The Re-Slayer’s Take is a weekly family-friendly actual play podcast releasing on Mondays beginning 20 May 2024, produced by Critical Role. "After six misfit mercenaries are rejected from the elite monster hunting group, The Slayer's Take, they band together as The Re-Slayer's Take, battling supernatural creatures across the rugged continent of Issylra."[3]

The story[]

Per Dani Carr, the series is completely canon.[4]

The podcast follows the adventures in Issylra of six individuals wanting to join the prestigious Slayer's Take. Their tale began in Himblewood around 839 PD,[5][6] during an event in which the monster hunter guild was allegedly looking for new recruits. Some of these candidates were Idrin Shadowstep, Farah Vallari, Heera Agneheart and Frog, and although there were many other people in the place, the four of them ended up forming a group while they signed up for the list of potential recruits. There they met Poogs the goblin and Timpani the firbolg. The latter started a presentation about the values of the guild, and called Frog, Farah, Idrin, and Heera to the stage; shortly after, while Timpani was showing them a captured gelatinous cube, he accidentally released it, causing some chaos in the local market as the four adventurers teamed up to defeat the ooze, causing them to be accepted into the Slayer's Take.

That night, the four recruits, as well as Timpani and Poogs, met in the forest, where the firbolg started sharing with them the ghost story of the druid Putridius Festerkin (allegedly an old member of the Slayer's Take who tried to control nature's power for his own gain and ended up dead); however, they were interrupted by a terrifying sound, followed by a violet light and the beginning of an avalanche.[7] The six adventurers (with some difficulty) managed to survive the wall of snow that was coming at them (although Poogs ended up buried for a few moments), and immediately afterwards they had to face four snowmen controlled by undead vines. When they thought they were safe, Poogs was kidnapped by some roots, and while they tried to rescue him, reaching a strange green light dome, Timpani admitted not to be a member of the Slayer's Take, but a failed recruit trying to show the guild that strange things were happening in the region.

After Idrin, Farah, Frog and Heera agreed to help the firbolg despite his deceit, he guided them to a secret place: a bog in which a dwarf, Gurt Stumpstuck, identified the four of them as the chosen ones of a prophecy, giving them magic items to wield against undead threats. With their new weapons, the adventurers return to the green dome, being able to pass throw it.[8] The adventuring party appeared on a frozen tundra where they stumbled upon the abandoned lair of Rimefang, a white dragon famously defeated by the Slayer's Take and Vox Machina decades ago. Inside, they found Poogs, trapped inside the ribcage of the fallen dragon, but he was released when eight strong marionette tendrils took control of the bones and used them to attack the group. Even with the help of their new weapons, they struggled fighting against that undead enemy, but with some effort, as well as Timpani's healing magic, they managed to defeat the marionettes, and Rimefang became a dead dragon once more. After that they found a bulb connected to the vines, and when they destroyed it, the green aura that was filling the area finally disappeared; they also found a box with magical earrings they took, learning they could use them to communicate among them.

Determined to use the encounter as a proof for the Slayer's Take, Timpani and the adventurers returned to Himblewood with the dragon's skull and arranged a meeting with members of the guild. They, however, were unimpressed by the firbolg and his alleged feat, considering he had just looted Rimefang's lair with the help of some equally strange crackpots. This left the younger adventurers disappointed with the Slayer's Take, and when the two members were leaving, Idrin heard one of them say they shouldn't tell Osysa about the meeting. After a conversation in which Timpani promised to be more honest in the future, the others decided to follow him, determined to uncover the truth the druid was seeking. The following day they settled into an apartment on the outskirts of Vasselheim to use as a base, and officially took on a group name: the Re-Slayer's Take.[9]

