Pymon firebugs are small insects that glow and can increase their body temperature, potentially burning surrounding people and objects. Their main diet consists of wood and sugar.[2]

Description[]

Each pymon firebug is a coin-sized beetle. Under normal circumstances their bodies are warm and emit light, but when they become aggressive their temperature rises dangerously and can cause burns or fires, especially if they swarm.[3]

History[]

At some point before 843 PD, the D&O Toy Emporium in Uthodurn started selling enchanted whizzle-cages that contained pymon firebugs and worked as a nightlight for children. However, during the apogee solstice, due to the spell-based mechanism that kept the insects trapped, the firebugs in the store were released, causing the ambient temperature to rise dangerously when they gathered in several swarms of hundreds of specimens. An orc mercenary was hired to clear them out, but he left hurriedly after being burned. Shortly afterwards, when half of Bells Hells plus Deanna Leimert and F.R.I.D.A. passed near the toy store, Oltgar Dradegon and Drixlitch Ovana (the co-owners of the shop) hired the party to deal with the firebugs as well as a pet craskkalid inside.[4]

The adventurers entered the store, and using Deanna's innate talent for communicating with small creatures plus an offering of pancakes and syrup, attempted to catch the firebugs without harming them,[5] but they became agitated when a failed Air Bubble around them popped, so the party ended up fighting them. During the battle the main focus of Bells Hells was to trap the insects, but due to their dangerous nature they were forced to attack and kill several of the swarms, while Deanna kept communicating with them, trying to convince them to stop fighting the people there.[6]

The increase in temperature in the store from the firebugs also caused the larva of a craskkalid that Drixlitch kept as a pet to metamorphose and reach its dangerous adult form.[7]

  • Flight
  • Swarm

Trivia[]

  • Firebugs are a type of insect in the real world, bearing that name due to their coloration, but the more appropriate comparison is to fireflies, which emit light and are sometimes trapped in transparent containers like glass jars.
    • Imogen Temult collected firebugs (probably the common variant) when she was a child.[8]
