Spenser Starke is a game designer, a producer with Critical Role Productions since 2021, and a screenwriter.

Critical Role productions[]

He was one of the lead game designers and writers for the Candela Obscura gaming system, along with Rowan Hall, and appeared as the Game Master for the second chapter of Candela Obscura, the Circle of Needle and Thread. He was once again the Game Master for "Candela Obscura Live - The Circle of the Silver Screen" (CO5x01), the first Candela Obscura live show at The United Theater on Broadway leading Marisha Ray, Laura Bailey, Khary Payton, and Matthew Mercer. He's the lead game designer of Darrington Press' TTRPG game Daggerheart. Spenser attended PAX Unplugged 2024 with Critical Role founders Matthew Mercer and Ashley Johnson, Daggerheart additional game designer Rowan Hall, as well as Daggerheart contributors Masood Haque and Dani Gage for a dedicated panel to showcase Darrington Press' newest game system, Daggerheart.[1][2][3]

Background[]

Spenser graduated from Chapman University in Orange, California in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts - Film Production.[4] He has stated, "I was a producer and writer in the film industry for a little bit, and always wanted to be able to tell stories with my friends in a way that was collaborative. That industry can be hard to get things made, so I ended up pulling in people that were my friends that were super talented writers and actors and producers and we just sat around a table and play and tell stories the way that we would if we were on set. So I came in that route from a cinematic angle and that led me into wanting to play and make games that felt cinematic in that same way."[5]

He designed the Ennie-award winning game "Alice is Missing", a Kickstarter-funded immersive silent RPG played entirely via text message, with the players taking the roles of friends and family of a missing teen. "Alice" has been optioned by Paramount Studios and is in development as a potential feature movie, to be co-written by Spenser and Becca Gleason.[6]

Spenser also designed the games Kids On Brooms and Icarus.