The first mission the new group accepted was to visit Josgren's Hollow, where, according to a deaf tabaxi, a strange fog (identified as a collective of ghosts known as whispers) was kidnapping people. When they arrived there, after a brief inconvenience involving quicksand, the adventurers noticed the town was extremely silent and deteriorated, and when Igor, a member of the Slayer's Take, appeared shouting at them, the noise attracted the attention of the fog, who shallowed the boastful wereboar and attacked the Re-Slayer's Take.[10] After they managed to defeat the strange fog-like spores they were called by the local mayor, who told them that someone had warned them about the whispers days before, and he had put him in prison to avoid scandal; however, given that the person had been right, he asked the adventurers to break him out of jail and look for a way to solve the undead problem, offering a reward if they did. Although most of them didn't trust the politician (since he clearly didn't take care of his empoverished neighbors), the decided to help the wrongfully imprisoned individual; with some distraction from Farah and Timpani and some additional assistance from Idrin and Frog, Heera freed Janet, a charming goliath that turned out to be Timpani's old friend.[11]

Janet, once he had taken them to his caravan to equip them with musical instruments, guided them to the whispers' lair, where they saw them guarding a boat with all the people they had kidnapped, and surrounded by mushrooms with which they maintained their bodies made of spores; leading them was a large entity, a whispering mouther, an undead equivalent of the gibbering mouther defeated by the Slayer's Take decades before. The adventurers approached strategically, destroying the source of the spores and then using music and sounds to weaken the ghosts. While these turned out to be formidable enemies and nearly neutralized them several times, bringing Janet to the brink of death, in the end the Re-Slayer's Take emerged victorious after Idrin struck down the whispering mouther with a Lightning Bolt. They returned to Josgren's Hollow, receiving a warm welcome, followed by the forced deposition of Vaughn Josgren Jr on Heera's recommendation, the redistribution of local wealth, and the reincorporation of Janet into the community, with whom they held a party before leaving with the rescued wereboar Igor, who told them that the Slayer's Take should not give them problems in the future. Shortly after, a seagull brought Timpani news: they had a new job. Thus, they returned to Vasselheim, ignoring that a monument in their honor would be erected in Josgren's Hollow, or that a few days later an adventuring party of four would appear looking for them in the village.[12]

After some preparation Timpani brought the group to Shoresight Isle, and although their arrival was somewhat chequered (since the erosion had left the oak through which they came too close to a cliff) they recovered and went to visit Timpani's friend, a mature elven mage called Duderonomous, who was living in the lighthouse. He was paranoid about strange activities in town, and the adventurers themselves notice the oddly positive behavior of the locals despite the inclement weather. When they went to the Honeycomb Inn they confirmed everyone there was acting weird, becoming aggressive the moment Duddy tried to give the Re-Slayer's Take details about last time The Slayer's Take visited the island. A battle ensued, and it became clear that the villagers were being controlled by something undead and with tentacles that were only visible in reflections. Combining non-lethal damage to the hosts, actual attacks against the invisible tentacles, and verbal persuasion to remind people of their actual lives, they started freeing the villagers one by one; when they though they were done, however, the entity made a psychic attack against Frog and tried to drag her inside a puddle of ale, although the monk's friends managed to save her. Duderonomous guided them all back to the lighthouse, but he suddenly became confused with the location, before his voice changed and his eyes started glowing red, with a third one opening in his forehead.[13] The spirit, which belonged to a dead aboleth, used the Magnificent Mansion spell enchanting the lighthouse, sent the adventurers to different illusory rooms to torture them and try to take control of their minds, but eventually it was forced to release them (although not without mental scars). Farah, who had already identified the threat, encouraged her friends and shortly after they went to save Duddy, still under the control of the ghost. The aboleth was laughing in the darkness through the reflections of the windows, but Farah broke them and Idrin cast Light to turn on the light house, revealing the spectral form of the entity; then the blood hunter shot it with her crossbow, forcing it to retreat to a well on the other side of the island. Now that Duddy was free, they used instructions he had left written on his back to restore his memories using colored potions.[14]

