Will was a half-elven member of the Air Ashari, the son of Derrig and the late husband of Orym.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Will was a half-elven man of athletic build, with dark brown hair and tanned skin. Of Derrig and Nel's four children, Will was the one who most resembled his father.
Biography[]
Background[]
Will was born as the youngest child of Derrig and Nel, two members of the Air Ashari.[3] He grew up in Zephrah with his three older sisters, Baernie, Leeta and Maeve, and at some point of his childhood he met Orym, a halfling boy of similar age. They grew closer, trained together, and eventually both of them joined the Tempest Blades as guards of the Voice of the Tempest. They fell in love and started a relationship that later became a marriage after Will proposed.[4] They remained close to Will's family, with Orym seeing Derrig as a father figure,[5] and learning some basic magical healing from his mother-in-law and sister-in-law.[6]
Circa 837 PD,[7] Will was killed during an attack on Zephrah[8] by mysterious assassins wrapped in dark leathers and ragged cloth, their nondescript faces covered to the point where their eyes could barely be seen. When they died, they left no trace, but melted away.[9] His father Derrig was also killed in the same attack.[10] Both were unable to be resurrected due to a toxin used on the blades of the assassins specifically designed to thwart any attempt at revivification.[11]
Derrig and Will were buried next to each other on one of the memorial platforms of Zephrah, and the tomb of the latter was marked with his old sword.[12]
Years later, in 843 PD, Orym was sent by Keyleth to investigate a similar attack in Marquet, and learned that the assassins were in fact echoes summoned by Otohan Thull.[13] When Orym was killed by Otohan in an encounter in Bassuras, he found himself in a place of peace, the cherry blossoms and sweet breezes of Zephrah. He turned to see Will greeting him as a shaft of light came down toward him from above. Will told him he wasn't done, and Orym choked out, "I really wish I could stay." They embraced, and telling him to go, Will threw him up toward the shaft of light.[14]
A few weeks after Orym's revival, after he and his friends helped Chetney Pock O'Pea during his trial in Zha'Vrollo, the temple of Sahyaadon, Orym noticed Will's natural scent in the chamber, where only he, Fearne Calloway and a statue of the Wildmother remained. After inspecting the statue Orym put his sword (which had been gifted to him by Will) inside the scabbard the goddess was holding, and the weapon became magical.[15] Orym later named it "Seedling, the Wayward Pilgrim."[16]
After the apogee solstice, Orym and his friends went to Zephrah and Orym visited his husband's tomb, talking to him and to Derrig.[17] Many days later, during his visit to the Abundant Terrace in Vasselheim, Orym communed with the Wildmother, and she allowed him to meet Will in her divine forest. Will appeared with golden eyes and a body made of plants (just like Orym during the vision), and although he greeted him warmly and told him they would be together again, he also asked him to be happy in life.[18]
Relationships[]
Orym[]
Orym was Will's husband. Orym's moon tattoos are in remembrance of Will, as the two moons represent the pair of them: "big moon, little moon".[1] They were a passionate couple that "defiled" all the hills in Zephrah.[19] Orym misses him a lot, and dreams of him often.

Trivia[]
- His name is a diminitive of the English name William, which comes from the German Wilhelm, form by the Proto-Germanic words wiljô ("will", "wish" or "desire") and helmaz (helm/helmet).
- When asked if Will was named "after TV's Wilfred Ale?" Liam agreed.[22]
- Will is the connection between two of Liam O'Brien's characters: Derrig (Will's father) and Orym (Will's husband).
- Both his father and his husband have sleeve tattoos representing elements of the sky,[23] but it is unknown if Will had one as well.
- Orym's official playlist referenced Will before the reveal in "Heart-to-Heartmoor" (3x17). "My Lover" by Birtalker was captioned "Not a day goes by...". "Les Coeurs Jumeaux" (The Twin Hearts) by Concrete Blonde features lyrics about missing a loved one and wishing to see them again. The song was simply captioned "Ink", linking the song's sun and moon themes to Orym's tattoo of the two moons of Exandria.
- Will was a skilled warrior, since he became part of the Tempest Blades.
- Apparently, and according to Dani Carr, the original name of the character was supposed to be "Riegel" (for Sam Riegel) instead of Will.[24]
