Part I[]

Questions from Dani Carr:

  • Sam: How would FCG have felt about the prospect of the gods taking on their mortal forms and leaving Exandria without divinity for a time?
    • FCG (and Sam) would feel it was the best way out of the pickle they were in, although he'll miss the gods. He's disappointed FCG never got to further explore his connection with the Changebringer, but now he might actually meet his god.
  • Matt: Are there other Relics of the Red Solstice besides Seedling? Does the Ring of Remembrance count?
    • A thorough and nerdy "yes" to both.
  • Travis: Did Chetney plan to deliver Ashton to the Bright Queen as she requested?
    • He would have considered it. It would have been entertaining, and he thinks Ashton could handle themself in the Kryn Dynasty.
  • Matt: Do you know where the gods are now?
    • He has some inclinations on a handful of them but wants to leave it open for both himself and others playing in Exandria to explore.
  • Taliesin: Ashton seemed rather different after he came back to life after having been a living beacon. Are they different in some ways now?
    • Yes, this is the third brain transplant Ashton's had and it's going to make a difference. Plus, they fulfilled their greatest wish in life: to be irritatingly heroic in a way that was both inconvenient and obnoxious.
  • Ashley: What does Fearne think of Ira's warning that the Unseelie Court is searching for her because of Zathuda's death? Is she worried of unconcerned?
    • Unconcerned. Liam suggests Nana Morri is paying attention to it for Fearne, and Ashley agrees.
  • Matt: What will happen to the All-Minds-Burn seed on Ruidus? Could it have helped or hindered Bells Hells against Predathos?
    • With the destruction of the Weave Mind and the partial integration of the populace into Exandrian culture, one power structure is gone but one remains, forever altered by the merging of the myceit entity with the All-Minds-Burn. Marisha asks if they were supposed to do that sooner. Matt had assumed they would, and it would have altered aspects of the final confrontation. Marisha points out they freed the Ruidians from one hive mind only to create another.
  • Taliesin: Caduceus asked Bells Hells to be kind when they made the decision about what to do with Predathos. What does he think of the path they ultimately chose?
    • He's pleased because it's kind to everybody.
  • Marisha and Liam: Is it enough for Keyleth and Vax to meet up every once in a while or does it only make them miss each other even more?
    • Liam isn't inclined to fully define it yet, but it's an improvement over being dead. Vax has to find the Raven Queen in her new mortal incarnation every few decades, although Morrighan Ferus is there to do the heavy lifting with her worshippers. His life, like Keyleth's, is now extended, so even if they're separated by their duties occasionally, they actually now have more time together than they would have had Vax not given his life to the Matron.
  • Marisha and Matt: Is Laudna truly free of Delilah now that she's trapped in her chest? Was it ever possible for the two of them to completely separate?
    • Matt thought they were tethered, but Laudna's decision at the end of the campaign to embrace mortality and join Imogen may have changed this. Their decision to seek out Lieve'tel Toluse was totally unplanned and Liam improvised her solution to their problem.
  • Laura: You once said on 4SD that Imogen saw Liliana as her savior growing up, with her keeping her safe in her dreams. How does Imogen feel now that the roles are reversed and she's quite literally her mother's savior? How is their relationship now?
    • They're starting from scratch. Imogen now realizes her mother is just a person and has to get to know that person. Matt sees Liliana as a new person who has to learn to be herself and feels a lot of guilt. Imogen and her mother can still speak in their dreams.
  • Travis: Did Pop Con happen, and if so did Chetney go to it?
    • Yes, if he survived.

Montage of clips of the cast playing (and losing their way in) multiple roles simultaneously.

