"The Feast of Realms" (LVM1x03) is the third episode of the first season of The Legend of Vox Machina. Vox Machina is invited to the palace for a formal dinner, where Percy encounters murderous figures from his past: the mysterious Lord Sylas and Lady Delilah Briarwood. While gathering more information about the Briarwoods, a battle ensues. In the aftermath, the team discovers Percy’s tortured past has left something dark brewing inside of him.

Plot summary

The De Rolo family talks and laughs together. The scene is interrupted by Percy and one of his sisters fleeing in the night, bleeding and chased by dogs, and by the family being slaughtered by assassins. As they flee, Percy's sister is shot by multiple arrows and she falls. The now-adult Percy wakes in bed from his nightmare, and, after a moment, leaves his room. He runs into Vex'ahlia, who asks if he had a bad dream. He responds, "Is there any other kind?"

During breakfast in their new keep, Allura Vysoren arrives to reminds them of Sovereign Uriel's feast tonight. She expresses concern about the group's manners, but Percy assures her that he will brief them all on proper behavior.

Vox Machina arrives at the banquet in their finery and reluctantly surrenders their weapons. Percy is enthusiastic about the banquet and the chance to feel respectable again. However, Delilah Briarwood and Sylas Briarwood's arrival from Whitestone is announced, causing Percy to panic. Vex notices, and he tells her that the Briarwoods took everything from him. As the Briarwoods are staying in the castle, Vax slips away to search their room for any indications of their plans. The remainder of Vox Machina go to dinner and are seated opposite the Briarwoods, who are in turn seated next to Uriel.

Throughout dinner, Percy glares at the Briarwoods, and his friends struggle to flag his attention and offer advice. Vax uses his serpent belt to distract the guards and successfully enters the Briarwoods' room. Uriel threatens to send troops to check on Whitestone, but Sylas magically hypnotizes him into backing down. Only Keyleth notices. Delilah tells the table how she and her husband became stewards of Whitestone: the cover story is that the de Rolos died of a rare illness, but the truth is they grew bored of rule and abdicated after their children stole the treasury. Percy loses his temper and accuses her of lying. In the ensuing silence, the Briarwoods take their leave. Vex pulls Vox Machina away from the table, and Percy explains that the truth is the Briarwoods slaughtered his family. As the Briarwoods pass a mirror, Sylas is revealed to be a vampire.

Vax discovers a book mentioning The Whispered One and hides it in his coat at the sound of conversation. Before he can escape, the Briarwoods silently enter behind him. After Vax fails to pass himself off as a servant and fails to flirt with them, Sylas enthralls him. Vox Machina realizes that Vax may be in danger. Scanlan distracts the banquet-goers with a performance to allow the others to slip away. Sylas bites Vax's neck, breaking the magical charm. Vax barely pulls away and jumps out the window. The Briarwoods follow.

Vex realizes Vax is in danger. The group collects their weapons, and they come to Vax's aid outside. However, Sylas' blood-drinking sword, his indestructibility and regeneration ability, and Delilah's magic are too powerful for the group. Vox Machina is saved only by Keyleth creating a wall of large plants between them and the Briarwoods.

Noise from the fight attracts the palace guards. Desmond arrives with their luggage, but Sylas kicks him off the carriage. As Sylas drives them away, Delilah cheerfully invites Percy to visit them in Whitestone. Percy angrily yells at the group for allowing the Briarwoods to escape. Turning onto Desmond, Percy puts on a mask reminiscent of a plague doctor's mask and threatens Desmond with his gun. As he does, a strange, hissing smoke surrounds Percy. Despite Desmond's pleas that he knows nothing about the Briarwoods' plans, Percy shoots off Desmond's fingers and declares Desmond's soul forfeit.

Uriel and the guards arrive, with the oblivious Scanlan close behind, and Uriel calls for Vox Machina's arrest.

Trivia

• Though the episode was announced to be releasing at midnight PST on January 28, 2022, it released eight hours early at midnight UTC (or GMT) instead.
• This episode is adapted from "The Feast" (1x24) and "Crimson Diplomacy" (1x25).
• Scanlan's formal attire in this episode is a flamboyant pink and purple outfit with a light up codpiece. This is presumably a reference to Sam's own outfit in the episode "The Stalking Nightmare" (2x29), which in turn was referencing his habit of referring to Scanlan's "cube".
• As a surprise for Matt, the design team intentionally designed a character model that looked like him to appear in each episode. The character appears at the desk for the "cloak room" for the banquet asking Vox Machina to hand over their weapons, then again when the group forcibly retrieves their weapons.
• The song Scanlan sings to distract the nobles is Pull My Beads Of Love. It was sung at the Watch Party in impromptu karaoke by Sam. The second stanza was played during the credits of the episode.
