Teven is a tall (six and a half or seven feet) devilish-looking male with deep red skin, yellow eyes, two massive horns, long dark grey hair like a lion's mane, a bushy beard, a tail, and leathery wings. His fingers are clawed and elongated, and his cloak was made of dark black and tattered velvet.[3][4] He wore a sheathed two-handed sword on his back.[5]

Personality[]

Teven is a stoic and professional individual, slightly dismissive of those he doesn't care about, but surprisingly charming when the situation calls for it, especially if it benefits his patron. He doesn't like being ordered around. He enjoys the rivalry between demons and devils, and is excited about the idea of facing powerful foes from the Abyss, even though he tries to hide it.

Biography[]

Teven is hundreds of years old, but young enough to consider figures like grand demons almost mythic.[1]

At some point before 843 PD he became one of the many champions of the Lord of the Nine Hells, doing his bidding as a disruptor, assassin, and scout for him, whatever necessary to complete his mission. Eventually he earned a title, "Retribution of the Hells".[6]

When the apogee solstice started, Asmodeus sensed that something dangerous for the gods was coming to Exandria, and he sent Teven Klask to the Material Plane with permission to deal with followers of the Prime Deities if necessary, with the ultimate goal of helping the Lord of the Hells and indirectly the rest of the gods. He visited the Grey Valley in Tal'Dorei, where a demon incursion had recently occurred, leaving the chaotic fiends controlling the Iridon Bastion and holding hostages while they prepared a celebratory feast. While the champion of the Nine Hells prepared to act, he encountered Bells Hells, a group of adventurers with whom he ended up collaborating in the fight against the demons. After they were victorious, Teven, impressed by Fearne Calloway, spoke with her to learn more about her goals and those of her friends, sharing information about his own mission, and left the druid with a way to magically contact him if she ever needed it and was interested in serving Asmodeus. She agreed, and they sealed that pact. After warning the adventurers of the imminent danger to the south and venturing that he would encounter it again, Teven teleported away in a gust of flame.[7]

Days later, when Fearne showed Teven's mark to Morrigan and described her encounter with the champion, the hag told her that it was indeed a promise, and that it granted an audience with Asmodeus himself.[8] During Bells Hells' visit to Ruidus Fearne considered calling upon the devil, and licked and talked to the mark on her finger without results.[9] However, when the party was exploring the ruins of Aeor and found signs of fiendish activity, Fearne, after a brief hesitation, talked to and kissed the mark, and after it erupted into flames, a portal opened and the devilish champion appeared, announcing that their pact had begun. They asked him about Dominox, and he described him as a grand demon believed lost during the Calamity. Laudna asked the champion if he would be willing to bring more allies for them, and he responded that the forces of the Nine Hells were busy preparing an attack against Ruidus, but that he would stay with them, since it aligned with his lord's interests; moreover, he seemed excited about the idea of facing a grand demon. After Chetney was tormented by Dominox-sent visions, Bells Hells asked Teven for advice, and he told them to do better than the demon's previous victims, causing Fearne to thank him sarcastically.[10] After Dorian and Imogen received more visions and the latter tried to convince the demon to speak with them directly, Laudna asked teven what would happen if they helped Dominox, making him touch his sword and declare that such a creature should be put down immediately, and that if he was really bound to the Pinion of Service they should leave him there, because if they somehow freed him and killed him, as a grand demon he would be able to return to the Material Plane from the Abyss very easily. The champion took a moment to speak to Fearne about their pact, telling her that she could now ask Asmodeus for help, but warning her by explaining that the Betrayer God didn't like to waste time, and that anything she asked him would require a price, and a part of her changing permanently; he also added that he was looking forward to her joining him in the Nine Hells.

They continued exploring the ruins, and eventually they found Braius Doomseed, a minotaur paladin wearing an armor with the symbol of the Lord of the Hells, but declaring he was a follower of Bahamut, trying to find and kill Ludinus. When Bells Hells accepted him as an ally, Teven warned him that he would kill him if he did anything against Fearne or himself, since the two of them were bound; that caused the faun to express some curiosity about that description of their relationship, and when the devil told her he was bound to many, she responded by saying that so was she. Although Braius was cleary starstruck and trusting around Teven, the moment he said he was a "herald champion" of his god the Retribution of the Hells, after smelling him for a moment, declared that was a lie. Later, when they found the engine room where Dominox was sealed, Teven was tense and ready to fight, and when they went inside and started negotiating the possibility of releasing the demon, he told them they shouldn't do it. When the grand demon lost his patience and attacked the group, Teven immediately went after him, flying and attacking with Divine Smite; Dominox tried to Banish him, but Laudna Counterspelled it, allowing the champion to stay in Exandria. Shortly after, however, when the warlock saw that Ludinus was approached and she told them to release the demon from the Pinion, Teven looked at Fearne, and angrily declared they wouldn't do such thing. He kept attacking Dominox, weakening him, and when Braius asked the chamoion to speak to Asmodeus about him, he to do it if he helped defeating the demon; the paladin, combining his Hammering Horns and his battering shield, pushed the enemy through a portal to the Abyss that Ludinus had created, allowing Teven to destroy him permanently, stabbing Dominox in the chest and then cutting him in half. After that Braius asked the Retribution of the Hells for an autograph, and the devil signed his armor, telling him that such items were rare. When Ludinus told Bells Hells he wanted to speak with them, Teven followed them, curious. They arrived to the Occultus Thalamus, where the archmage, after explaining some of his past witnessing the destruction caused by the gods, showed them what the device contained: the memories and history of Aeor and its destruction.[11] After that Ludinus spoke with Bells Hells trying to persuade them to join the Ruby Vanguard; even though the adventurers got different impressions from the recording and weren't entirely in agreement with the archmage, Teven, fearing a disadvantageous alliance in favor of Ludinus, tried to attack him, being Banished immediately.[12]

Fearne Calloway[]

Teven was impressed by Fearne after seeing her in combat (the feeling was mutual, though not for the same reasons), and deduced that she must be the leader of their adventuring party, mainly addressing her during their conversation, and feeling comfortable enough to share information about himself and extend an offer to help her in the future if she was willing to serve Asmodeus. According to him, Fearne is "outside the knotted weave".[13]

After their pact officially began Teven maintained his protective and slightly flirtatious attitude towards the faun, although also reminding her that she wasn't the only person bound to him.

Trivia[]

Teven Klask by Odd

  • His name could come from the Akkadian tibnu (straw). His surname means "slap" in Danish.
  • It is unclear what type of devil he is. By the description and his flight speed (60 feet) he is probably a cambion, although that and his seductive attitude could identify him as an incubus. For the combat in which he participated, Matt used the miniature of a cambion from Campaign Two, Obann, to represent him.[19]
  • He told Fearne that he was bound to many, not only to her. It is unclear if he meant exclusively infernal contracts, or also potential relationships (which was what the faun understood).[20]
  • He doesn't sign autographs very often, making items with his signature extremely rare.[21]
  • The cast has theorized that Teven might know Zerxus Ilerez.[22] Matthew Mercer confirmed that they likely know each other, but the former First Knight of Avalir stays shackled next to the Lord of the Hells.[23]