  • Matt: If Ludinus had been successful in releasing the events of Downfall to all Exandrians, how would that have affected things?
    • Ludinus loathed the gods and thought that if people saw the recording, they'd agree, but Matt thinks it wouldn't have flipped the culture as much as Ludinus expected. Matt thinks about how player choices could affect the world and the story whenever he has down time, like when he's driving.
  • Laura: Having played the Matron in Downfall, how do you think she feels about Vex outrunning death so much? Matt, do you think Vex was also high on the list to be the Raven Queen's champion?
    • Laura thinks the Matron would feel like since Vex's twin Vax belongs to her, it's a fair trade, and Liam agrees. Matt adds that Deathwalker's Ward could have gone to anyone, but they would have been more of a Chosen rather than a true Champion. It was Vax's deal with the Matron to bring Vex back to life that sealed him as her Champion.
  • Ashley: What do you think happened to Trist's children? Who do you hope they became?
  • Taliesin: Did you enjoy seeing Asha's Wildmother still have influence in Exandria Unlimited: Divergence? Was your take on her still Caduceus's Wildmother?
    • It was nice to see nature trying to crack its way out of a tough environment, e.g., the mice.
  • Matt: Did you and Brennan work together on the original names of the gods, in particular the name of the original god of death?
    • The original discussion for Tengar was that the gods' names would be completely unintelligible, but... captions. Their true names are beyond our comprehension. Distorting the audio for the names was an artistic choice that Matt stands by, but he understands now why the audience reaction was negative.
  • Matt: What happened to Hallis, the sick little boy that Emhira saved?
    • He's NOT Halas Lutagran! People can have similar names through history. Sam threatens to name his next character "Jamison". Hallis probably helped other survivors and common folk.
  • From chat: Sam, Braius was brought into the campaign obviously very late. Would you have wanted to make his character in another campaign because you didn't have a chance to expand on him as much as you would have?
    • Sam would have loved to do more Braius, but he got a nice arc and a decision to make at the end, and he got to woo people and do evil. He'd love to see more of him in the future, but doesn't regret not having him earlier. He was created because the campaign needed god stuff, healing, and evil. He feels like Braius had more questions answered than FCG did. Matt protests FCG's journey was cut short and there were more answers in Aeor he would have found.

Montage of clips of some of Campaign Three's biggest surprises and revelations.

  • From chat: Robbie, when did you realize Dorian had feelings for Orym?
    • To be fair, he was eyeing them all. To be honest, he thought about her when he princess-carried Laudna early on.
  • Matt: What would have happened if Imogen had given in to Predathos earlier or on Ruidus?
    • A direct communion with Predathos, with visions of its past and with additional powers for Imogen, but each use would have brought her gradually closer to having to leave the group and make a new character. Travis was encouraging her to give in to the dark side.
  • Sam: How do you feel about FCG's end? Were you hoping for a way to save them, or were you happy and wanting them to sacrifice themselves? Would FCG even want to be revived?
    • Sam's very happy with his end; it meant something and made a difference. The character is upset he didn't get the answers he wanted but wouldn't want resurrection. Matt says FCG now knows he has a soul because it's in the afterlife. The Changebringer is an awesome god.
  • Matt: What do you think would have happened if FCG had visited Aeor or had he met up with Devexian?
    • Devexian could have upgraded FCG, probably with parts from other non-repairable aeormatons. He was trying to restart the race without the weight of their history. This was expanded on a bit in The Re-Slayer's Take. Devexian would have filled in some of the past history for FCG and encouraged him to go to Aeor to learn more about the Care and Culling and his past as a sleeper, killer robot.
  • Sam: Did you play a minotaur just to break the trend of many years of small characters, or did you want to create a thirst trap for your own previous character?
    • The second one. Sam protests he doesn't always play small characters; he just starts campaigns with them.
  • Travis: Do you know what happened to Chetney's family?
  • From chat: Sam: What was the deal with Shithead?
    • Originally FCG was going to have a pet bird but Sam decided against it. Since the art was already done, he gave it to Matt and asked him to have the bird menace him at some point.

Montage of clips of Sam's drinking vessel.

