Sarenne de Chastain is a werewolf and a member of the Claret Orders.[1]

Description[]

Appearance[]

Sarenne is a pale woman, "white as a snowdrop", with braided ivory hair, sharp and severe features and hunting black eyes. According to Lucien Tavelle, she had a smooth and beautiful face,[2] but her pointy ears were her only delicate feature. She wore a black leather cuirass.[3]

Personality[]

Sarenne is a strict, professional and highly disciplined woman, with an inflexible and intimidating character. She has very good insight,[4] and very little patience for imbeciles.[5]

Biography[]

Sarenne joined the Claret Orders at some point in her life, eventually becoming a fearsome blood hunter. As a werewolf, she stayed in the Cyrengreen Forest, with the Order of the Lycan,[6] and it was said that the first time she transformed into her wolf form, nine men were needed in order to subdue her, and most of them were injured in the process.[7] At some point in her career she met Vess DeRogna, an archmage of the Cerberus Assembly.[8]

As of 829 PD Sarenne was visiting the Oltu Ruins, and had contact with Elias de Corvo, another blood hunter and respected figure of the order. She dispersed Zoran Kluthidol, Tyffial Wase and Briyakar Jurrell when they tried to present complaints about the operation of the Claret Orders.[9]

By then, Lucien Tavelle had already joined the organization, and he and Sarenne shared a mutual dislike for each other;[10] however, when the tiefling's friend, Cree Deeproots, got her first contract, Sarenne was sent with them. The mission was to kill the hollower Azrahari (with whom Lucien shared a traumatic past) in the Savalirwood, and the tiefling convinced his cleric friend to give the contract to him, so he could kill the witch himself.[11] Sarenne wasn't aware of this agreement between Lucien and Cree, and when she discovered it, after Lucien killed their target, she scolded the young blood hunter, reminding him that he wasn't as special as he himself believed, and that he couldn't change if he didn't accept some tutelage and become more humble, which the tiefling refused. After that Sarenne made one more comment about it, asking Lucien if taking revenge on Azrahari felt empty; Despite being true, the young blood hunter lied, stating that he felt wonderful.[12]

After that Sarenne remained vigilant, constantly keeping an eye on Lucien, to the point where, by 831 PD, he considered her a killjoy, and one of the reasons he had grown bored with the Claret Orders.[13]

Trivia[]

  • Her name seems to be a variation of Sarina, which comes from the Hebrew name Sarah, which can be translated as "princess", "noblewoman" or "female chief". Her surname is made up of two elements: de is a French or Spanish preposition meaning "of"; Chastain, on the other hand, comes from the Old French castan or chastaigne, meaning "chestnut".
  • She is described as a human, but she also has "half-elven ears".[14]
  • Her weapon of choice is an enameled rapier, with a basket hilt chased in red stones.[15]
  • She and Vess DeRogna are the only two people able to make Brevyn Oakbender uneasy.[16]
