"Siege and Silence" (LVM3x08) is the eighth episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, Season Three. After a devastating loss, Vox Machina must take the fight to Thordak with one less memeber. They travel across Exandria recruiting allies to face down the Cinder King in his lair. Will the gathered might of the world be enough? Or will Thordak turn Tal'Dorei to ash?
Plot summary[]
In a flashback, Vox Machina is breaking into a prison to free one of the prisoners there for a cash reward. The only remaining prisoner tells them the person they're looking for died two days earlier, but Vex'ahlia notices Percival's posh accent and asks if they would be rewarded for freeing him. Percy is honest: he's flat broke and alone in the world. Vex admires his honesty and the group frees him anyway.
In the present, in Whitestone, Keeper Yennen is conducting a funeral for Percival attended by the entire town. That evening, Pike, Grog, Keyleth, and Vax are mourning together when Scanlan arrives, breathless, and learns of the death.
Meanwhile, Vex'ahlia is sobbing at Percy's grave, remembering his declaration of love for her. Vax finds her there, and she tells him she couldn't say it; she wasn't strong enough. She believes her love ruins everything it touches, and Percy died never knowing how she felt. Vax reassures her that he did, but she is unconsoled.
That night, Vax knocks on Keyleth's door, and she invites him in. He apologizes for running away from a relationship with her, and she assures him it's okay to be scared. They admit to each other they don't want to be alone tonight, and Keyleth kisses him.
Scanlan and Pike visit Percy's grave. Scanlan feels immense guilt over not having been there when he was killed, but Pike assures him it wasn't his fault. When he leaves, she finds music left there titled, "Kaylie's Song".
Keyleth and Vax are asleep together when Vax wakes to a sudden horrific vision of the Matron of Ravens. He quietly leaves the room, encountering Raishan (in human form) in the hallway. She still wants to work together against Thordak, and tells Vax there is something he needs to know about his family's past and the red dragon. A little later, Vax joins Vex in her room and finds her packing. He shares with her what Raishan told him: that Thordak was the dragon that destroyed their home town of Byroden and killed their mother Elaina. They may be able to avenge both deaths.
The next day, they hold a council, where Keyleth now is in favor of working with Raishan. Grog suggests that this time, they bring an army: the friends they've made along the way, such as the Ashari, Zahra and Kashaw, and Earthbreaker Groon, but Allura fears it would still not be enough. Vax and Vex suggest 1000 Syngorn soldiers, and everyone leaves to gather the forces. Vex travels to see the twins' father Syldor, who at first insists the Syngorn armies must stay to defend the city. She tells him that they have learned Thordak killed their mother, and that the twins and Syldor both believed that Elaina would not have been there to be killed if it weren't for their existence. Syldor always told them to guard their hearts, and Vex believes she knows why: He was too proud to admit he loved Elaina. She begs him if he has any love left for her or for her mother, march to Emon and prove it.
That evening, Vax tells Keyleth that Zahra and Kash declined their invitation. Scanlan overhears Pike humming "Kaylie's Song" and tells her he has tried being a father and a member of the group, and failed at both. Just then, the massive Syngornian army arrives.
Later, they plan the assault: Syngorn, Groon, the Ashari, and Whitestone will engage the dragon spawn while Vox Machina uses the distraction to reach Thordak's lair. Raishan interrupts to explain that plan won't work, as the spawn now guard the lair. Vax'ildan tells his father this is an informant named Larkin, and the disguised dragon reveals a small unprotected back entrance to the lair.
As the battle begins, the ground forces at first meet no resistance entering the city, which is filled with smoke. They finally find the wyrmlings, but they do not attack and the earth begins rumbling. Meanwhile, Vox Machina finds the back entrance Raishan spoke of -- it has been recently sealed shut by Thordak. As Grog attempts to punch through it with the Titanstone Knuckles, the rumbling begins and they realize Raishan has betrayed them. Their friends are in danger. Within the remains of the city, Thordak bursts out of the ground with a roar, consuming the attacking troops in a conflagration of death from his fiery breath.
