Sending is a third-level evocation spell allowing the caster to exchange brief messages with another creature across great distances.
Description[]
Sending requires one action to cast, and has verbal, somatic, and material components (a short piece of copper wire). Sending allows the caster to send a short message of up to twenty-five words to a familiar creature. The target hears the message in its mind, recognizes the sender if they know them, and can answer immediately. Creatures must have an Intelligence score of at least one to understand the meaning of the message. Messages can be Sent across any distance, but if the recipient is on another Plane of Existence, there is a five percent chance of failure.[1][2] Contacting someone on another plane in this way feels like it meets with some resistance, and if there's a return message, it comes with some momentum.[13]
In "What Dreams May Come" (3x34), Imogen Temult was able to use Sending to contact and receive a response from Delilah Briarwood, who is presumed dead. Matthew Mercer has in the past said he would allow the spell to be cast to speak to the dead, "but you probably won’t get a response, nor know if they heard."[14]
During one casting of Sending, it was noted that the message traveled along the ley lines to reach its intended recipient.[15] During an apogee solstice, when the ley lines were heavily disrupted, several attempts to use the spell were foiled and even drew damaging psychic feedback.[16][17]
