Master Vrill the Moth is an elf sorcerer and one of five co-leaders of the Consortium of the Vermilion Dream.

Description[]

Appearance[]

When Aradrine is first encountered in 836 PD, she is a white-haired elf wearing a floppy red hat to shield her from the sun, and she has piercing eyes.[1]

Personality[]

Occult silvertongues like Vrill are charismatic leaders. However, exposing themselves to alien mysteries can make them mistrustful and anxious, and lead to hallucinations and imagined conspiracies to usurp them.[4]

Though she has an air of contemptuous superiority, her discerning curiosity is piqued if she is told about visions of Alyxian, whose history the Consortium has been researching.[5]

Biography[]

Background[]

Vrill came from the Menagerie Coast,[1] and as of 836 PD, Vrill is one of five masters on the council that founded and still lead the Consortium of the Vermilion Dream. The masters were all renowned and influential occult mystics who were primarily fascinated by the Moon of Ill Omen, Ruidus. They each hoped to gain wealth and prestige from their studies, and they gathered like-minded people from across Exandria whose magical talents could help bring in income to support the Consortium's expensive research.[6]

Call of the Netherdeep[]

If the player characters (PCs) join the Consortium, Aloysia Telfan leads them to the First Eclipse, a well-appointed tavern in Ank'Harel's Suncut Bazaar and the temporary headquarters of the Consortium. Aloysia opens a secret door to a storeroom, tells the PCs to wait there, and after several minutes returns with Vrill. Aloysia has told Vrill about events in Bazzoxan involving the Jewel of Three Prayers, so although Vrill looks down on the PCs, she is willing to take a short time to see them. She immediately asks to see the Jewel, examines it, confirms that it is a Vestige in its Awakened State, and returns it. She then asks the PCs how they came to have it, and if they mention having a vision of Alyxian, she becomes frankly interested and mentions how the Consortium has turned up some of his history. Regardless, she gives the PCs a map of the city, tells them they can stay at the First Eclipse until they can arrange their own place to stay, and says the Consortium will be in touch, then excuses herself with Aloysia in tow.[7]

Character information[]

Abilities[]

Vrill had the abilities of an occult silvertongue, which are as follows:[2]

  • Saving throw proficiencies: Wisdom, Charisma
  • Skill proficiencies: Arcana (expertise), Deception (expertise), History, Perception
  • Damage resistance: Psychic
  • Senses: Truesight 60 ft.
  • Magic Resistance: Advantage on saving throws against spells and magic effects
  • Alien Mind: If a creature deals psychic damage to her or tries to read her thoughts, that creature must succeed on a Intelligence saving throw or be stunned until the start of its next turn.
  • Actions:
    • Crimson Bolt: Melee or ranged (60 ft.) spell attack, deals psychic damage
    • Spellcasting (requiring no material components, using Charisma):
      • 2/day each: Charm Person, Mage Armor, Sending
      • 1/day: Dimension Door
  • Elemental Servitor: Once per day as a bonus action, can magically summon an earth elemental in a space she can see within 60 feet for one minute or until she dies; the elemental takes its turn immediately after hers and obeys her commands.

As an elf, Vrill would also be immune from magic that would put her to sleep, and she would enter a semi-conscious trance for four hours a night instead of sleeping.[8] Depending on what subrace of elf she is, she would have additional traits or abilities; she shows several characteristic traits of a pallid elf,[9] which would give her the following traits:

  • Incisive Sense: Advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) and Wisdom (Insight) checks.
  • Blessing of the Moon Weaver: Knows the Light cantrip, and given her level of spellcasting as an occult silvertongue, she would also be able to cast Sleep and (on herself) Invisibility once per long rest, both without the use of material components.
  • She would also have a bonus to her Wisdom ability score,[10] which (if not already taken into account in the occult silvertongue statblock) would raise her Wisdom modifier to +4.

Appearances and mentions[]

Quotations[]

  • "The Consortium will be in touch again after you find your own lodgings. No need to tell us where you're staying. We will find you."[11]

Trivia[]

  • Several of the details about Vrill's appearance and personality line up with those of a typical pallid elf. She hails from the Menagerie Coast, where some pallid elves are known to have ventured after leaving the nearby Pallid Grove. Pallid elves are moon-worshipers, which accords with Vrill's special interest in the Moon of Ill Omen. The way her eyes seem to penetrate everything around her particularly evokes the pallid elves' Incisive Sense trait,[12] and her world-wandering curiosity is typical of pallid elves. Her white hair and attempts to shield herself from the sun are also consistent with pallid elves, a subrace that became pale during several centuries underground,[13] though white hair and sunlight sensitivity are both characteristic of drow as well.[14] (Most elves on the Menagerie Coast are descended from the darker-skinned desert elves of Marquet.[15][16])
