The Stone of Nightsong is an elven relic that was used in the Shapers' War.
Description[]
Appearance[]
It is a black, perfectly spherical stone surrounded by a set of nightingale's wings.[1][2]
History[]
The artifact was created during the Shapers' War by a celestial servant of Sylandri, Shaper of the elves, after the destruction of the nightingale-formed angel who used to ferry the elven souls directly to the peaceful Garden of the Spirit, bypassing the Tenebral Reaches of the underworld. The stone was meant to fulfill the role of that fallen psychopomp even during the conflict between gods and mortalkind.[3]
Thjazi Fang and Thimble brought it back from their last adventure together. It was put in a glass case and stolen after Thimble was attacked in her hideout by several members of the Crow Keepers thieves' guild and a sorcerer in fine boots.[4] This attack was orchestrated by Casimir Gavendale, who was bribed by House Tachonis to betray Thjazi and Thimble and give the artifact to them.[5]
Vaelus showed up at Thjazi's funeral claiming he had stolen the stone from her. Bolaire Lathalia recognized the name of the item and much of its history.[6] Occtis Tachonis remembered reading about the item during his studies at the Penteveral.[7]
When Ethrand Tachonis attacked Palazzo Davinos with six ghouls under his command, he appeared with the Stone and with the intent of placing it inside his brother Occtis Tachonis.[8] Occtis was quickly overwhelmed in the attack, and Ethrand cut out his brother's heart and replaced it with the Stone.[9] Moments later, the song of a nightingale was audible to Vaelus and Thaisha Lloy,[10] while in a space between life and death Occtis could feel the presence of the stone as something that didn't actually belong to him, and tried to reject it. Later in the night, after his friends rescued his body and brought it to the Lloy estate, they managed to extract the artifact from inside him, and brought him back as a Hollow One; after that, both Murray and Vaelus realized that the Stone of Nightsong would have ended up destroyed without their intervention, and was now connected to Occtis, although without his existence being dependent of it.[11] After some debate, Vaelus, who had promised not to run away with it and had the trust of Lady Aranessa Royce, was allowed to carry the holy relic as the Seekers prepared to leave Dol-Makjar.[12]
Trivia[]
- Brennan Lee Mulligan described this artifact as "a rock made out of a dead angel", referring to the guardian celestial of nightingale wings who took care of the souls.[13]
