Lady Winifred Cosgrove is a dame of Timmony and the current Baroness of Sloak. As an NPC, she is played by Brennan Lee Mulligan.

Description[]

She is a beautiful and broad-shouldered woman with long hair.[8] She owns armor from her time in the army, but it is very old.[9]

She is a kind and responsible woman who loves her hometown.[10]

Biography[]

Background[]

Winifred was born in Sloak as the daughter of a knight of Timmony, the last living member of the Order of the Howling Rain, a position she would inherit in time (taking the position of last member after her father's death).[11]

She fought in the Falconer's Rebellion as a teenager, and when she was 17 the Torn Banner saved her life.[12] Eventually she returned to Sloak, and became a guard in service of the local nobles; thus, she served the Baroness of Sloak and stayed in service of her widower, Doset Tachonis, and the latter's designated successor, Casimir Gavendale.[13]

"Fanged Revenge" (4x08) and "To the Hounds!" (4x09)[]

Dame Cosgrove was keeping watch with Gully Breeches outside the castle while the new baron was meeting with Wicander Halovar and his doctor, but when fog began to spread and a wolf frightened some of the animals (including the mule carrying the food), the guards followed them. By the time Winifred returned, the castle had been captured, and she was informed that Casimir had been killed (along with most of his Crow Keepers), but the other knights and guards had been spared by Wicander and his allies. She expressed her concern about the titles of Sloak reverted to the Earl of Gormalay, and that caused the Soldiers to claim the barony under the protection of Wicander and House Halovar.

After that, and with some coin granting the guards' service for the time being, the new lord, his friends, and the garrison of the castle prepared to eat and rest, while Winifred told them about Sloak and its public house, and about some improvements that Jasper (a dwarven mason) and his team were implementing in their small town; she showed some interest in the possibility of Dame Morgaine visiting Sloak, and when asked, shared some information about herself and her connection to her hometown. Shortly after, she was surprised and moved by Baron Halovar's decision: to designate her as the new Baroness of Sloak, to protect and improve the situation of her home (and modifying Casimir's deed of title to make it official); the other guards and knights immediately kneeled, showing respect to their new lady. When she noticed the new banner Thimble had been working on (which showed a falcon) she recognized the pixie as a famous figure of the Falconer's Rebellion, and told them about her own history with the Torn Banner; she declared her intention of making good use of the opportunity she had been given, giving Sloak new hopes. When they visited Brauwla's public house together, Dame Morgaine was waiting for them, and she was told about the new ruler of the barony. Dame Cosgrove, now Baroness Cosgrove, kneeled to show respect to the hound of the king, but the latter put her paws on her shoulders and declared her her sister and equal, after which she licked her face. She also advised her not to visit the Earl in Tybry's Lea; instead, she should wait in Sloak so that when King Augustus Valian returned to Timmony he could visit the town himself to make Winifred's new title official, and in fair circumstances.[14]

After Dame Morgaine finished her investigation in town, she, Sir Hawkins and the Soldiers left Sloak, leaving Baroness Cosgrove with the provisional approval of the Hounds of the King to rule the barony, and promising that the order would contact the king for her.[15] Baroness Winifred thanked them again for all their help and provided them with horses, assuring them that thanks to their generosity Sloak could afford to replace the beasts.[16]

Quotations[]

  • (to the Soldiers) "We have been driven so deep underground. "But we cannot be extinguished, we cannot be removed or destroyed. I know there's very little that gives hope in my hometown, but I am here now, and I have been visited by you. So perhaps if the strange and magical wonders you bear would come to a place like Sloak, then yes, anything is possible. Thank you."[17]

Trivia[]

  • Her name comes from the combination of two terms in Old English: wynn (joy) and friþ (peace).[18]
  • A "Sir Cosgrove" is mentioned at different points as one of the guards in Castle Sloak.[19] Assuming he wasn't being confused with another knight, he might be a relative of Winifred.
