Vence Nuthaleus is a former Annex to Martinet Ludinus Da'leth of the Cerberus Assembly.[6] In Unndilar of 836, he was handed over to the Kryn Dynasty by the Dwendalian Empire as a war criminal. As an NPC, Vence Nuthaleus was played by Matthew Mercer.

Vence Nuthaleus is a human male in his late twenties with softly curling golden blond hair combed back to the shoulder behind his ears. He is clean shaven and speaks with a Zemnian accent. His apparently regular dress is a long blue set of fine wool robes.[7]

Background[]

Under the direction of Obann, Vence traveled to Xhorhas and set up an Abyssal Anchor in The Braan, the home of a group of stone giants, allowing demons to pour in. This displaced the giants and caused disruption to the Xhorhasian war machine construction facility nearby.

In the process, he accidentally left a small piece of his clothing inside one of the coils of the Abyssal Anchor, a dark blue wool swatch[8] which was enough for Jester to Scry upon.[9] She saw a luxurious chamber with fine furniture and a blond individual with a stoic expression speaking into a sending stone. Vence told the person to whom he was speaking that "she is paranoid, but I know her blind spots" and that he has "the emblem". They set up a meeting at the Overcrow Apothecary in thirteen days and bid farewell by saying "Angel's eye, friend". He then began to study a book titled The King That Crawls.[10] At that point, the Mighty Nein referred to Vence as "Blondie".

On the night before the Overcrow meeting, Jester Scryed on Vence again. He was in a large luxurious chamber, apparently taking notes on a meeting taking place at the other end of the room. The meeting appeared to be between high-level Empire figures discussing war strategy, including one person referred to as "My Liege"[11] by the others. Jester was ejected from the Scry when the figures approached Vence.[12]

The next day, immediately after the Overcrow encounter, Jester Scryed on Vence once again. She saw the same room from her first Scrying ritual and Vence within, still reading The King That Crawls and making notes in Celestial.[13]

Later, Dairon recognized Jester disguised as "Blondie" to actually be Vence Nuthaleus, the Annex to Ludinus Da'leth of the Cerberus Assembly.[14] Two months later, on the recommendation of Yussa Errenis, the Mighty Nein met with Oremid Hass, expressed their concern that Vence was a member of the Angel of Irons cult and its possible connection to the Chained Oblivion, and presented the evidence. Oremid was slightly surprised to see Vence in this light, previously only thinking of him as "the lap dog", but promised to begin investigating.[15]

Jester's Scrying saw Vence in the Chantry of the Dawn in Rexxentrum handing Cardinal Respa an Abyssal Anchor and two scrolls taken from the vaults of Vasselheim, which could reveal the fane below and the path to it. In preparation for their ritual, Vence also organized diversions in Rexxentrum "coming off the Harvest's Rise Festival". According "their link in Xhorhas" they should begin now. Toward the end of their dialogue, Respa noticed the Scrying orb and flew into a rage at Vence for allowing himself to unwittingly reveal their plans to outsiders. The Scry ended abruptly.[16]

Following Obann's defeat in the Chantry of the Dawn, the Mighty Nein attended a meeting with high-ranking members of the Empire, Assembly, and the King himself. The group shared their discovery that Abyssal Anchors were being placed in both the Empire and the Kryn Dynasty, which Ludinus Da'leth confirmed, and that Vence was significantly involved in these diversions. Ludinus immediately tried to use Sending to contact him, but apparently without success. Concerned, Ludinus immediately ordered his escape from the city to be blocked and to start an all-points search, saying that he had just given Vence a means of protection from divination.[17]

Six days later, Jester received a Sending from Ludinus Da'leth, telling her that Vence had been captured by the Empire.[18] Vence was later exchanged for Adeen Tasithar during the peace negotiations which ended the War of Ash and Light.[19]
