Solar are angels of godlike power.[1]
Abilities[]
According to the Monster Manual, 5th Ed., solars are resistant to radiant damage as well as bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical weapons. They are immune to necrotic and poison damage, and immune to the charmed, exhaustion, frightened, and poisoned conditions. Solars also have magic resistance, granting advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.[1]
- Angelic Weapons: The solar's weapon attacks are magical. When the solar hits with any weapon, the weapon deals an extra 6d8 radiant damage (included in the attack).
- Divine Awareness: Knows when it hears a lie.
- Innate Spellcasting: Can cast the following without using components. Charisma based (save DC 25)
- At will: Detect Evil and Good, Invisibility (self only)
- 3/day each: Blade Barrier, Dispel Evil and Good, Resurrection
- 1/day each: Commune, Control Weather
- Angelic Weapons: Weapon attacks deal extra 6d8 radiant damage (Charisma save DC 25).
- Healing Touch (4/day): heals some damage and cures any disease, poison, blindness, deafness, or curse.
- Slaying Longbow has +13 to hit, range 120/600 ft., 2d8 + 6 piercing damage plus 6d8 radiant damage. If the target is a creature that has 190 hit points or fewer, it must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or die.
- Flying greatsword
Legendary actions (3/per round):
- Teleport: The solar magically teleports, along with any equipment it is wearing or carrying, up to 120 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.
- Searing Burst (costs 2 actions): Each creature of its choice in a 10-foot radius must make a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw, taking 4d6 fire damage plus 4d6 radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Blinding Gaze (costs 3 actions): The solar targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. If the target can see it, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until magic such as the Lesser Restoration spell removes the blindness.
History[]
On the eve of the Calamity, Cerrit Agrupnin went to investigate Vespin Chloras's chambers after hearing alarming murmurs about the mage's experiments. On the scene, Cerrit found a narrowly visible summoning circle created to bind a being of such power that it could escape the trap with ease. Here Cerrit also noticed a rusted part of mundane looking bow,[2] later identified as the bow of a solar. The full bow had been 12 feet in length and made out extraplanar gold, and it had held a powerful enchantment, which must have been removed by an indescribably mighty creature.[3]
During the Calamity, the solar Xalicas, the right hand of Corellon, was injured so badly she lost her ability to fly, see, or leave the Material Plane, and even the gods could not restore her. It took her over a hundred years to recover enough power to move again. She now wanders Wildemount, lending her power to those who will help her prevent destructive conflicts.[4]
Trivia[]
- The angels fighting for the Exandrian Accord were described having golden and blue skin.[5] Although angels serving different deities can have different appearances, the golden skin is a trait mostly associated with solars.
- One of these golden-skinned angels, hooded and with a 40-foot wingspan, might have been a solar of the Raven Queen, since he addressed the Champion of Ravens as soon as he was released, hurrying him to join them in the next part of the conflict against Predathos.[6]
- Outside of Critical Role canon it is believed that solars are so powerful that there can only be 24 of them, although depending on the edition and the source this can be interpreted as a literal fact, or a more vague number that could act as a minimum value.[1]