Duderonomous revealed to the group that the reflection ghost of the aboleth had been looking for its bones, which the mage had hidden inside his bag of holding; the aboleth had also taken the elf's awakened pig companion, Thyme, as punishment. After determining that said bones could be used to make the spirit easier to hit (at the risk of empowering it), the adventurers decided to use them as bait, and went to the well, where they rescued Thyme and started teasing the aboleth, bringing it outside of the well and within reach of the lighthouse's light. Although it took a while and the monster managed to knock most of the group unconscious, they weakened it enough for Heera to destroy it with her rapier. After that Timpani used his magic to close the portal the aboleth had been using in the cave inside the well, but as he was doing so, a spectral black finger appeared and hit the firbolg, leaving him mentally confused. Timpani ran away towards a tree and cast Transport via Plants, going through the portal and being closely followed by the Re-Slayers, although leaving Duderonomous behind. They appeared in the Utesspire Mountains, and Poogs, despondent, said they could take Timpani to his old home to see if they could help him there.[15]

With some effort, the adventurers arrived to Poogs' old territory, and even though he was terrified and ashamed of his people and their potential aggressions, they were surprised when they found their settlement, Hug Hive, filled with cheerful and kind goblinoids willing to help them, and led by Freedom Windsong, a doctor Poogs used to know, and who accepted to help Timpani. Since the process would take hours, the Re-Slayers were shown hospitality, and brought to a small monument representing one of Poogs' cupcakes, since witnessing him baking one for Timpani a year before moved Freedom deeply, lifting the Curse of Strife from him, and leading him to do the same for the rest of his neighbors. While they were there it was revealed that the Slayer's Take had visited the area a long time ago to defeat a mind flayer, and that its skeleton, which had adorned the door of the settlement for a while, had disappeared a week before. Shortly after, the adventuring party was psychically attacked and threatened,[16] and they were informed that a horde of undead was approaching Hug Hive; therefore, they hurried to organize the local goblins to defend their village while Freedom focused on curing Timpani.

The attack began, and while the marionette-controlled skeletons were numerous, they were able to deal with them with relative ease, identifying and destroying the source of the undead tendrils. When the mind flayer's skeleton appeared it began to psychically attack the Re-Slayers, knocking Frog unconscious, but Farah managed to defeat it; however, when the corpse fell, the Timberblight itself remained and left the area. Shortly after that, Timpani reappeared, completely restored and ready to face their enemy.[17]

After saying goodbye to Freedom and the Hug Hive goblins, the Re-Slayers returned to the tree that had brought them to the Utesspire Mountains, and using the Transport via Plants spell they return to the Vesper Timberland, heading to the Dead Man's Table; there they found Putridius Festerkin, and fought him. The Timberblight was powerful and used psychic, necrotic, and poisonous attacks to keep the adventurers at bay, but they didn't give up, and thanks to Timpani's healing and their magic weapons managed to defeat the undead druid.

When the adventuring party was preparing to go to Himblewood to rest there, they were intercepted by men from the Slayer's Take led by Heldwell, who, fed up with the interference of the Re-Slayer's Take, was willing to kill them and take their weapons to give them to other adventurers. However, before he could do so, one of the guild members, Sweeny, intervened, teleporting with the Re-Slayers to a bakery, where Kashaw Vesh informed them that Osysa wished to speak with them;[18] on their way there he explained to them that Heldwell had been actually expelled from the guild for hiding information, and his actions and those of his underlings weren't in the name of the actual Slayer's Take.

