Relvin Temult is the father of Imogen Temult and former husband of Liliana Temult. As an NPC, Relvin is played by Matthew Mercer.
Description[]
When Bells Hells encountered him in 843 PD, Relvin was in his mid to late 40s, with dirty blond hair pushed to one side and a scraggly beard, and was "handsome in a rugged sort of way." He was wearing a simple button-up shirt with the sleeves pushed above his elbows.[1]
Biography[]
Background[]
Relvin lived with his wife and daughter in the Dureni Fields near Gelvaan. At some point in Imogen's early childhood, Liliana left, leaving him to raise Imogen alone, and he led Imogen to believe that she had died. After Imogen developed her psychic powers, he distanced himself from her and eventually from the rest of town as well due to their rumors.[2]
Relvin described Liliana as sweet, smart, and strong-willed, which is why he liked her. He'd suspected she'd eventually realize she didn't belong in Gelvaan, but hoped when she left, they'd go together.[3]
"An Exit Most Fraught" (3x48)[]
Relvin met with Imogen when she visited Gelvaan with Bells Hells, and agreed to tell her about her mother, saying he'd known this day was coming since she'd left. He said he hadn't told her Liliana was still alive because he thought it was easier than her knowing the truth. He suspected Liliana had concealed her powers from him but that she'd always had them, and that she left because the mystery of her gift was stronger than the life they'd begun to build together. A year or two after Imogen's birth, Liliana began having dreams and said she was afraid Imogen would follow in her footsteps. When she left, Relvin was angry and admitted he was still angry, but hoped she had done it to protect their daughter. After about ten years, he stopped hoping she'd return. Liliana had been gone almost twenty years, with no word.
Fearne asked if he had anything belonging to her, and he gave Imogen a silver chain with an oval locket impressed with a child's fingerprint and the inscription "The better halves become a better whole." Relvin warned Imogen not to get herself into the same trouble as her mother, and told her she should leave town soon since her prior farewell had not been forgotten and the tales had grown with retelling. She telepathically told him, "I never want you to be afraid of me, Daddy." Relvin wished her luck, patted her shoulder, and started to ask her to tell Liliana something, but stopped himself, went inside his home, and closed the door.
"In the Shadow of War" (3x110)[]
Weeks later, before a mission, Imogen cast Sending to speak with her father, and he told her that he was thinking a lot about her, that hoped she was happy wherever she was, since she had always been a wandering spirit, and added that the horses missed her as much as he did.[4]
"A New Age Begins" (3x121)[]
When Imogen talked to her mother while Liliana was recovering from having most of her essence absorbed by Ludinus Da'leth, she encouraged her to return to Gelvaan and see Relvin, saying that she owed him that much. Liliana was hesitant but agreed in principle.[5] She and Relvin remained friends, although she kept traveling.[6]
Relationships[]
Imogen Temult[]
Relvin and his daughter were close once, but he withdrew from her after she developed her psychic abilities, as she was more comfortable that way. She speculated that part of the reason he started avoiding her was so he wouldn't accidentally reveal something about her mother,[7] a subject he had always avoided.[8] Imogen believed that her father was probably better off and happier without her home, and that her leaving was inevitable.[9] She also believed that he wouldn't welcome her return, as he didn't like having his thoughts read.[10]
When they actually encountered one another, the relationship was awkward and strained, but Relvin apparently told Imogen the truth about her mother as he understood it, and gave Imogen an inscribed silver locket that had once belonged to her mother, with Imogen's fingerprint and the words, "The better halves become a better whole." He wished her luck before awkwardly patting her and disappearing into their home.[11] In time, he and Liliana reconciled and became friends,[12] which Laudna suggested might improve Relvin's relationship with his daughter a bit (since her looking like her mother would be less painful).[13]
Liliana Temult[]
Relvin described Liliana as sweet, smart, and strong-willed, which is why he liked her. He'd suspected she'd eventually realize she didn't belong in Gelvaan, but hoped when she left, they'd go together.[14] They married and had a child (Imogen Temult) together in about 815 PD, but their relationship fell apart soon after when Liliana felt compelled to leave to pursue the source of the threats she was experiencing in her dreams toward both herself and her daughter.[15] Subsequently, Relvin refuse to speak of her, admitting later that he thought letting Imogen think her mother was dead was easier than telling her the truth.[16] After about ten years he stopped hoping for her return,[17] although he didn't remarry.
When Imogen talked to her mother while Liliana was recovering from having most of her essence absorbed by Ludinus Da'leth, she encouraged her to return to Gelvaan and see Relvin, saying that she owed him that much. Liliana was hesitant but agreed in principle.[18] She and Relvin remained friends, although she kept traveling.[19]
