Publisher's summary[]

The mystery of Artagan's hatred of the theatre is revealed! This fey trickster can't help but steal the spotlight, even while claiming to be above the drama. When chaos ensues and bridges are burned, will he have anyone left to turn to? In classic fabulous fey fashion, the show must go on.

Plot summary[]

An elven actor is called to testify, and narrates how in a satirical play in which he himself played Artagan, the archfey was so disgusted by the criticism of him that he tried to take over the show, and when he was rejected by the spectators, he set the building on fire, killing several fey.

After that statement, several members of the audience at the trial (including Robert Sharpe, Tyrelda, and Artagan's date the day he set the theater on fire) begin an argument over who should state their grievances first, which leads to a fight. The accused takes advantage of the argument to get rid of his handcuffs and begin an escape attempt. He manages to avoid potential threats (causing some mischief in the process) but is stopped by Keyleth of the Air Ashari, who is not very willing to let him leave given that in their last encounter the fey strangled her boyfriend; however, Artagan's pleas and reminder that he had helped Vox Machina save the world in time convince the archdruid, who transports them both to the Shademurk Forest.

Keyleth asks Artagan to convince her that he truly deserves freedom instead of justice, to which he responds by stating that Elmenore and Sammanar are only interested in making him an example to others, and that they are jealous of him; this prompts the archdruid to ask if he has even listened to those who have testified against him, and the archfey admits to not being sure. This sign of sincerity is interpreted favorably by Keyleth, and when Artagan says he needs to talk to someone who really knows him well, she agrees and sends him to the cabin of Jester Lavorre, who is surprised to see the Traveler.

Trivia[]

  • During the play Artagan hated so much, his character is shown being kissed by a woman wielding a sword while a male goat-looking fey holds on to him. This is a direct reference to an actual play in our world, a 2009 production of Twelfth Night that has an identical scene, with Anne Hathaway in Artagan's place, Audra McDonald as the woman with the sword, and Raul Esparza as the man; that scene became viral and even today is often used as reference for art or as a visual representation of a queer and/or love triangle scene.[2]
