Udaaks are fiendish behemoths that wander the plains of Xhorhas. They were brought from the Abyss to Exandria, but they lost their connection to the Abyss when The Divergence occurred.[1]

Description[]

Appearance[]

Udaaks resemble a demonic cross between a four-armed gorilla and an ox.[1] They stand around twenty feet tall and are just as wide. Their head sits directly on their shoulders with no neck to speak of, with four red eyes and a yawning mouth full of teeth and tusks.[2]

Characteristics[]

Udaaks are incredibly resilient and are immune to poison and all physical damage (bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing) from attacks with non-magical weapons. They also cannot be frightened, grappled, or restrained.[3] Thanks to their size, they are capable of swallowing prey the size of an ogre in one bite.[4] Despite these strengths, they appear to have sensitive hearing, and are vulnerable to sonic attacks.[5]

Udaaks are territorial, very dangerous, and very intimidating. They're mostly scavengers, but when hungry, they're prone to hunt and get angry.[6]

The udaak's immense strength allows them to be used as living siege engines, and have been magically controlled by the Kryn Dynasty through the use of special collars to be used against the Dwendalian Empire in the War of Ash and Light.[1]

History[]

The Calamity[]

As part of the climactic Battle of the Barbed Fields, devotees of the Prime Deities had to break through the garrison at the Betrayers' Rise.[7] The hero Alyxian and a company of soldiers fought through many demons of the Crawling King's horde, and among the corpses of that company and many demons, Alyxian struggled alone against a "gorilla-like demon".[8] Two known types of demons are compared to gorillas: barlguras[9] and udaaks.[1]

Campaign Two: The Mighty Nein[]

The Mighty Nein first saw an udaak when they were approaching the Xhorhasian city Asarius[10] and saw more of them kept in the city by soldiers as weapons of war.[11] Later, as the Mighty Nein rested during the chase of Obann disguised as a drow through the Barbed Fields, Jester Lavorre and Yasha Nydoorin (who were keeping watch) saw an udaak passing not far from Caleb Widogast's amber dome where they were.[12] In the morning, they saw the corpse of an udaak plundered by gloomstalkers.[13]

In The Ready Room of Bazzoxan, Caduceus Clay purchased the tusks of an udaak that were worth 200 gold pieces.[14]

Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep[]

On the road to Bazzoxan, one may encounter the corpse of an udaak punctured with many spears, axes, and a magical dagger belonging to one of the dozens of humans who died in the battle. Quasits hide in the udaak's fur as it slowly dissolves into black ichor.[15]

Trivia[]

  • As fiends that naturally roam Exandria, these behemoths are similar to demonfeed spiders, although these arachnids were originally Exandrian giant spiders.[16]
  • Udaaks are considered by the Dolorav tribe to be too dangerous to hunt.[17] According to Yasha Nydoorin, they were occasionally forced to fight udaaks that accidentally crossed paths with hunting parties, and a third to a half of the tribespeople would be lost in these encounters.[18]
