A ruidium weapon is any weapon infused with ruidium, which thereby conveys a variety of magic benefits but also the risk of ruidium corruption.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Ruidium appears as a slick, oily, crystalline mineral with blood-red streaks or veins.[6] As it spreads, it penetrates and bonds with everything it touches[7] for a prolonged time, including both the organic and inorganic[8] parts of weapons. One ruidium greataxe, known for a time as the Key to the Netherdeep, had ruidium veins arcing across its blade.[9]

Properties[]

Those who attune to a ruidium weapon gain the abilities to breathe underwater and to swim as fast as they can walk. When they hit with an attack using the weapon, it deals extra psychic damage. However, if their attack roll is a natural 1, they must succeed at a DC 20 Charisma saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion and, if they are not already suffering from ruidium corruption, they become corrupted.[10]

Touching the edge of a ruidium weapon to the pulsating dome in Cael Morrow will force open the rift to the Netherdeep for one hour.[11] Carrying a ruidium weapon protects the wielder from the crushing pressure in the Netherdeep.[12]

If all the world's ruidium is destroyed due to the death or redemption of the Apotheon, the weapon becomes a +2 weapon.[10]

History[]

Ruidium weapons were created by the spread of ruidium through the Netherdeep and into Cael Morrow, where ancient weapons remained.

In the adventure module Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep, set around or shortly after 836 PD, three factions in Ank'Harel end up seeking ruidium weapons for related but competing reasons. All become aware that a ruidium weapon—their initial focus is on a ruidium greataxe—can be used to open the rift to the Netherdeep. The Consortium of the Vermilion Dream, the Allegiance of Allsight, and the Cobalt Soul all have goals that require access to the Netherdeep.[13] Old Man Kruuk, a fence for stolen goods, has acquired a ruidium shortsword;[5] an aboleth warped by ruidium in Cael Morrow also has a ruidium shortsword in its hoard.[2] And a death embrace has the Key to the Netherdeep embedded in it.[14] Once in the Netherdeep, one can find a ruidium greatsword in a scalding pit[15] and yet another ruidium shortsword among the skeletons of soldiers who fell in the Calamity.[16]
