Wulferic is a wolf and companion of Kattigan Vale. As a ranger companion, he is controlled by his ranger, Robbie Daymond, with assistance and communication from the Dungeon Master, Brennan Lee Mulligan.
Description[]
Wulferic is a massive juvenile grey wolf with black fur. He wears armor and a cowl that mirrors Kattigan's and also keeps a empty quiver strapped to his side.[4] He wears a bracer on one of his front limbs, and where he is missing the paw below the bracer, there is a magical prosthetic that looks like a blue projection.[5] His front fangs have some silver grill to make it easier for him to face some evils vulnerable to that material.[6]
Biography[]
Background[]
At some point after meeting Kattigan, Wulferic lost one of his paws because of an injury, and after some time they "scavenged" the magical means to create an ethereal prosthetic for the wolf.[7][8]
Campaign Four[]
Wulferic accompanied Kattigan when he visited Dol-Makjar and, after rescuing Thimble, attended the funeral of Thjazi Fang.[9] The following day, after a night in the forest, the wolf followed the pixie's scent to guide Kat back to Halandil Fang's home, where they had breakfast; while they were there Thaisha Lloy used Speak with Animals to talk to Wulferic and check if he was ok, confirming his well-being, as well as the powerful bond between him and the ranger.[10] When they accompanied Thimble and Occtis Tachonis to a tavern to speak to the Crow Keepers a battle ensued, during which the thieves managed to tie Wulferic's paws; however, the fight ended early after the arrival of Vaelus, and after all but one of the enemies ran away, Wulferic was freed again with Thimble's help.
The wolf left the city along with the Soldiers to find Casimir Gavendale and Talcydimir Pridesire,[11] and helped Kattigan find tracks for part of a night and a day. When they decided to stay at the home of Ulbid Morn, a gnome living in the Dahapshanee Wood, Wulferic spent some time with the group, but at sunset he left to be in the forest.[12] The following morning he returned to them when Kattigan called him after discovering that Tyranny had stolen a knife from Ulbid; the ranger gave Wulferic a note, as well as the ornamental handle of the knife (since he kept the blade), and the wolf went back to Ulbid's house. After fulfilling his mission, Wulferic returned to Kattigan with a note from Ulbid, which Kattigan read while they were in Hawthorn's Glade. While in the fey enclave, Kat made the local leader, Hawthorn, angry when he visited a cave beneath the roots of her tree, so the roots attacked them; however, Wulferic avoided then. That night, during the fight against the zombies of the Wraith Tree, Wulferic helped Kattigan fight, although he took some damage before they defeated their enemies.[13]
The Soldiers arrived to Timmony, and despite being a wolf in a country of shepherds and dogs, Wulferic didn't have any trouble, traveling with the group and even serving as Thimble's "steed" on the road. When they reached the barony of Sloak, where their targets were supposed to be, Kattigan sent Wulferic to explore; after a bit the wolf returned, and through him the adventurers knew that one of the people they were looking for was there (it was, in fact, Casimir).[14] Later, the wolf (without his armor so he would look like a common beast) was sent by Kattigan to frighten the beasts of burden of the guards protecting Casimir, causing a distraction that facilitated the Soldiers' task of taking Castle Sloak; Wulferic returned when the battle was already over, unharmed.[15]

Kattigan Vale[]
Wulferic is Kattigan's animal companion. He named him "Wulferic" likely because of its similarity to "wolf", and as Kattigan claims "I'm not good at naming things".[16] The connection between Wulferic and Kattigan is a powerful and potent magic, as is Wulferic himself.[17]
Wulferic does not seem interested in speaking with others when the spell "Speak with Animals" is cast, not out of disrespect, but preferring to "keep the counsel of his constant companion."[18]
Pincushion[]
Sometimes while Pin is wandering through the woods at night he sees Wulferic as well, and they have become playmates, with the little fox taking an unexpected dominant role.[19] At some point after meeting him, apparently admiring the cowl Wulferic wears around his neck, he began wearing one as well.[20]

Trivia[]
- His name comes from the combination of the Old English terms wulf (wolf) and rīċ (ruler).[22]
- For the entirety of the Overture of Campaign Four his name was spelled "Wulfric",[23] until new merch was revealed in which the name appeared as "Wulferic". After that, the name was corrected in other sources to reflect it.[24]
- When Kat assured he was a very sought-after bounty hunter, Wulferic sneezed.[25] While some people theorized that the wolf had sensed a lie, Robbie Daymond has confirmed that it was just how he imagined a dog would behave, randomly sneezing in that moment, although admitting that Wulferic probably knows when the ranger is "bullshitting", on a primal level.[26]