When the adventurers met with Osysa the sphinx, she inquisitively questioned them about their motivations and achievements, and began to analyze them one by one, showing them visions about their future, their past, and reciting cryptic prophetic verses. At the end, Idrin was very shaken, and when given the choice to travel to Xhorhas to deal with a danger affecting his people, the wizard agreed to do it, giving his magical beads to Poogs, and leaving before they could stop him. The rest of the Re-Slayers were brought back to Timpani's home, and Kash informed them that his guild would collaborate with them a bit more from now on; however, he left when Heera expressed how bad of a moment it was for the group. After a brief conversation about Idrin's motivations and Poogs's ability to use his beads (encouraged by Frog, he agreed to wear them for the time being) they went inside, and Timpani found a letter with some money sent by his cousin, Pumat Sol, so he told the rest of the team that they should go shopping.[19]

After spending their first night in their new headquarters (quiet, except for Heera and her nightmares), the group decided to follow Timpani's advice and go shopping, while the druid went on some kind of date by himself. Heera acquired an exotic black egg after deciding she wanted a pet; Farah visited Dr. Fitzwaggle and agreed to test some of his creations in exchange for money (without noticing the strange undead presence of his store), and Frog visited a library in which she met Devexian, the Aeormaton that found her and repaired her, who agreed to teach her things about their people and their past, and shared with her information about the place where he found her, in case she wanted to investigate it. After all that, the group met again, and when Timpani appeared, seemingly after an inauspicious end to his date, he insisted on going to lunch.[20]

When Frog told her friends about her conversation with Devexian, they agreed to accompany her to Spectrum Gorge to look for her lost pieces. A Transport via Plants later appeared there, near a mining outpost, but immediately afterwards a landslide occurred caused by a marionette-filled magma landshark. With some difficulty, the adventurers took refuge in the mining outpost, where they met Xella Blacktongue, the mysterious merchant Devexian had told Frog about. He told them that he had been there for two months, but that the landshark had isolated him and taken his bodyguard, Sasha; the Re-Slayers agreed to defeat the creature and and do business with him if he helped them. They entered the tunnels, looking for an underground river that the magma-based monster avoided, but when they arrived they saw that its source was half blocked by a fungal formation.[21] After some debate the adventurers decided to split up, and while Frog focused on unclogging the course of the underground river, the other adventurers faced the landshark magma; Although the creature was initially very aggressive and gave them problems, the distraction of the water current and the location of the marionette bulbs on its body left it vulnerable, and Heera finally managed to finish it off, freeing Sasha in the process, whom the marionettes had been draining for days. After they healed her and she explained what had happened to her, Xella, thankful, rewarded the Re-Slayers with some magic items, and told them about something happening in a gnomish village nearby.[22]

The following day, after a brief argument about how much should Poogs be involved in fights, they reached Seedfeld, the settlement Xella had told them about, discovering it was under a strange yellow cloud that completely obscured the sun. They had to bribe some wind gibbons, but they managed to access the town itself, apparently empty; eventually they found a gnomish woman cleaning the streets with a broom, and shortly after that they met Norbert Klott, who explained to them that after the cloud appeared and ruined their crops most of the villagers had left, and their local protectors (including the woman, Zora the Red) had ended up in a hypnotic-like trance that prevented them from doing things beyond a single task. Although the adventurers were able to determine that some sort of yellow pollen was affecting the paladins' minds, they were unable to cure them, so they decided to leave Poogs looking after them and follow Norbert to the apparent source of the problem: a cave in the nearby mountain, where the Slayer's Take had defeated a troll a decade earlier. The Re-Slayers managed to climb to the entrance of the cave, where there was an undead presence, but the difficulties in getting there left Heera injured, so they took a break before going in.[23]

