"The Confounding Cavern" (RT2x06) is the eighteenth episode of The Re-Slayer's Take. As the Re-Slayers delve into the depths of Ügelberg, they encounter a familiar evil that entangles them in a bewildering and relentless challenge.
Synopsis[]
While Poogs tries to keep the Mega Magic Paladins safe and scare away the wind gibbons that plague Seedfeld, the other adventurers finish their rest in the entrance of the cave. Timpani uses sap, vines, and a Cure Wounds to attach Heera's broken horn, although warning her that it isn't a permanent fix; she is irritated, and declares she wants the creatures of the mountain to suffer like she has, and to cook and eat the specific cave fisher that made her fall. Farah suggests to return with Xella later to ask him for help, and the tiefling agrees, although she also notices her friend is very nervous for some reason. Since the cave is filled with yellow gas Frog wonders if she should go alone, but her friends reject the idea, so they end up going in together. After a bit they reappear in the entrance with a feeling of deja vu, and injuries of different sources: fall, poison, and darts made of condensed and calcified fungus (according to Frog's Identify). They use a rope to connect each other and after Timpani heals them all with Mass Cure Wounds, he, Farah, and Heera go inside again, with Frog and Norbert holding the rope inside; they notice how it moves and tenses in a specific pattern as their teammates move, and after some time Heera and Farah reappear, without Timpani.
Farah notices she wrote a message for herself in her own arm: "the door", and manages to remember a stone door with a frightening face of shining eyes resembling the Timberblight; they explain Norbert who Putridius is, and then start talking about how did the Slayer's Take and the Mega Magic Paladins survive the cave. Heera contacts Timpani through the magical earrings, and she hears his distressed voice before communication is cut. Meanwhile, Frog theorizes that the magic of that place might have affected the paladins, leaving their minds stuck in the routine of their days of glory. After talking for a bit about potential ways to move through the cave, Norbert agrees to lend the three adventurers three of the magic daggers (pink wing dagger for Frog, green nature dagger for Heera, and yellow lightning dagger for Farah), and he takes the red fire dagger for himself; by striking various poses they manage to activate their magical properties, and the barbarian admits he hadn't been able to use them before because he tried to use all at once.
After some preparation, the four of them enter the cave together, and manage to go through the stone door, reaching a new chamber without looking. When she realizes, Frog Identifies the door, revealing it has a teleportation trap that activates through sight. After they find some clues left behind by their missing friend, they keep walking until they find a chamber filled with necrotic spores and yellow gas that leaves the mountain through cracks; there is also a white portal through which Timpani comes out, followed by yellow gas that takes control of the skeleton of Ügle, that rises in a corner producing eerie sounds.
