The Weave Lens is a unique magical item created by Morrigan the Fatestitcher at the request of Ira Wendagoth.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Weave Lens looks like a small deep emerald green glass disc of glass (possibly residuum)[3], rough on the edges with a smooth curvature like a lens. When in the light, it has a slight iridescent rainbow quality.[4] It is about an inch in diameter. [5] There are faint grooves along its edges that look as if they carry an enchantment.[6]
Properties[]
When the Lens is looked through, magical items glow. When the item is focused on, it reveals its individual magical pattern[7] in the form of both language and runes.[8] Laudna's Eyes of the Runekeeper ability to read any form of writing including the linguistic meaning of a rune[9] allowed her to see not only that a sword was enchanted, but also the general nature of the enchantment.[10]
Oleander Calloway said that they had requested Morri Calloway create an item that would "reveal the true nature of enchantment and weave of magic".[11]
Activation of the lens lasts only "a short time",[12] probably one to ten minutes.
History[]
While aiding Oleander and Birdie Calloway build the device that they believed would give them more information about the nature of Ruidus either during or prior to the imminent apogee solstice, Ira Wendagoth (the Nightmare King) reached out to Morri Calloway to create a piece he needed to complete his device.[13] Morri did so and entrusted the Lens to Fearne, telling her to give it to her parents when she found them.[14][15] Fearne gave the Lens to Oleander and it was inserted into Ira Wendagoth's Veilscatter Scope,[16] allowing a view of the arcane cage surrounding the red moon Ruidus and a city located beneath its swirling red clouds.[17]
After Ira stole the Moontide Crown from the Scope and escaped, Orym recovered the Weave Lens. Ashton immediately took it and hit it with his hammer, shattering it. Laudna cast Mending on it but they were unsure if its enchantment remained.[18] The party tested it a few times afterward and the results were not encouraging.[19]
Trivia[]
- The Weave - In Dungeons & Dragons lore, "all existence is suffused with magical power, and potential energy lies untapped in every rock, stream, and living creature, and even in the air itself." When mortals tap into this raw magic, they are actually shaping the interface between their own will and the stuff of raw magic, accessing it either directly, as in the case of arcane casters, or through the mediation of the gods, the power of nature, or the strength of their oath.[20] In the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, this fabric of magic suffusing the universe was called "The Weave".[21]
- Birdie Calloway made a necklace for her daughter using a fragment of the lens.[22]