After healing Heera, the adventurers entered the cave, just to return to the entrance shortly after, injured but without memories of it; after figuring out there was a strange magic in the area, they used ropes to keep them connected, and let Heera, Farah, and Timpani go in while Frog and Norbert stayed outside. When the two adventurers appeared outside but the firbolg druid didn't the remaining members of the group, concerned, activated four of the daggers of the Mega Magic Paladins, and with the information they had gathered/deduced, entered the cave together and managed to reach a chamber with a portal; shortly after Timpani crossed it, followed by spectral gas that took control of the skeleton of the local troll, Ügel.[24] The adventurers began to attack the troll, discovering that the yellow gas of his lair, as well as the mysterious necrotic light moving through it, were constantly healing the monster and protecting it from radiant damage; even with the help of the magical daggers there came a moment when half of the group was on the verge of death, so Heera, sensing the attention of the Strife Emperor, made a deal with him, causing great damage to Ügel and buying enough time to defeat its undead form. The lair's necrotic presence was revealed to be Heldwell, who began taunting them from the reflections of the walls until Norbert intervened, encouraging the Re-Slayers to destroy the chamber, after which they fled out of the cave as Ügelber collapsed and became a caldera.[25]

After returning to Seedfeld they were welcomed by the restored Mega Magic Paladins and a very tired Poogs, and after Norbert received a reward (a magical white dagger) they celebrated and spent the night there. The following morning they left to follow the direction marked by Frog's compass, indicating that one of her missing pieces were westward, crossing the Utesspire Mountains. During the journey Heera pointed out that Heldwell had Gurt's lantern in the fight, so they decided to camp there for the night while Timpani went check on his friend, returning that same night and explaining the tree that acted as door to his swamp had been destroyed. After a tense argument about the new dangers that came with Heldwell being their enemy and their lack of resources, they agreed on finding Frog's missing piece first and then returning to Vasselheim to potentially get some information from the Slayer's Take.[26] The adventurers spent an uneventful night, except for an unexpected visit from Dr. Fitzwaggle and a dark nightmare on Heera's part.

The next morning, after breakfast, they continued making their way through the mountains, and they found a roc nest, managing to put the mother to sleep with sleepy cupcakes to be able to escape; shortly after, Heera, stressed by everything she had recently experienced, began to cry, and her friends consoled her. When they heard multiple detonations in the distance they followed the sound until they found a valley with a mysterious cabin in it.[27] After climbing some stairs full of traps, they met the person who lived there: Alexander Parade, an eccentric professor who had spent more than a century in the valley, being attacked by strange twig-like creatures, and who seemed interested in technology old and new, having in his possession two mechanical arms belonging to Frog. After talking a little with him, they discovered that the dwarf wanted to fix Douglas, his little pet automaton, and Frog agreed to help him with that if he helped them in return.[28]

The professor guided them to a crater where he did a demonstration of how to use his powder, and shortly after, a twigman appeared and stole her screwdriver. Alexander helped them find the creatures' lair, beneath a dead willow on top of a hill, and by interrogating a pine tree nearby, the adventurers learned that the twigmen had been originally created by a night hag potentially connected to Xella. They decided to attack the twigmen with another explosion, but that caused the creatures to get aggressive, being immediately followed by a huge two-faced twigman.[29] The adventurers dealed with the numerous wooden enemies, which included other two huge twigmen; the last of them, who dragged Frog inside their lair, was the one who had stolen the "heart" of Douglas, Alexander's dog-like automaton, so the dwarf defeated it. After investigating the lair for a bit longer and learning that Xella had been raised there, the group left with their missing items, as well as the hag's heartstone. After reactivating Douglas and celebrating with Alexander back in his cabin, Frog was allowed to take her mechanical arms, and the Re-Slayers said goodbye to the professor, prepared to return to Vasselheim.[30]

