie telepathically told Xarlo that they weren't looking for him, and the seraph decided to put on the amulet. However, more gangsters arrived, and Mortimer got more suspicious, so the adventurers looked for ways to escape, and Oppy grabbed Danté and Xarlo and brought them with him casting Blink Out; however, they realized soon after that Bunnie and Sweetpea had been captured.

"Ménagerie a Trois" (Sx85)[]

While Kexon, Danté and Oppy were talking about what to do next, Xarlo examined the amulet he had stolen and put it on, determining that it could magically make him bigger and stronger, if swallowed and regurgitated; Danté had expressed that the item could be used to bring their friends back, but luckily Sweetpea and Bunnie managed to escape, meeting the rest of the Menagerie and running away. When they hid in an alleyway, Sweetpea used her magic to disguise the entire group as sexy ladies to avoid being recognized when performing with Bunnie: Xarlo chose to look like a female orange simiah with feathers and a coat, with her new pendant resting on her bosom. When they returned to the Lily Locket Lounge they decided that Sweetpea, Danté and Xarlo would perform with Bunnie. On stage, they noticed signs of sabotage but they managed to use them to their advantage: Xarlo purposely broke and brought down a silk rope he was using to swing, and gave it to Danté; when ball bearings were dropped on stage, the seraph lifted Bunnie in the air so that she wouldn't trip. When all the performances were done, Mafauna, a performer who was angry because her own number had been the worst, attacked the Menagerie with her back dancers. She tried to manipulate Xarlo with her charms but he resisted her influence, making her lose confidence and making her angry, which led to her forcing Danté to attack the simiah; Kexon, however, intervened with his magic, protecting Xarlo. Eventually they managed to neutralize Mafauna and her team, making the audience believe it was all a staged fight.

They went to the local mines (closed because of a favor from a baron to the Kroatona family) to investigate, and after some effort and guile (and the booze Xarlo gave to a man so he would help them) the Menagerie reached a cave system; as they were going deeper, Xarlo decided to use his new amulet to become bigger and stronger. Eventually they found crystals with an abscess of corruption, and a glowing hydra defending it. The adventurers fought the monster, and Xarlo, after using his magic to heal Kexon a little, grabbed Danté to use him as a weapon against the hydra, but the creature was regenerating, so no damage was completely permanent. After the crystals were destroyed the hydra stopped glowing, losing its regeneration, and Xarlo joined forces with Bunnie so that she could kill the monster.
