A staff of the adder is a staff that can be magically animated. Typically, a staff has one snake head,[2] but Fearne Calloway's staff has two.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The staff of the adder owned by Fearne Calloway is wooden and has various poisonous flowers growing from it. It has two green adder heads at its top and a hook from which a lantern hangs.[3]

Properties[]

An attuned cleric, druid, or warlock can use a bonus action to speak a command word and animate the snake head at the top of the staff for 1 minute, which can become inanimate again by using a bonus action to speak the command word again.[2] They can make a melee attack with the snake head, adding their proficiency modifier. On a hit, the target takes 1d6 piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 3d6 poison damage.[2]

The animated snake head has its own stats (AC 15 and 20 hit points) and can be attacked. If the head drops to 0 hit points, the staff is destroyed. The staff regains all hit points when it becomes inanimate, so long as it isn't destroyed.[2]

History[]

Fearne acquired the staff at some point prior to the events of "The Nameless Ones" (E1x01). She activated it but did not attack with it in the warehouse fight in Emon.[4] She did the same with the guards near the city gates,[5] in combat in the Rifenmist Jungle,[6] and again against Lord Eshteross.[7]

Fearne's dark future counterpart also had a staff of the adder and used it to attack Little Mister in the fight against the Crown Keepers.[8]
