Prism Grimpoppy is a shadar-kai wizard originally from the Shadow Realm and an apprentice mage with the Cobalt Soul. She is played by Emily Axford.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Prism is a goth-looking elf with pointed teeth and ears. She has tattooed runes on her arms and a raven rides on her shoulder. When encountered by the Issylra half of Bells Hells, she was dressed in formal mage apprentice attire, including an academic beret, a short blazer with long sleeves, torn silk stockings, and lightweight mage booties. She carries a sentient spellbook.[5] Despite her lack of strength, Prism has defined abs and glutes from training on the Cobalt Soul.[6]
Personality[]
Prism was described as intense, and focused on her assignment from the Cobalt Soul, being very excited about her work for the organization and her own magical education, but also somewhat resentful about not being appreciated and having to make too much effort for her powers. She had "total indoor kid vibes",[7] being too innocent in certain situations due to a lack of social experience. She is very curious, being willing to ask questions, make deals, and experiment with her magic if she believes she can learn something new.[8] She likes bad puns.[9][10]
Prism saw her invitation to train at the Cobalt Soul as an opportunity not only to escape the gloom and misery of the Shadow Realm and chase something more for herself, but also to possibly do something for the Shadow Realm as well.[11]
Biography[]
Background[]
Prism was originally from Obleris,[12] in the Shadowfell, living there with her parents. During her childhood she didn't like her home plane, and dreamed of reproducing the Raven Queen's ascension ritual for everyone to use, believing that if there were no more deaths, it would somehow improve the nature of the Shadow Realm. However, as she grew older, she learned more about the subject and discarded this childish idea.[13]
At some point in or soon before 833 PD, a mage from the Cobalt Soul visited and she made herself so indispensable to him that when he left, he invited her to the Cobalt Soul in Exandria[14] as an apprentice mage. She immediately accepted, informing her mother through a letter.[15] Prism studied magic in Emon for ten years, but failed to be promoted.[16] During this period she managed to successfully steal four spell scrolls from the restricted section of the library.[17] She stated that she had never cast a spell without her teachers Counterspelling it for improper form before meeting her fellow adventurers in Issylra.[18]
Until the Apogee Solstice of 843 PD she was mostly performing low-level menial tasks (like cleaning quills, or emptying the chamber pots of more important mages), but due to their concern over the upcoming cataclysm, the Cobalt Soul pressed every available apprentice into service, and Prism was given the task of gathering information about people's experiences during the solstice.[19] The plan was that she would be transported to a city near one of the leyline nexuses, but instead she found herself suddenly in the middle of a forest in southern Issylra with her sentient book chaperone, Dynios.[20]
"Somewhere Out There" (3x59)[]
Prism encountered Laudna, Orym, Ashton, Bor'Dor and "Mona" in the middle of the forest, next to a bonfire and a cart, and she immediately tried to complete her assigned survey by asking them about their experiences during the solstice. During that conversation she accidentally made Mona reveal her real name, Deni$e, and she got the group to introduce themselves and tell an interesting fact about each of them.
While the six of them were speaking, three plant monsters appeared and attacked. Prism cast Greater Invisibility on herself and prepared Dynios, her sentient spellbook, in order to be able to cast spells through him, managing to kill one shambling mound with her Steel Wind Strike, and later using the book to Dimension Door Orym out of the other mound; she also sent Mother, her raven, to assist Deni$e.
After the battle (which the wizard found exciting) the group prepared for the night, and using Bor'Dor's first bonfire and two corpses Ashton had in their portable hole, Prism created an alarm system, casting Magic Mouth so that the corpses would speak if someone got too close to that area. During her night watch with Bor'Dor they both bonded over their lack of experience in battle or interaction with the world. In the morning, since the half-elf's reindeer, Ratchet, had left, the wizard tried to summon a Phantom Steed, but Bor'Dor brushed the matter off.
