Ted 2

Ted 2 is the spider familiar of Opal. As a companion, she is controlled by her summoner, Aimee Carrero, with assistance and communication from the Dungeon Master, Aabria Iyengar.

Appearance[]

While inactive, Ted 2 looks like a small spider earring dangling from Opal's left ear. When she comes to life she briefly glows with an opalescent glow before turning into a living dark colored spider.[4]

Personality[]

Ted 2 seems to be an obedient familiar, and particularly enthusiastic about fighting and killing, despite her tiny size.[5]

Background[]

Opal summoned her for the first time at some point of 843 PD between the moment she started wearing the Circlet of Barbed Vision and her visit to Kymal, once she gained access to the Find Familiar spell. Said entity took the form of a spider (likely due to Lolth's influence)[6][7] and the warlock started using her as an earring; she named her Ted 2 honoring her twin sister, even though the warlock patron wasn't too happy about it.[8]

"Exandria Unlimited: Kymal, Part 1" (E2x01)[]

When the Crown Keepers and Morrighan Ferus decided to do a heist to get money from The Maiden's Wish casino in Kymal, they decided to sneak into the penthouse of Phaedrov Krishtan (the nephew of the casino owner) to look for blueprints. Opal sent Ted 2 through the keyhole, and although the little spider didn't find those documents, she did alert Opal about some guards, being willing to attack them herself. When the adventurers started fighting their enemies the spider familiar stayed, biting some of them to distract them and help her allies. However, she was hit by Opal's Hunger of Hadar, and her physical form was destroyed.[9]

"Exandria Unlimited: Kymal, Part 2" (E2x02)[]

After a dream in which the Spider Queen tested her and made her her champion, Opal joined her team for the heist, and when she checked with the Betrayer God if she would help her during the mission, she agreed, and restored her "boon" by bringing Ted 2 back, first as a brooch and then as a earring again (this also led to a brief discussion about if the familiar was a new spider or the same one than before, with the goddess confirming that the tiny animal was still the same).[10] During the heist Ted 2 acted mostly as a scout, accompanying Fy'ra Rai and Morrighan at first, and later leaving a battle to go search the vault on her own. When the Crown Keepers arrived to the glass sky deck they were going to use to escape, Opal tried to send her familiar to keep watch, but the door was sealed so that not even a tiny spider could get through.

Weeks later, when Lolth took control over Opal and forced her to fight her friends, in order to cut their ties and claim her as a fully devoted champion, she sent Ted 2 into battle too, preparing the little spider to deliver spells if necessary.

Even though the warlock called her ugly when talking with Ted, and despite the fact that the familiar bit her once when she was summoned from her earring form, Opal and Ted 2 seemed to have a good and affectionate relationship with each other.[11]

Being a familiar, Ted 2 appears or disappears at Opal's whim as an action, or turns into an earring. She and the warlock share a mental connection through which the latter can issue commands, cast spells through Ted 2 or even transfer her senses to the spider, rendering her own body blind and deaf during that time.

Trivia[]

  • Although Opal can summon Ted 2 with her Find Familiar spell, that she has thanks to her Book of Ancient Secrets invocation, it seems like Lolth has particular influence over the familiar, either granting Opal the knowledge and power for the spell through the eldritch invocation or making Ted 2 more powerful than a normal familiar.[14][15]
    • In fact, Ted 2 seems to have some abilities that set her apart from other familiars, as she can camouflage herself as jewelry and communicate verbally through her telepathic connection with Opal.
