The Veil is Ank'Harel's largest crime syndicate.
Description[]
The Veil is an extremely secretive network of spies, assassins, and thieves that pervades Ank'Harel's society. Identities and personal details of members are concealed even within the organization, and the syndicate relocates its bases frequently to cover its tracks.[2]
The Veil actively opposes the Hand of Ord; they are each other's counterpoints for chaos and order respectively. As of 836 PD, the Hands of Ord had failed to root out and eliminate the Veil despite its best efforts.[3]
History[]
The Shemsilver family had funded the Veil for generations as of 836 PD, when Adima Shemsilver, a noble and the owner of the Luck's Run, was using half the casino's earnings to bankroll the Veil.[4]
At that time, a twenty-year-old human assassin and pirate from western Marquet, Ilena Hapayhari, had recently eliminated the old leadership of the Veil and taken its place, but only high-ranking members were aware she had done so.[3]
Also as of that time, Old Man Kruuk, who ran a bakery in the city's River District as a front, was an efficient fence for stolen goods with an impressive reach that should have been well beyond the capabilities of any individual, leading to rumors he was a high-ranking member of the Veil.[1] Indeed, his contacts included not only thieves but black-market spellcasters and mercenaries. The local Cobalt Soul suspected Kruuk of being involved in the illegal sale of dangerous magic items, which in fact he was: he was peddling a ruidium shortsword.[5]
