Tritons are aquatic humanoids with ties with the Elemental Plane of Water.[1][2]
Description[]
Appearance[]
Tritons are humanoids with bluish skin, blue or green hair, gill slits on their necks and fin-like features in their ears or legs. They also have webbed hands and feet.[3][4][1]
Personality[]
Tritons are benevolent and proud people who spend a lot of time under the sea, watching for any sign of dangers or elemental activity. Some of their communities are isolated, making it difficult for them to socialize with other creatures;[1] however, there are also cases where tritons become involved in the communities of other humanoids, especially if they have common goals regarding their magic or concern for the Elemental Plane of Water.[5][6]
Abilities[]
As a playable race, tritons have the following abilities:
- Ability Score Bonus: Tritons usually get +1 Strength, +1 Constitution and +1 Charisma.
- Amphibious: They can breathe air and water.
- Swim Speed: Tritons have a swimming speed of 30 feet.[1] That swimming speed can increase along with the walking speed.[7]
- Control Air and Water: All tritons know the Fog Cloud spell. If they reach 3rd level, they also acquire the ability to cast Gust of Wind, and at 5th level, some of them can cast Wall of Water,[1] while others learn Water Walk instead.[8] They can cast each of those spells once per day without using spell slots, and their usual spellcasting ability is Charisma.
- Darkvision: They can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light, but they can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
- Emisary of the Sea: Tritons can communicate simple ideas to other aquatic creatures, though they have no special ability to understand them in return.
- Guardians of the Depths: Since they are adapted to even the most extreme ocean depths, tritons have resistance to cold damage.
History[]
Tritons came to Exandria at some point during or previous to the Age of Arcanum,[9] as a race connected to the Elemental Plane of Water and related to the nereids.[1][10]
By the eve of the Calamity, at least one young triton had been brought to Avalir to study in the Sorcerer's University. In the night of celebration before the Replenishment, Maya (Cerrit Agrupnin's eldest daughter) was seen drinking and speaking to a female triton at the university.[11] The same night that girl was successfully evacuated from the city along with other sorcerer students.[12]
By 810 PD there are still tritons in Exandria,[2] and they seem to have contact with the Water Ashari of Vesrah.[13]
Notable tritons[]
- A teenage female triton who was studying in the Sorcerer's University of Avalir and survived the destruction of the city.[14][15]
- Yulan, a member of the Water Ashari, has triton features (including gills that allow him to breathe underwater) but looks more human, suggesting that he has mixed ancestry.[16][17]
Trivia[]
- Matthew Mercer confirmed their presence in Exandria in Twitter, even before they were explicitly mentioned on stream.[2]
- Their presence in the canon of Critical Role was reasserted when Brennan Lee Mulligan mentioned them in Exandria Unlimited: Calamity.
