Elder Ushru (pronounced like OO-shroo)[6] is the eldest leader of Jigow's orc clans.
Description[]
Appearance[]
During Jigow's Festival of Merit, Ushru is seen wearing deep blue robes.[1]
Personality[]
Elder Ushru is a priest who takes visions and matters of destiny seriously, and he tries to impress upon strangers that these matters should be taken seriously and approached with honesty. However, he is not pushy, and he is quick to pick up on changes in people's demeanor.[7]
Elder Ushru is also an aging hunter who yearns to sustain the cultural heritage of Jigow's orcs in spite of the Kryn Dynasty's ham-handed attempts to maintain order and its suffocating drow culture.[3]
He professes to believe that true merit is proven over the course of one's life, not in a single day.[8]
Biography[]
Background[]
By 835 PD, Elder Ushru is an aging hunter who represents the orc clans of Jigow as part of a strained governing partnership with the Dynasty's assigned taskhand, Durth Mirimm.[9]
Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep[]
At the Festival of Merit in 836 PD, Elder Ushru is encountered as he announces the final Test of Merit. He and the goblin elder, Colbu Kaz, select the two teams to compete in that challenge, which is an underwater race through a cave system littered with dangers to retrieve a jeweled amulet, the Emerald Eye.[10] He and Colbu Kaz wait for the winners to come back with the Emerald Eye,[11] but when the teams return, Ushru either notices that one of the teams now has a different amulet or at least notices that their demeanor has changed, though he doesn't know it is because they have discovered the Jewel and experienced a vision from someone asking for their rescue.[8]
That changes overnight, when Elder Ushru has a vision of this special amulet being grasped by countless hands in a pool of blood, and a human insisting that those from the cave must find him. He asks those who claimed the amulet to join him for breakfast, and there asks if they can provide any context to help him understand the vision, and if they're honest, that leads him to positively identify the amulet as the Jewel of Three Prayers; he also interprets the vision the team when they retrieved the Jewel, suggesting that the logical next step is to travel to Bazzoxan.[12]
Relationships[]
As of 835 PD, Elder Ushru and the leader of Jigow's goblin clans, Elder Cubu-Ka, frequently challenge the edicts of the city's assigned taskhand, Durth Mirimm; this has created a strained partnership with Mirimm.[9]
At the Festival of Merit in 836 PD, Elder Ushru seems to work agreeably alongside the slightly differently named goblin Elder Colbu Kaz; they jointly choose the two teams to compete in the final challenge. Between the two of them, Ushru is more outspoken, and his keener eye leads him to takes more of an interest in those who find the Jewel of Three Prayers.[13]

Quotations[]
- "A vision came to me last night. A golden amulet rose to the surface of a pool of blood, and countless hands lunged upward out of the blood to grasp it. In turn, all the hands fell back into the pool until only one remained. The one whose hand claimed the amulet was a handsome man with curly hair and a somber expression. He turned to me and said, 'They must find me. The ones from the grotto.'"[14]
- "People do not stumble upon Vestiges without a reason."[15]