"Faith or Famine" (3x60)[]
While Bells Hells were following the Outerwalk Road Prism offered to combine her Floating Disk spell with the portable hole to make traveling more comfortable, although they discovered the hole was too big for the disk. When they found an abandoned gallows, both her and Laudna sent their familiars to inspect it, and later, when noticing the intensity of the magic around them, Prism checked by casting Minor Illusion, creating a surprisingly clear image of the Matron of Ravens. When the group arrived to Hearthdell the elf was particularly interested in finding a spellcaster that could give her access to the Scrying spell, and after learning about the Sunrise Sanctuary (a temple dedicated to Pelor) she wondered if the clerics would help her with that. When the party went to the Innovar Apothecary, Prism used her Illusory Script so the owner, Proleff, who was very worried about the guards listening to them, could be less stressed while talking to the adventurers.
When they met Elder Joan Abaddina Dynios, at Prism's request, assured the half-giant that the adventurers were who they claimed to be. She was willing to help the local elder in exchange for letting them use her scrying well (the elf was pretty sure that said object was functional), and she attended with her friends (although covered by her Invisibility spell) a meeting at the Fairfroth Brewery, where the villagers were planning how to drive out the followers of the Dawnfather who were occupying Hearthdell. It was decided that Orym and Bor'Dor would try to gain the trust of the bastions to send them to Marquet to face Ludinus instead of oppressing the villagers; while that was happening Prism cast False Life on herself and wondered which spells should she use, realizing that she lacked all the components for Summon Greater Demon, the one she wanted to use as a distraction. When things turned sour for the two diplomats on the team, Orym gave the warning, and the rest of Bells Hells and the villagers attacked the Sunrise Sanctuary, and Prism and Deni$e sneaked inside via Dimension Door.
"Crisis of Faith" (3x61)[]
During the battle Prism attacked Flameguide Kiro to make her lose the concentration of her Hold Person spell and free Orym and Ashton; the wizard also cast a force Fireball against her enemies, moving away using her natural teleporting abilities, and flirting with the guards to confuse them. Later, when Bor'Dor managed to kill Kiro, Prism sent Mother to collect a vial of her blood, and using it (and praying briefly to the Raven Queen, the goddess connected to blood magic), she cast Summon Greater Demon, bringing a barlgura in time to face the Dawnborn Angel that had been summoned with Flameguide's dying prayer (and earning Dynios's praise for it). The wizard Counterspelled the angel's Branding Smite, attacked him with Steel Wind Strike, and encouraged her demon to fight; it, in fact, managed to kill a Judicator with the help of Laudna's Hound of Ill Omen, and then managed to immobilize the angel and knock it to the ground, allowing Bor'Dor to kill him with Inflict Wounds. Once the battle was over the Earth Guardian summoned by Elder Abaddina grabbed the shadow elf's barlgura and both creatures disappeared, abandoning the Material Plane.
Before the Sunrise Sanctuary was destroyed and claimed by the Demithore Eidolons, Prism took the opportunity to take documents that had been kept in the building, and copied the runes from the fallen Judicator's tattoos to better understand them. Later, as she was about to gleefully toss the money they had found in the temple, Ashton advised her against doing so to avoid a stampede, instead leaving the task of distributing those riches to Proleff. When Bells Hells returned with Elder Abaddina to her cottage, they spoke for a bit about religion, spirituality, and how it all connected to Predathos and the elemental eidolons; Prism showed academic interest in better understanding all this, although when she discovered that Orym had been widowed because of the plans to free Predathos, she realized why the matter was so delicate for the halfling. The wizard spent part of the night reading the documents and runes she had taken from the temple, learning about the magical nature of the Judicators and about the political ambitions of Vasselheim in the territory of the Valley Coalition; by the end of it, she was feeling proud and satisfied, since in the past two days she had put her skills to excellent use. The next morning Joan kept her promise and allowed Bells Hells to use her scrying well three times. Since Prism didn't urgently need to keep an eye on anyone (beyond catching a glimpse of her home plane, the Shadowfell), she allowed her friends to use that opportunity instead of her, although she did ask Elder Abaddina if she could make a spell scroll, so that she could learn Scrying on her own; when the old half-giant granted her wish (giving her not only the scroll, but also a beautiful mirror to use as focus) the wizard was delighted with the beauty and quality of the parchment. After the party decided to travel to the Irriam Canyon to ask the Archdruid Hevestro for help in returning to their respective homes, Prism and her friends left Hearthdell.
