"Talks Machina #20: 'Bats Out of Hell'" (TMx20) is the twentieth episode of Talks Machina. Liam O'Brien, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham discuss "Bats Out of Hell" (1x93) with Brian Wayne Foster and special guest ND Stevenson.

Synopsis[]

  • Brian started growing a beard.
  • Q: Was this the most intense episode?[2]
  • Q: What is ND's expirience with DnD and how did she decied to play blood hunter?[3]
    • A: ND started his first campaign about a year ago playing a teenage tiefling warlock named Jericho with her companion pseudodragon. All players were teenagers in "Breakfast Club" style. However, they stopped playing because of the scheduling confilct.
    • A: ND played the warlock with 7 strength and twenty charisma and wanted to do the opposite with Tova, still possessing some spells. Matt recommended a blood hunter class. Jericho got only to the fifth level, which made his second character Tova with 14 levels a special experience.

  • Q: At Wondercon Liam said that Vax went to the Nine Hells for one last job. How does he feel barely getting through alive?[6]

    • Sam: There are businesses in hell. It was unexpectedly more civilized.
    • Liam: The anticipation was way worse than actual hell.
  • Vax was shoved into lava by Keyleth during their second battle royale. Keyleth fell face down into lava in Thordak's lair. Vax narrowly avoided lava trap in the Utugash's stronghold. They have complicated relationship with lava.
  • Q: What was the discusion beetween ND and Matt beforehand?[8]
    • A: They traded emails for about 8 months but had colliding schedules. At one point, ND insistently met Matt at lunch to plan his character, really wanting to play some DnD.

    • ND knew Tova was gonna be in Utugash's dungeon.

    • Matt created them. Two of the were left alive: Bellany[spelling?] who involved Tova into being a blood hunter and Kalin[spelling?] who sold his soul. Tova with friends traveled Nine Hells to save it. Tova need a solid indication of her usefulness to move forward in life, which is why she was glad to become a blood hunter and grateful to Bellany for helping her.
  • Q: [18] If there hadn't been such a rush to leave the Mentiri jail, would VM stayed and helped Tova find her friends?
  • Q: Was it hard for ND to role play Tova, when she surrounded by characters that are already well established?[19]
    • A: It was challenging: ND never played DnD at such high level and in front of the thousands of people, but, after his previous campaign fell apart, he missed DnD and was glad to play again.
  • Continuation of Jericho story: she has two moms. Her nemesis Lilly tried to seduce one or both of them. To keep her doing so, Jericho had to make out with her in front of them. Jericho also sold her soul to a devil to make her mother angry.
  • Q: What Vax and Grog think of Tary after his fights with a kraken and a pit fiend?[20]
  • Q: What event would give Tary PTSD?[21]
    • A: Probably the most traumatic one was shopping with Grog in Vasselheim and accidently being involved in the murder of two bastion guards.
  • Q: How was it for Tova to stick to her guns, staying in hell, and not geting a free ticket out?[22]
    • A: Searching for her friend was the main fuel that kept Tova's engines going. The second in line is the need to return the Ring of Invisibility to Vax.

  • Q: What went through your mind when Marisha made that death saving throw, saving her life and VM's single way to Plane Shift from hell?[24]

    • A: Grog is the one who name the white tiger. In the early pre-stream, they once successfully intimidated "a guy".
