Despite his weakened state, Grog confronts his uncle, Kevdak, in a fight to the death. The battle is intense, with Grog taking a beating at the hands of his uncle's Titanstone Knuckles, another Vestige of Divergence. As Grog is about to fall, the rest of Vox Machina arrives, just in time to join the fray.
Plot summary[]
On a deserted hillside at night, a portal opens and Keyleth, Vax, Vex, and Percival step through. Keyleth is puzzled because they don't see Whitestone, but Percy assures her they're in the right valley. Vax notices paw prints that abruptly disappear, and when he holds out his hand, it goes through a dome of magic hiding the city from sight.
Lady Kima, Allura, Cassandra, Shaun Gilmore, and Keeper Yennen are meeting in the castle. Keeping up the cloaking spell is growing taxing. The party arrives, learning that their trip to the Fey Realm, while it was only three days to them, has been three weeks in Exandria. They admit they've misplaced the other three party members, and Allura casts a spell to learn they are alive and in Westruun. They see Grog step forward to challenge Kevdak.
In Westruun, Grog greets his uncle. He is here to finish what Kevdak started. To restore the honor of the Herd, he challenges Kevdak to single combat. Hidden behind a crate, Scanlan and Pike are watching in horror, and Kaylie reveals she has followed them. They continue watching from hiding as the fight begins. The still-weakened Grog attacks recklessly and is being soundly beaten, and as he lies bleeding Pike runs forward to help and is spotted, along with Scanlan and Kaylie. The Herd attacks them as well, easily defeating them, and Kevdak impales Grog on a spike. But when Kevdak threatens Pike, Grog remembers Earthbreaker Groon's voice asking him "Where does your strength come from?" Grog rages, his muscles growing back to normal, and attacks Kevdak again, but Kevdak activates the Titanstone Knuckles, roughly doubling in size.
The immensely powerful Kevdak manhandles Grog until he is a barely conscious bloody pulp. Kevdak demands to know what made him think he could stop Kevdak, and Grog gasps out "friends," as he sees the shadowy figures of the rest of Vox Machina on the rooftops. He realizes his strength comes from his friends. The herdmembers laugh, but as Kevdak prepares for a killing blow, Grog calls out, "Vox Machina... fuck shit up!"
The rest of the party spring into action against the entire Herd of Storms. Their combined strength against the Herd kills many, leaving Kevdak and Grog fighting each other until Grog is able to land a blow that nearly severs Kevdak's arm. Kevdak, however, simply rips it the rest of the way off and uses it as a club, rallying the Herd. Zanror, still in chains, joins the battle against his father Kevdak, but it is going very badly.
Vex'ahlia releases Trinket from her locket Raven's Slumber and leaps on her broom. She shouts to Grog asking if he wants to try something crazy, and when he agrees, pulls him into the locket, flies him upward, and releases him high above. As he plummets, bloodaxe held high, Grog cries, "Strongjaw!" and lands on Kevdak, cleaving him in two. The force of the fall is too much for Grog, however, and he crumbles slowly to his knees and then to the ground, unconscious.
Pike rushes to him, healing as much as she can, and he painfully rises to his feet, retrieving the Titanstone Knuckles and pulling them on. The herd begins chanting, "Strongjaw. Strongjaw. Strongjaw." Grog notices his cousin Zanror, and when he asks why he is shackled, Zanror tells him he finally stood up to Kevdak. Grog crushes the shackles, and raises him up, making him the new Thunderlord of the Herd of Storms. He invites the Herd to help slay the dragon.
That night, the Herd and Vox Machina are celebrating in a tavern, serenaded by Scanlan and Dr. Dranzel's Spectacular Traveling Troupe. Vex and Keyleth fill in Pike about their adventures, and Keyleth notices Vax standing alone outside. He sees a vision of the Matron of Ravens, but is interrupted by Keyleth, come to ask him awkwardly if he'd like to dance. His mind on the Matron, he turns her down and walks off. Keyleth sadly returns to the others, where Pike is unhappily watching Kaylie flirt with Scanlan as they perform onstage.
Meanwhile, Grog, Zanror, and Percy are strategizing. Umbrasyl returns to town every few days, and Zanror suggests a trap, exciting Percy. Zanror announces to the Herd they'll attack at dawn, amended slightly to noon, and they all go back to drinking.
As their performance ends, Kaylie suggests to Scanlan that he escort her upstairs, making Pike sad and thoughtful. When they arrive at Kaylie's room, Scanlan immediately strips to his underwear and lies on the bed. Kaylie pulls out a rope, and sexily ties his arms to the bedposts. As she does, she tells him about her childhood, and her mother who gave up everything for her. Most of Dr. Dranzel's stories about Scanlan, though, she'd already heard from her mother, who would be proud she's finally meeting the silver-tongued devil who whispered empty promises in her ear, then disappeared. With Scanlan's arms pinioned, she pulls out her blade and holds it to his throat.

Quotations[]
- Grog: (to Kevdak) You think history will remember you? I'm told a dragon made the mighty Kevdak, wielder of the Titanstone Knuckles, bend the knee. So tell me, Uncle, do you still have your shriveled nutsack, or did you give that to the dragon, too?
- Grog: My strength... comes from my friends.
- Grog: Vox Machina... fuck shit up!
- Zanror: At dawn, we shall whet our blades against the hide of a dragon!
Percy: Uh, we might need a little more time than that. My contraptions tend to have a lot of gears and moving bits...
Grog: And there's the drinking. We need more time for drinking.
Zanror: At noon, we shall whet our blades!
Grog: At dawn, we plan! - Scanlan: (to Kaylie) And then, I disguised us all as cows!
- Scanlan: (to Kaylie) Wait, I'm daddy?!
