Verna the Viper is a lagomore specialist in esoteric explosives. As an NPC, she is played by Matthew Mercer.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Verna is a lagomore woman with mousy brown fur across her face, amber eyes, brown hair, and long floppy ears that are jagged at the edges. One of her pointed front teeth is chipped. When she met Bells Hells, she was dressed in a cloak and a robe.[1]
Biography[]
Verna was born in the Fey Realm, but eventually she traveled to Exandria, joining the Overmind sect of tinkerers of Bassuras, becoming one of their masterminds as an specialist in esoteric explosives. At some point she befriended Imahara Joe and met Birdie Calloway;[2] when Bells Hells asked the former if he could get them a bomb, he immediately mentioned Verna as one of the people to ask.[3]
After the apogee solstice of 843 PD, Paragon's Call started organizing their forces in Bassuras and attacking foreign forces such as skyships from Vasselheim. General Ratanish forced Imahara Joe and Verna to work for him creating whatever the mercenaries needed; they were working on a brumestone nullifier when Bells Hells arrived and attacked the members of Paragon's Call. During the battle the desert druid warden working for Ratanish transformed into a giant eagle and tried to fly away with the two tinkerers, but was stopped by the adventurers.[4]
After being saved, Verna stayed with Joe and his friends, declaring she was a fugitive now, and accepted their request to work on the repair of Ludinus Da'leth's arcane harness along with Joe and Dancer.[5] When Fearne Calloway asked the Viper about her past she confirmed that, like the faun, she hadn't been raised in the Material Plane, and quickly identified her as a Calloway, since she knew her mother.[6] When she met Keyleth she praised her appearance, and declared her intention of speaking with her later, since the archdruid had agreed to bring Imahara Joe, Dancer and Verna to Whitestone so they could work on their new project under better conditions.[7]
When Bells Hells returned to Whitestone, they discovered that their tinkerers (with the additional assistance of Allura Vysoren) had fixed the harness. Verna witnessed the tests that confirmed the Quintessence Array worked, as well as the following conversations involving the spark of Rau'shan, with great interest.[8] Since they couldn't return to Bassuras, the lagomore and the rest of her team stayed in Whitestone as refugees.