  • Matt: Was Morri's deal with Orym always meant to be a fake out, or did you have plans to follow up on it but those plans got changed as the game progressed?
    • Morri knew from the start that she couldn't affect what happened on Ruidus, but if Orym wanted to offer to become her servant if things happened to go well, she wasn't going to say no.
  • Matt: Did Morri make the C-Poppers or did they exist before Chetney's deal?'
    • Morri simply adjusted people's memories of who was responsible for some fine woodworked items. Travis claims Chetney is the father of Scanlan and Orym. Sam accepts; Liam denies. Chetney was also responsible for making the interrogation chair in Campaign Two. There is much discussion of Morri's tiki bar.
  • Ashley: Does Fearne have any worries about what Teven Klask and the Lord of the Hells have in store for her future?
    • No. She may not care, but Matt's interested in a future Fearne-centric adventure.
  • Laura: How did wearing the Circlet change Imogen's perspective on the people around her? Does she keep wearing it in her downtime?
    • It changed everything. She could be around people and have friends. Laura feels that as Imogen's power grew, so did her ability to control her mindreading.
  • From chat: Robbie, what is Dorian's mother's name?
  • From Liam: Robbie, Dorian losing his brother threw his story upside-down. What was it like having to reconfigure the character?
    • Dorian compartmentalized really well. But it also meant that both he and the party had just suffered great losses. Robbie loved the final scene with his mother because it gave the character some closure.

Montage of clips of battle maps. Robbie lists some of the folks responsible: Tyler Walpole, Ian at Iron Tusk Painting, Noxweiler Berf, Jesse Jerdak, Daniel Ehrli, Payton Keo Lacebal, Ron Ogden, and Angela Basset.

  • Matt: What were the personal dynamics among Ludinus and his generals, like Otohan, Liliana, and Zathuda?
    • Originally, good. Ludinus was a prominent figure, and Otohan in particular welcomed the chance after the conclusion of the Apex War to gain more fame and lean into her inherent cruelty. However, as Ludinus's plans evolved the cracks began to show. They began to clash and dislike each other. Matt liked playing all three of them for different reasons. Otohan was terrifyingly cruel; Zathuda was manipulative and conniving; Liliana was just a tragic figure. In their first fight, Otohan wasn't interested in killing them so much as in getting Imogen to Exalt, but Matt wasn't going to let any of their fights with her be anticlimactic.
  • Taliesin: Ashton's nature is my favorite enigma of this Campaign. Dunamis explains Ashton's unique abilities, but what race was Ashton born, and how was he transformed into an earth genasi?
    • Ashton themself isn't sure what race they were, but passing through the elemental portal their father opened changed them into an earth genasi gradually, while they were in the orphanage in Bassuras, which was traumatizing.
  • Liam: Is there any other information about Will's sisters that never came up in game? For example, does Orym have a favorite triplet?
    • He has the closest connection to Leeta, who took over for Derrig as Master of Arms for Zephrah, because she, Will, and Orym all trained together.

Montage of clips of the cast's "weird habits".

  • Taliesin: What happened during Ashton's pasta adventure?
    • They stumbled into an underworld robbery and from thence into a mob summit meeting, where they picked a side, participated in a robbery, and got chased.
  • Matt: What were the range of possibilities when the Malleus Key was first activated? Was it possible for Predathos to have been released early in the campaign if the party hadn't managed to damage any of the power supplies or destroyed the key in the Fey Realm?
    • Predathos would have been released faster, since the Bloody Bridge would have penetrated much deeper into Ruidus and closer to the Hallowed Cage. At least most of the gods probably would have fled, but some might have been killed. He didn't flesh it out too much until he saw what actually happened. Matt was, however, fully ready for a pantheon missing at least some of the gods, and he would have randomly rolled to determine which ones left.
  • Everybody: Do you regret crashing your airship?
    • Answers range from a quick "no" to more uncertainty, since it didn't accomplish much. Matt assures them it had some benefit.
  • From chat: Travis: What was Bertrand Bell's fighter subclass?
    • Duelist and Champion.

Montage of clips of the various instances of How do you want to do this?

