The Staff of Dark Odyssey is a magical staff that grants the wielder a bonus to magic and allows the casting of certain spells.

Description[]

The staff is strongly magical, made of twisting dark wood and about two to three feet in length.[2] It appears that thorns once emerged from the wood it is crafted from, but they have been sanded down to nubs. A dull quartz crystal is embedded within its hand-like top, that grows increasingly clear in coloration as the charges of the staff are expended.[3]

It grants an attuned spellcaster a +1 bonus to an as-yet unspecified magical statistic, and allows the wielder to expend charges to cast from a list of spells.[4] It has eight charges. While holding it, the wielder can use an action to expend one or more of the following spells from it: Misty Step (1 charge),[5] Blink (2 charges),[6] Banishment (3 charges),[7] Passwall (4 charges),[8] Teleport (6 charges).[9] The staff regains 1d4+3 charges daily at dawn.[10] When expending charges from the staff, the wielder takes 1d4 damage per charge expended.[11]

If the last charge of the staff is expended, there is a small chance that it permanently disappears.[12]

History[]

The staff was found by the Wildemount half of Bells Hells in a Bag of Holding located in a hidden cubbyhole in the former study of Ludinus Da'leth in his Gildhollow Tower in the ruined city of Molaesmyr deep in the Savalirwood. Fresh Cut Grass cast Identify on it, and the party learned of its abilities. When deciding who should use it, Imogen Temult noted that she already knew some of the spells that the staff held, but she attuned to it in order to be able to Teleport the party back to Marquet.[13]

However, her first few attempts to Teleport were unsuccessful and Team Wildemount suffered damage and appeared in an unknown location near their starting point. After allowing the staff to recharge, Imogen successfully transported the group to Jrusar.[14]

Imogen later used the staff to transport the party to Zephrah, after which she gave it to Fresh Cut Grass, since he was tracking their then-target, Dancer. The aeormaton kept the staff and took it with them to Ruidus when Bells Hells went on a reconnaissance mission there, as a potential resource to return home when they were done. FCG, however, spent four charges casting Passwall in the first minutes after arriving on the red moon,[15] realizing soon after that Teleport was no longer available until the staff recharged.[16] FCG cast Passwall again while his team was on a detonation mission beneath Kreviris.[17] When Fresh Cut Grass detonated later that day to save their friends from Otohan Thull, the staff survived the damage and was recovered by Bells Hells.[18]

Imogen kept the staff, and two days later when Bells Hells and Essek Thelyss were trying to Teleport to Eiselcross, Essek spent all his magical resources trying to overcome the interference around the region. Imogen read his mind to get an image of their destination and used the staff to cast Teleport, transporting them to a snowy glade in an unidentified forest in the mountains, rather than their destination in Eiselcross.[19]

Later, the staff was given to Chetney, who used it to cast Blink on Imogen during the battle against Predathos when she was very close to unconsciousness, prioritizing her safety during the battle over having a magical way out of the Hallowed Cage later.[20]

Trivia[]

  • Sam stated that the staff has "four or five different spells it can do, but like three of them, Imogen can already do."[21]
  • Laura Bailey later confirmed that she rolled a 5 for her first attempt to use the staff to cast the Teleport spell, which caused damage to Team Wildemount.[22] Her next roll was a 4, causing them even more damage, then a 13, causing them to land in a "similar location".[23]
