The Veilscatter Scope was a viewing device built by Ira Wendagoth and Oleander Calloway in their hideout in the Hellcatch Valley.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Veilscatter Scope is "a climbing, massive, 30-foot tall, telescope-like construct of metal, stone, and all manner of strange cables and runes and dozens of crystalline spheres of varying sizes mounted in numerous places along its impressive size, each casting a dull blue light in its vicinity throughout the otherwise rather shaded chamber."[1] A mask-like device covers the face of a user.[2] It is hinged along its length and bends at odd angles as it extends through a hole in the ceiling of the stone-hewn chamber in which it was built.[3]

There are small markings on the rock surrounding the area where the telescope emerges, consisting of little arrows and notches indicating certain directions and locations, with little scrawled-in notes almost as if observations had been noted on the surrounding stone.[4] They indicate dates over at least "a couple years" measuring the six-month pattern of the arc of Ruidus over the Hellcatch Valley, showing it nearing its apex at the coming Apogee Solstice. There was also one note in Sylvan reading: "Curiosity".[5]

Properties[]

Ira Wendagoth, the creator of the Scope, described it as a "unique cross section" of his previous work in espionage that enabled a view of places previously only visible through Scrying and was able to pierce the most powerful defensive magics.[6]

The Moontide Crown was utilized by Ira Wendagoth in the construction of the Veilscatter Scope,[7] which even before installation of the Weave Lens, allowed it to visualize the leylines over Marquet.[8] Once the Lens was installed, while viewing the red moon Ruidus Imogen saw around it a cage of lattice-like energy.[9] Orym and she were able to see its stormy surface and caught a glimpse of a city there.[10] Subsequently, Ira also looked through the scope to see the city, then shifted the scope's focus elsewhere to a location to the northeast, saying he wanted to "watch their faces as they fail." When questioned, he admitted he helped build the machine in the Feywild along with the Unseelie Court and their allies Otohan Thull and Ludinus Da'leth. Ira pulled the Crown from the scope and placed it on his head, bowed, and disappeared in a flash of purple energy.[11]

When Bells Hells encountered Tuldus, a member of the Ruby Vanguard group led by Ludinus Da'leth with the stated goal of releasing Predathos from its prison within Ruidus, Imogen recognized his mental images of the Malleus Keys as being similar to the Veilscatter Scope. One was the Feywild machine, one was in the Shadowfell, and one was being rapidly constructed in the Hellcatch Valley of Marquet.[12]

Weeks later, after Ollie's Squint warned him about the Layaway being about to be under siege, the couple and Hondir left and buried the place so it wouldn't be found and scavenged. They mentioned the loss of the Veilscatter Scope, although without the Moontide Crown it no longer worked.[13]