  • Matt: What happened to Yu Suffiad after they failed their mission for the Unseelie?
    • Dropping the mission as they did is unforgivable, so they're probably laying low while trying to figure out how to get the Unseelie to allow them to restore the honor of their name. Alternatively, maybe they've started a new life on Exandria. You'd have to ask Erika Ishii.
  • Matt: What was the gnarlrock shard? What was it doing to Imogen and what would have happened if she'd kept it?
    • It was very strong corrupted magic from the Fey Realm. If she'd kept it, she would have slowly started becoming more and more like Ira Wendagoth.
  • Matt: What did Ira do to the minds of the Calloways? Did they ever try to escape? What did Ira remove from their memories?
    • Ira is complicated, and he is not a good person. He basically punched holes in their memories, replacing memories of their attempts to escape with more positive ones, constructing over time a false dynamic between them.
  • Matt and Ashley: Fearne's afterlife (after Otohan killed her) looked very concerning. Why was her afterlife so different from Orym's and what would have happened to her if FCG hadn't resurrected her?
    • It surprised Ashley, too! Matt explains the dark fey strain in her bloodline creates shadow in her very essence. It was a glimpse at a pact for her spirit that was sealed without her knowledge: she was promised at birth. Fearne's spiritual essence is under a contract she is unaware of. However, she's now made so many contracts with so many entities that they're almost cancelling each other out as the various interests compete.

Montage of clips of Sam's ad reads.

  • Matt: Why did Imogen see people in her dreams after their deaths?
    • Imogen had an increasing connection with those who were Exaltant or had a recent close connection with one.
  • Matt: What was the story behind the theft of Jiana Hexum's golem?
    • That was a whole side quest that never happened, that could have led to a group of smugglers near Jrusar and let them learn more about Jiana's connection with the Cerberus Assembly.
  • Matt: What can you tell us about Eshteross' past as a mercenary? What was the nature of his relationship with Mistress Prudaj?
    • Eshteross made his name at a young age as a dependably dangerous soldier of fortune. He fought on the side of Aeshanadoor during the Apex War, clashing with Otohan Thull there. His much later death at her hands was the culmination of their blood feud. He and Ellia Prudaj had a close friendship and unresolved romance for many years.
  • Liam: Is Pretty related to Buddy the ogre? Son, nephew, cousin?
    • Obviously all ogres know each other, right? Matt's pretty sure Pretty was an on-the-fly creation.
  • Liam: Orym always had a green sash in his character design. What is the meaning behind it?
    • It was a Zephran design that he never wanted to let go of because it reminded him of home.
  • Matt: What happened to the Shade Mother?
    • She's still infesting Jrusar, just in different tunnels.
  • Laura: What kind of horse is Flora? What does she look like?
    • Laura can't remember the name, but describes a palomino.
  • Everyone: What area of Marquet was your favorite to explore? Is there any location you wish you could return to in the future?
    • Bassuras is popular, as is Jrusar. Laura wishes the group had named themselves "The Silver Reach" because every time they went anywhere in the city, they had to pay a silver for the gondola rides.
  • Chetney: Roll for death.
    • Three rolls; no death.

Montage of cast interviews and favorite moments.

Part II[]

Recorded video happy birthday wishes from Abubakar Salim, Erica Lindbeck, Luis Carazo, Nick Marini, Anjali Bhimani, and Noshir Dalal.

Brennan Lee Mulligan is introduced and joins the cast.