After returning to Vasselheim and resting, the adventurers received a letter from Kashaw Vesh in which he asked them to visit Heldwell's mansion on the outskirts, given that strange activities and disappearances had been detected. After discussing the matter, as well as and Heera's most recent problems, she, Farah, and Frog agreed to go, while Timpani and Poogs traveled to the Hug Hive to run errands. In the (incredibly dilapidated) mansion, the three adventurers found evidence that a group connected to the Spectral Hand had been there before them, as well as signs that Heldwell detested Timpani and them. With some effort, the trio accessed a secret path inside the mansion, protected by a magical obelisk.[31] After a while they found the four Spectral Hand adventurers chained and drained of energy, and after some tense discussion, they freed them; however, this caused the floor to collapse and they ended up separated into different sections of the tunnels. After facing the different visions and terrors summoned by the ghosts of the dungeon, they managed to meet again, and together they arrived at a large funerary chamber with a sarcophagus from which a mummy emerged.[32] The seven adventurers, overwhelmed by spirits and the surprising power of the mummy, initially found themselves in trouble, but after identifying a gem as the source of the undead's power, they managed to destroy it and end the threat, albeit with a disturbing revelation: the mummy was none other than Igor, the wereboar who used to accompany Heldwell, transformed into an undead by the wizard's lantern. After they all left the mansion the adventurers of the Spectral Hand asked if they could take the credit of what had happened there, in order to receive a reward from their patron, but Heera offered them instead to become the Re-Slayers' interns in exchange for a small fee, which they accepted.[33]

The next day, the adventuring party, while their new apprentices were cleaning, spent some time in their home, sharing information and gifts from the day they spent apart, and talking about the undead activity caused by Heldwell and the Timberblight and the energy they were using to raise so many undead. They were interrupted by a client who offered them a massive amount of gold in exchange of dealing with a monster in the Thorain Tundra. They agreed, and shortly after they received a letter from Idrin telling them about his situation and encouraging them with their adventures. The following day they left Vasselheim, leaving the adventurers of the Spectral Hand alone in their building.[34] When they arrived there they learned from Derek (who turned out to be the accountant who tried to join the Slayer's Take in Himblewood) that the spirit had attacked a dozen times in just a week, and after a bit they deduced that it was an Apex Eidolon angered after its forest was destroyed and its sacred runic stones were removed. Since the group didn't want to kill the spirit, they decided the best option was to use the stones to lure it away to a new territory.[35] Although they managed to locate the aforementioned rocks, when the time came to use them, the adventurers realized that it was unfair to relocate the Apex Eidolon when they had no guarantee that the condominium would not expand into its new territory; therefore, they decided to destroy the existing buildings, and the elk-like spirit appeared to thank them.

Shortly after that, Heldwell appeared to claim the power of the eidolon, and a battle ensued: although the Re-Slayer's Take got really close to free the nature spirit, their enemy was very strong, dealing a lot of damage to the adventurers and using his lantern to absorb the power of his victim.[36] Determined to cause as much damage as possible, Heldwell kept attacking, and Farah died because of her injuries. However, seconds later a new figure arrived: Pike Trickfoot, Champion of the Everlight, had been tracking Grimm and the Timberblight, and joined the fight; with her assistance, the Re-Slayers were able to defeat the enemy by destroying the lantern that gave him power, freeing the Apex Eidolons and causing him to rot away. Then, Pike resurrected Farah and used Temple of the Gods to give the adventurers a place to rest. She stayed with them for a while, talking, giving them advice, and granting a boon from her goddess before leaving them there to bring the bear spirit home. While the Re-Slayer's Take were there, recovering, Farah saw a raven, and started following it through the snow into the darkness.[37]

Trivia[]

  • The project was originally pitched by Sam Riegel and Matt Mercer.[38]
  • Most episode titles are alliterative.
  • Whenever someone rolls a natural 1 in this campaign George Primavera rolls on a table to see how bad the consequences are in the game.[39]
  • According to Timpani, the Slayer's Take are too busy to care about a group with a knock-off name like the Re-Slayer's take.[40] Osysa, however, proved him wrong by stating that she was quite irritated by it.[41]
  • According to Heera Agneheart, each member of the team represents a positive trait that opposes the concept of rot: innovation (Idrin), spirit of discovery (Frog), knowledge of the ages (Farah), and endless optimism (Poogs). She also valued Timpani's general presence in the team (and the fact that he put them together in the first place), and Farah added that Heera would represent hope.[42]
