Quyen Tran is a cinematographer and the wife of Critical Role cast member Sam Riegel. She is a member of The American Society of Cinematographers and has photographed projects around the globe, including New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Canada, Thailand, Japan, China, Russia, Italy and Vietnam,[2] and has worked on television shows, feature films, and short films.

She is one of the cofounders of "Doughrectors of Photography", a Los Angeles-based charitable organization that grew from her passion for sourdough bread baking during the COVID-19 pandemic, where in exchange for a donation to the LA Food Bank or other charity, patrons received baked goods. The group has generated the money for more than 140,000 meals for the LA Food Bank and has contributed to Vote Save America, Black Lives Matter and Stop AAPI Hate causes.[3]

Background[]

Quyen's parents were refugees from the Vietnamese war who fled to the United States in the 1970's, and she is bilingual in Vietnamese and English. She was born in Fairfax, Virginia, and as a teen aspired to be a spy for the CIA. She attended the University of Virginia where she majored in accounting and met Sam Riegel through their mutual interest in a cappella singing.[4]

She and Sam lived very near to the World Trade Center in New York City during the 9/11 attacks and those events led her to the decision to attend film school in Los Angeles and become a cinematographer.[4]

Critical Role Productions[]

Quyen was a guest on the second season of Between the Sheets, where she discussed her background, her relationship with the cast of Critical Role, and her philosophy of cinematography.

She also, with her husband Sam Riegel, wrote the Foreword to Exquisite Exandria: The Official Cookbook of Critical Role.

Other works[]

Quyen Tran is perhaps best known for her cinematography in Ahsoka, Palm Springs, Maid, and Unbelievable. For a complete list of her credits, see Quyen's IMDb PAGE.

Trivia[]

  • Although she doesn't follow Campaign Three actively, she attended the live show of "The Nox Engine" (3x98) and stayed even after Sam's new character's introduction. By the end, she was very impressed by the story, and for a week or so she followed the reactions and comments of the critters in social media, sharing them with her husband.[5]