  • Brennan: What's it like to play around in Matt's map building room?
    • It's beautifully tended to, and intuitively organized. Brennan wonders if the Humanoids 2 are jealous of the Humanoids 1. He intended to make the Torm's Hill map simple, but got drawn into constructing a whole little town.
  • Brennan: In EXU Divergence, when did you get the idea to have some of the party members be gods, specifically for Matt to be the All-Hammer?
    • Right away! He did it through trickery, knowing Matt loves dwarves. To him, the story was about humans reconstructing their own world, and gods that want to help have to become mortal.
  • From Robbie: Brennan, when you're crafting a story, is it first plot-driven? Or are you looking for a thematic idea first?
    • They can't co-exist without each other. Plot, character, and theme all contribute. Exandria Unlimited: Calamity started from knowing the war was started by Vespin Chloras, so the challenge was making all six players responsible for what he did and share his sin of hubris, compounding his error into a cascade of disaster. In Downfall, he asked himself what situation would create the most pain and decided it was seeing it from the viewpoint of the Prime Deities, forced to destroy a city. For Divergence, it was time for the little guys to show the end of the Calamity was participated in by every person then living.
  • Brennan: How much of the trilogy of EXU Calamity, Downfall, Divergence was planned beforehand, and did you know you would continue and connect into the next miniseries?
    • "Over the past several years, I've been falling down the hill of my own life at top speed." In other words, none of it was pre-planned, and each miniseries was approached independently. Matt and Marisha sort of had in mind the Calamity as the subject matter for the first story. Matt pitched multiple ideas to Brennan, but Brennan heard the excitement in his voice about the Calamity, so did a little research and thought it would make a great disaster movie.
  • From Chat: What happened to Patia's Orb?
    • When Matt saw the Orb sent away safely at the end of Calamity, he immediately thought it would be a cool jumping-off point for the Cobalt Soul. It was really fantastic that Brennan could work it into Divergence. Matt believes that as of 843 PD, the orb exists sealed in the deepest, most carefully guarded vault in a monastery of the Cobalt Soul. Liam adds that it's accompanied by a statue of a swole dragonborn.
  • Liam: How exactly did Brennan go about recruiting you for his sneaky Divergence plans?
    • Liam came into the Session Zero with several character ideas, but his favorite was a lone gold dragonborn wanderer. When Brennan heard this, he told him they'd talk later, so it all fell into place without much conspiring. The Platinum Dragon and the All-Hammer weren't gods we'd seen a lot of, and their domains felt very heroic. Matt just wanted to make an old dwarf, and Brennan tells him he made the oldest.
  • From Liam: Matt, how did Garen start? Was he your only idea or one of several?
    • It's hard to remember, but Matt's pretty sure he just wanted to play a dwarf since he feels they're underrepresented in Critical Role, and loved the idea of playing a character at the end of their life having an opportunity to make a difference. He planned that Garen would fade into stone and dust after leaving something meaningful behind.
  • Matt and Brennan: In the C3 finale, the Divine Gate is destroyed by all gods together. Was the All-Hammer wrong about gods not being able to destroy it, or was it that he meant that one god cannot destroy it, but all of them together can? Or was it destroyed in some other, not-exactly-godly way?
    • It could only be brought down with complete agreement of all the Prime Deities.
  • Brennan: What would have happened if the kid crossed the threshold and was taken by the Lord of the Hells? We know Asmodeus ends up beyond the Divine Gate, so if his plan worked, how would you have dealt with that?
    • That's the PCs problem, not Brennan's. Matt envisions an arc where Asmodeus is loose and the job is to corral him behind the Gate, à la Vecna.
  • Brennan: How did you decide what Vestiges to hand your players? Were there any Vestiges in Divergence that we didn't see?
    • The Infiltrator's Key was kind of souped-up and modified with a soul ruby in the middle. When Brennan read the description, it sure sounded like something the Lord of the Hells would create.
  • Brennan: What happened to Gubbling? Did he make it to Torm's Hill and join the Roach Gang?
    • Yes, but when they explained what they did, he decided that sounded frightening and went off to become a farmer.
  • Matt and Liam: Did experiencing ExU: Divergence make you really think differently about certain characters who lived through it, like Ludinus? Or did it solidify in your mind the reason why those characters are so hardened by the life they have endured?
