Plot summary[]
Percy, Vex'ahlia, and Keyleth plunge downward, landing in water that breaks their fall. They call up to Scanlan, Grog, and Trinket above them to throw down a rope, but the only one they have isn't quite long enough. Scanlan starts down it so Keyleth can cast Grasping Vine to connect to it, but is attacked by a mechanical device part way, and Grog pushes Trinket in before leaping down himself so they won't be left behind. Suddenly, the water begins forcefully draining out from the bottom, sucking them into a whirlpool.
Meanwhile, inside the headquarters of The Clasp, Pike and Vax'ildan are escorted under guard to a crowded arena. A portcullis lifts and a horrifying chimera (named "William") emerges.
The rest of Vox Machina now find themselves swimming in an underground, cavernous lake filled with faintly magical crystals. They make their way to a small island, but notice a large swimming creature circling, which Grog is eager to fight.
Pike and Vax, meanwhile, battle the chimera. Although Vax's daggers have been taken, Pike still has her magic, and they evade it until she is able to free it from its chain with her Spiritual Weapon and then send it flying into the watching crowd. In the ensuing confusion, they flee through the Clasp's headquarters and make their way to the surface of the city of Emon through the deserted Diamond Nest Tavern.
The rest of the party manages to avoid the circling creature and find what appears to be an exit tunnel. When the creature pursues them, Scanlan uses Lightning Bolt to collapse the tunnel behind them, crushing it. They find themself in a cavern filled with beautiful glowing crystals, and spot a small, cozy cottage. Scanlan knocks and they're invited in, greeted warmly by a strange-looking elderly woman. When they ask her for the way out, she confirms she knows of one, but such knowledge is never free. The price is for them to slay a creature which has recently nested in the ruins of a temple. This thrills Grog, and with little choice, the party sets off into the underground ruins.
