The Wolf-King is one of the most dreaded monsters within the Savalirwood.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Wolf-King looked like a pack of five direwolves of exaggerated and unnatural features, and limbs that moved as if they were dislocated. Their respective necks were stretched, and their torsos were strangely elongated, like snakes, extending about 30 feet until all five connected to a single large, muscular main body with large legs. The five direwolf-shaped extensions pull the main body like horses in a carriage.[1]

History[]

During the apogee solstice of 843 PD the Wolf-King inhabited the ruins of Molaesmyr, but was known to wander outside of that territory, making other animals wary of the monstrous predator; a fish warned Fearne Calloway about the Wolf-King when she asked about potential dangers in the Cursed Forest.[2]

When Fearne and her friends reached the ruins of the fallen elven city they were surveying the area while searching for the Gildhollow Tower, having a run-in with ghosts and hiding from a winged monster. The Wolf-King, interested in the activity, began a hunt trying to take down the adventurers, but stealth, magic and distractions gave them enough time to reach the tower they were looking for.

The monster stayed in the area for a few minutes, circling the building and attacking Deanna's Guardian of Faith, achieving nothing more than injuring itself with radiant energy, after which it withdrew, looking for easier prey, while Chetney Pock O'Pea claimed that they would dethrone it in the future.[3]

Upon escaping from the tower, F.R.I.D.A. fell, and the sound alerted the Wolf-King again. It began to give chase as the party fled through the city and out into the Savalirwood. After about an hour of running, the Wolf-King lost track, after which it may have returned to Molaesmyr.[4]

Abilities[]

Since the monster has five extensions of its body with its own jaws, it can attack multiple times through them.

Its main body does not seem made for climbing.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Matthew Mercer explained that the Wolf-King was based on the rat king, a phenomenon by which several rats end up with their tails intertwined or with their bodies stuck to each other. This usually leads to the death of these animals, since they are unable to move or eat normally, unless they are found in time, in which case human intervention can separate them and save their lives.
  • It is unknown if the Wolf-King was a mutation caused by the corruption of the forest or if it exists independently of it.