    • Everyone reacts to events in their lives differently. In Matt's mind, Ludinus lost a lot as a young man coming into the worst days of the Calamity, raised in a loving environment and watching everyone he cared about torn from him in horrible ways, without reason. Matt empathizes with what he's been through, but despises what he let it turn him into. Erro's mortal life was the antithesis of Ludinus. He experienced great losses over and over and lost faith in life. When he remembered his godhood, he recognized that what the gods had done to mortals was not right or just. Brennan saw some irony in the fact that Rei'nia Saph had such faith in the gods saving them, when she was traveling with two of them who were very, very tired.
  • From Chat: Is The Nordverse part of Exandria?
    • Sam: Yes. Matt: No. Maybe somewhere in the Greater Cosmos.
  • From Chat: When the Matron did the Rites of Catatheosis, why did she know about the beacon, and did she understand the nature of the Luxon?
    • Matt: No, it's a mystery about which they have suspicions. The Matron, however, is very familiar with dunamis and the beacons because they break the cycle of death. She found using it in the ritual very conflicting, but felt the ends justified the means.
  • Matt: What will become of beings like Galdric and Uk'otoa with the gods now mortal? Could they rise to greater prominence?
    • "When the cats are away, baby." There's now a power vacuum, and this new age is likely to be tumultuous.
  • From Laura: Matt, have you thought about singing "It's Hard to be the Bard"?
    • Thanks, Laura. He'll now have to sing it at some point.
  • Laura: You said in the past that Imogen could have gone evil. What events in particular do you think would push her to that point?
    • Other than exploring Predathos' body? If Laudna had died or given herself over to Delilah.
  • From Brennan: I've gotten to play with everyone here once. Which of your characters would have been the worst fit for your prequel?
    • Beau would have been horrible. She would have wanted to bring the whole city down herself. Grog would not have been a good Eye of Avalir. Jester would also have been horrible, with way too much power as a goddess, and wanting to bring Asmodeus to the Good Side. Taliesin thinks the Jester/Ashton combo would have been great. Liam thinks Bren Aldric Ermendrud would have died of dysentery at age seven, but Vax would have helped Fiedra start the Roach Gang. Sam thinks Taryon Darrington as a broadcaster in Avalir would give in to the seductions of fame. For Ashley, it's Fearne. For Matt, Artagan who would be taking all sides.
  • From Liam: Brennan, what is it about the Lord of Hells that you love so much?
    • He was told if he ran a miniseries for Critical Role he could take his Betrayer home. Brennan contrasts the evil embodied by the Chained Oblivion as a totally alien entity who doesn't even register sentience as we know it, with the intimacy of the humanity of Asmodeus. Trickery is deeply human. "The Lord of the Hells hates you because he knows you, and he needs you to know that you deserve it." Being punished by something evil because you're evil is frightening because it's personal. Marisha is thankful Brennan chooses to use his powers for good.
  • From Liam: Matt, in Campaign Two there was moon stuff. When were you cooking Ludinus for the top of the pyramid in Campaign Three?
    • Matt wanted to get to Ruidus lore by the end of Campaign One, and that a third campaign would be centered around it. In C2, he had the idea of Predathos in mind and began to drop hints. Ludinus's backstory wasn't immediately tethered to the moon, but as C2 progressed he realized he was the perfect NPC for what needed to be set up for C3.
  • Travis: You love werewolves and must have always wanted to play one, so why did you give yourself a mechanic you couldn't control (i.e. die in your sleep) that could take your werewolf PC away from you at any time?
    • Chetney was just supposed to be fun and then die. But he wouldn't die in the fights, so Travis decided to make a mechanic for it. Matt wouldn't let him have increasingly negative odds, and Travis regrets it because Chetney's still alive. Travis thinks it would be amazing for the PCs to find a dead Chetney lying next to them when they wake up. He got close a lot, but never rolled 000.
  • Travis: Is Chetney Orym and/or Scanlan's father?
    • There are franchises all over Exandria.
  • Travis: Were there any toys you made that you didn't get to distribute?'
    • Yes.
  • Ashley: Is there anything you wish Fearne would have stolen?
    • The Beacon. Because it's pretty.
  • From Robbie: Would Fearne ever consider playing with the fate threads of her friends?'
    • Absolutely. Just little stuff, not anything crazy.
  • From Marisha: Speaking of the beacons, where were they during the Calamity and Age of Arcanum?
    • One was discovered towards the end of the Calamity by the Bright Queen, and there was one that was in Aeor being studied and utilized to power some of their technology. The Luxon is early, early Exandrian lore.

In conclusion, shout-outs to all the guest players during this campaign. Yes, there will be more Exandrian content, and Sam Riegel will be DMing the next Exandrian miniseries. There are a lot of loose threads they hope to touch on later. Matt thanks everyone for the last ten years. Liam shares that he was very nervous before the last scene of Divergence because of everything Matt's done for them all for the last ten years, and he wanted to thank him properly. Brennan tells Matt he's safe around him.
