Plot summary[]
In a flashback, Allura Vysoren's adventuring party is walking through a village, with Kima and Allura bickering. The scene shifts to the two fighting a dangerous creature together and continuing to bicker until Kima finally gets in the killing blow.
Returning to the present, Allura is anxiously worrying about the missing Kima, who is alone on the mountain with Vorugal in pursuit. Vex'ahlia can sense Vorugal nearby, and although Allura wants to go find Kima immediately, Percy and Vex urge her to wait. Eventually, however, she convinces them, and Vex points out to Percy that getting involved with other party members only complicates things.
Meanwhile in the hells, the other party members are running for their lives with Yenk in hot pursuit.
Back in Exandria, Vorugal is prowling in search of the hiding (and freezing) Kima. Eventually she loses patience and runs, closely pursued by the dragon. Allura spots her and teleports to her aid, joining the battle with magic. However, Kima is pushed over a cliff edge. On Vex's broom, Percy is able to hit the dragon with Bad News. After dropping him off with Allura, Vex goes in search of Kima whom she finds hurtling downward and catches her with vines shot from her bow Fenthras just in time. Percy and Allura are chased by Vorugal, with both getting in several blows on the creature. Finally, alone against the dragon, Percy shoots him at close range with Bad News, bringing him down but not out.
Back in the hells, pursued by a fiend, the rest of Vox Machina are searching for the portal which must be opened from the other side.
Allura and Kima joyously reunite, hugging one another before the bickering begins again. Eventually, Allura admits that Kima is unpredictable, and it frightens her. Kima apologizes, saying it's just her way of keeping Allura out of danger. Percy reminds them they need to open the gateway, and they run into the cavern where Kima and Allura begin working to open the portal. Just then, they hear Vorugal prowling outside, and the dragon bursts into the cavern.
In the Hells, the rest of the group is fighting off Yenk, trying to buy time for Keyleth working on the slowly opening portal. Vax flies at the fiend and is brought down, but Grog and Scanlan come to his aid. Pike runs in as well and her new Plate of the Dawnmartyr absorbs Yenk's flames until it can hold no more and explodes, burning her hair off. The portal opens and they all dash through, pursued by the fiend who explodes into the cavern in flames. Vorugal and Yenk battle each other until the dragon rips off Yenk's arm and eventually crushes his head, but Vorugal is seriously wounded as well.
Grabbing Mythcarver from Scanlan, Kima runs forward alone and attacks, throwing the Vestige into Vorugal's chest before driving it home with several blows from her maul. The others join her, all attacking the dragon with everything they have. Finally, on Vex's broom, Vex and Keyleth together shoot an arrow enhanced with druidic magic into the creature, hitting its heart. From it, a large blooming tree grows. Kima finishes the barely-breathing Vorugal by smashing his eye with her maul. Vex approaches Percy, who hastily states that he knows they aren't together, however she says that doesn't mean they have to be apart, and rests her head on his shoulder. As they stand happily, Percival musingly notices the dragon scales on the ground.
Meanwhile, Thordak sees Vorugal's scrying sphere go dark and crack. Knowing he is dead, the dragon reacts with anger, calling the other dragons all useless. However, his spawn are hatching and need their first prey. Suddenly, Anna Ripley interrupts, telling him she has the perfect place in mind.
Vox Machina is freezing and exhausted, and Allura must rest before she can teleport them elsewhere. Scanlan offers "Chateau Shorthalt" for the night, using the magical key he found in Umbrasyl's lair to create a magnificent mansion in which they can spend the night in comfort.
