Publisher's summary[2]

Plot summary[]

Vox Machina, except for Pike and Vax'ildan, have broken into Sir Gregory Fince's house in Emon, but there is no answer to their calls. They see half-eaten food, as if he was called away suddenly. A search of the house reveals nothing, leaving only the basement to investigate. As they creep down the stairs, they hear a cry of pain and then see a chained, dangling figure being tortured by two fiends.

Meanwhile, Vax and an invisible Pike are creeping stealthily through the Grotto, the sprawling lair of the Clasp. Vax leaps gracefully off a balcony, but when Pike tries to follow she breaks it noisily and falls onto the floor below, where several seedy-looking characters hear the sound and investigate. When they start taking swings at what they assume (correctly) is an invisible intruder, Pike can no longer restrain herself and attacks back. Vax leaps to her aid and they successfully battle their opponents, but almost immediately are surrounded by hundreds more.

The rest of the party see that the manacled figure the devils are torturing has gone still, and they attack, killing both fiends. Keyleth discovers that they are too late to save Fince but they find his notes, indicating that General Krieg is in charge of the investigation of the Winter's Crest assassination attempt, and that since Fince was the one who stopped it, he feared for his own safety. Similarly, Sovereign Uriel was keeping his family isolated in the palace, particularly from the members of the Tal'Dorei Council.

Vax and Pike are being held in a dungeon, and are escorted under restraint to the leader of this chapter of the Clasp, Spireling Modeth. Vax tell him (truthfully) he is a fellow Clasp member from Westruun, here to investigate the murder attempt against Uriel, and to learn who sent the Dragon Stone to Westruun. While they are speaking Pike surreptitiously casts Zone of Truth. Modeth reveals the Clasp indeed facilitated that delivery, paid for by an ambitious Council member, before realizing Pike cast a spell on him. Unfortunately, now that they know too much, they cannot be allowed to live. They'll let William take care of it; he hasn't been fed yet.

Meanwhile in Fince's basement workshop, Percy muses that Fince's investigation must have been getting too close to someone and they should find out who was the last person he spoke with about it. As he paces, he steps on a hidden release, opening a trap door that sends him, Keyleth, and Vex'ahlia plummeting.

Quotations[]

  • Spireling Modeth: Who are you working with?
Vax: The healer here, my twin sister, her pet bear, a rich ponce with far too many names, a disturbingly horny gnome, an incredibly beautiful sweet druid, and what I'm convinced is a semi-sentient keg of ale with an axe.
