Sahuagin, called "sea devils" by sailors, are shark-like humanoids living in swamp dens, ruins, and coastal areas.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Sahuagin are humanoids with sharp teeth, flat noses, webbed fingers and toes, and spiny fish-like fins on their forearms, heads, backs, and tails.[9] They have slick, rubbery skin[10] in various shades, including green and blue-green. Sahuagin are prone to mutation, and the leaders of their communities, called barons, tower over the others and grow a second pair of arms.[1]

Abilities[]

The following abilities of all adult sahuagin, as in the Monster Manual[1] and the Ghosts of Saltmarsh adventure module,[11] are confirmed as abilities of the special sahuagin in Explorer's Guide to Wildemount:[4]

  • Blood Frenzy: Sahuagin have advantage on melee attack rolls against creatures who don't have all their hit points.
  • Limited Amphibiousness: Sahuagin can breathe air and water, but they must submerge themselves in water every four hours or start suffocating.
  • Shark Telepathy: Sahuagin can magically command any shark within 120 feet.

Society[]

Tal'Dorei[]

Sahuagin tend to live in small, leaderless pods, but pods occasionally band together into larger, majoritarian schools to accomplish larger goals. Some schools engage in mercenary work for other races like humans. Rarely, a sahuagin is strong enough to dominate multiple schools, which is when schools tend to become known for the plundering they do to sate their leader's demands for treasure.[12]

A group of sahuagin in the K'Tawl Swamp called the Ghormauth are seen worshiping Hoarmorath, a god with a sahuagin-like upper body, but with horns on its head and with tentacles instead of legs.[13] Some sahuagin organize into larger societies around the worship of alien gods.[12]

Wildemount[]

There are countless small communities of sahuagin in the Lucidian Ocean along the Menagerie Coast.[4] An untrained militia mostly composed of shark hunters protects Palma Flora from sahuagin, including the small clan in the nearby Sharkfeather Abyss that has been at odds with the village for generations.[14]

The influence of the leviathan Uk'otoa has changed the social dynamics of some of the sahuagin of that region: he calls out to the most ambitious and bloody-minded sahuagin in their dreams, offering them power. The magic items and innate spellcasting he grants help to draw other sahuagin to their cause (which is often bringing down the Clovis Concord), but these warlocks eventually become little more than puppets for their master.[4]

History[]

Sahuagin are rumored to have originated from a bottomless ocean pit.[12]

As of 812 PD, one school of sahuagin controlled the shores of the K'Tawl Swamp.[6] It was there that members of Vox Machina, in their earliest adventures a few years earlier, encountered a number of these sahuagin, who had built a temple to their god.[15]

On the opposite end of Tal'Dorei, a fisherman's guild in Emon called the Everline was making secret alliances with nearby sahuagin, likely as part of its feud with the Onyx Banner, a shipping guild.[7]

In the adventure Tide of Retribution from the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount sourcebook, set around late 835 or early 836 PD, the Sharkfeather clan of sahuagin attack Palma Flora with the aid of a warlock empowered by Uk'otoa.[16]

Known sahuagin[]

  • Selachai, a warlock of Uk'otoa leading the small Sharkfeather clan against the shark-hunters of Palma Flora who killed her parents[10]
