The Dreamer was a crab-like entity worshiped as a benign spirit by the people of Drobanagos (named after it) in the island of Athova-Rae, in the Shattered Teeth. As an NPC, the Dreamer was played by Matthew Mercer.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Dreamer looked like a gargantuan nightmarish crab with a shell covered by spines and remains of sunken ships
Biography[]
Background[]
At some point before 595 PD the people of Athova-Rae founded a village they called Drobanagos ("home of the dreamer" in the language of the Galapa),[2] where they honored the Dreamer in the Musetide Festival, which included a magical dance called "the calling of the Dreamer", that usually made the great crab appear. This ritual was repeated for hundreds of years, and the Dreamer granted its protection upon the villagers.[3] The rest of the time it rested inside a cave.[4]
"Choose Their Adventure...Again!" (Sx81)[]
In this semicanonical special, set at some point before 795 PD,[5] three sirens, outraged by the fact that the Dreamer was benevolent towards the people of the island, they decided to prepare a ritual with which to subject the crab to their will, so that they could control it to destroy the villagers. Using trickery, they managed to lure a group of adventurers, the Glorious Ones, to the cave, since they needed a blood sacrifice. However, they didn't expect the mercenaries to be stronger than them, and they were all killed. During the battle, the Dreamer woke up (without being dominated by any magic), but the adventurers, thinking it was hostile, attacked it as well, with Sarge killing him thanks to the magical boon of a sentient apple.
The Glorious Ones returned to Drobanagos with some crab meat that was very welcomed by the locals, who used it for several meals. However, during the festivities the adventurers realized that the Dreamer was in fact the protector and protagonist of the festival, and it became evident when the villagers started calling for it with their dance, to no avail. Although no one had yet made the connection between the absence of the large crab and the seafood menu, the Glorious Ones decided to board the next ship heading to Tal'Dorei to avoid trouble.

(Sx81) takes place in a time in Scanlan's life when he's still inexpert and lacks confidence, and by the end of it he's trying to behave more like the charismatic Ranthiel Volthor. Since between 795 and 796 PD Scanlan had a messy affair with a member of the Darrington Estate staff that forced the bard and his troupe to leave, presumably the gnome's time with the Glorious Ones preceded this incident in Deastok.
