"The Mountain Range of Gold" is a three-part series of books owned by Taryon Darrington as part of the personal library in his room in the Darrington Estate in Wildemount. They are just some of the many fantasy novels that Tary reads, and Tary's mother, Mariya Darrington, thought they were wonderful books.
In the first book, one of the main characters is believed to be dead. However, halfway through the second book, he is revealed to be alive, dressed in white robes and with a new power. Tary pointed out that it was a tip-off that the reader is never shown the body in the first book.
- The plot of "The Mountain Range of Gold" is a reference to "The Lord of the Rings". In the book "The Fellowship of the Ring" by J.R.R. Tolkien, the wizard Gandalf the Grey is apparently killed in the Mines of Moria beneath the Misty Mountains. However, he later returns in "The Two Towers", even more powerful, with the new title "Gandalf the White". Many (if not all) of the Critical Role cast are fans of Tolkien's books, and the creators of Dungeons & Dragons were strongly influenced by the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.
