The Replenishment refers to the return of the flying city of Avalir to its terrestrial sister city Cathmoíra on the continent of Domunas every seven years. The event was marked with festivities, fireworks, a Parade of Beasts, and special sales in shops.[1]
Its deeper significance, however, was that it was part of an agreement reached with the Gau Drashari many years earlier. The ancient Gau Drashari druidic settlement of Toramunda was located on and around the brumestone-filled Mount Ygora, a place holy to the druids because it was legendarily the location where the Dawnfather and the Wildmother defeated two of the greatest primordials of the continent of Domunas during the Schism. It was permeated with elemental magic, tended to by the druids, which also attracted wizards to the area. Archmage Imyr Por'co had the idea to separate the top half of the mountain into a flying city, and in reparation to the druids, agreed to The Replenishment, whereby Avalir returns every seven years to return its accumulated magical Ether into the earth to replenish its magic.[2] Although the archmages of Avalir present the Replenishment as an act of charity, it is actually an obligation to the druids of Toramunda, known as the Drashari Pact or the Pact of Crown and Throne. The city is obligated to return 25% of its accumulated ether to the land around Toramunda, and that amount is stored in the Arboreal Calix as the city travels the ley lines of Exandria[3]
In the year following a Replenishment, crops explode throughout the land, and often, a generation of magical children will be born and there will be a revitalizing.[4]
Before the final Replenishment that is the setting of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, more ether than usual had been collected by the city, which was being secretly stored in auxiliary batteries by Laerryn Coramar-Seelie in preparation for her experiments in plane-shifting.[5] Word of this had leaked, however, and Nydas Okiro was approached about clandestinely selling some of the excess.[6]
Loquatius Seelie noted in a broadcast the day before the final Replenishment that there was always some turbulence in the city's descent.[7]
Behind the scenes[]
Brennan Lee Mulligan clarified that the Drashari tithe was 25% of the city's ether. The other 75% was supposed to get put into the ground for the Replenishment, but that hadn't been happening for many Replenishments in a row. Less than 5% of the city's ether was actually going to go into the ground for Domunas during the upcoming Replenishment; the rest had been siphoned off not only by the Astral Leywright, but also to various archmages in the city for purposes such as the unnatural extension of their lives. Nydas Okiro was involved in this ether trade to push the Leywright along and to bribe people.[8]