"A Long Walk of Reflection" (3x62)[]
While traveling through the Serratus Wilderness Prism apologized to her friends in case they were uncomfortable about her having the ability to summon demons (being reassured when they told her it wasn't a problem), and offering advice and theories to Bor'Dor (who rejected the hypothesis that Pelor had given him his powers and that was why the angel had given him that strange look). Prism sent Dynios to help Mother and Pâté looking for a good place to spend the night, and before going to sleep she experimented a bit with Bor'Dor's crossbow (carving Draconic runes to give it, if briefly, the properties of the Dragon's Breath spell, although damaging the weapon a bit) and later helped him practice his magic with an improvised dummy. Later, when the half-elf tried his Calm Emotions spell, he cast it on several people, including Prism, and she was so relaxed she fell asleep instead of Trancing like she would normally do.
The following day, when the group found a flowery crater with a petrified skeleton in it, she entered following Orym's example, and Identified the remains, revealing they belonged to a githzerai; with Deni$e's help, she deduced that there had been some arcane element in that place, some sort of punishment for the being that had fell from the sky, and later she determined the impact had happened centuries ago. When the wizard asked Dynios about a ring that had been found in the githzerai's finger, he answered with annoyance, which caused her to retort angrily and refuse to know more about her sentient spellbook's past, Identifying the ring by herself; however, at nightfall, when Prism tried to apologize for her attitude, Dynios encouraged her to be more confident in the future. Before going to bed, Ashton let her use their Pipe of Remembrance, and the smoke showed how a young Prism convinced a mage from the Cobalt Soul to let him go to the Material Plane with him. She confessed to her friends that she feared how her mother had reacted to her absence, admitting that she hadn't returned because she felt that she had accomplished nothing remarkable in the decade she had spent on Exandria, though in the last few days she had finally felt useful; when Bor'Dor assured her that her mother was probably proud she had pursued her dreams, the shadow elf cried a little. That night Orym woke her up when several local spirits approached their camp, and she confirmed that they were friendly, encouraging the halfling to enjoy the moment, and casting Bigby's Hand for him to dance on top of with the eidolons, practicing postures of the Zeph'aeratam.
The third day Prism thanked Ashton for the moment with the pipe and they spoke for a bit about his own academic and adventuring experience. Since she had already copied the Scrying spell in her spellbook, she cast it to find Jesper, Bor'Dor's brother, but she could only find their home, empty; she later tried the same spell to find Ludinus, using one of her trading cards as a visual reference, but the archmage had arcane protection against such magical effects, so she failed; for dinner she cast Enlarge to make the fish Bor'Dor caught bigger. Before going to sleep the whole group talked a bit about Predathos, Ruidus, and how to properly face Ludinus; Prism admitted that, although a big change in the world would probably benefit the gloomy Shadowfell, and even if she wasn't strong enough to fight Ludinus, she was also willing to do research and use knowledge to help with the cause. That night she actively slept again.
When the adventurers reached the Irriam Canyon, Prism descended (although not very gracefully, which made her cast False Life on herself) using Laudna's Feather Fall, but before that she invigorated Mother and herself with Mage Armor, and Enlarged the raven so she could help Orym descend to the bottom of the crevasse. When she saw the waterfall there, the wizard sent Dynios's spectral form to check behind it, which he did, returning very annoyed because of the water, confirming there was nothing there. After avoiding a large sleeping creature camouflaged as a flowery hill, the group entered a cave filled with prismatic crystals, and when Bor'Dor took a shard, Prism did a little experiment with it, casting Ray of Frost through it, which split the cantrip into nine rays of cold energy, albeit weaker than the original. The shadar-kai was very interested by this effect, telling Laudna about it and later paying a lot of attention to her surroundings, to check the crystal formations and make sure there wasn't any kind of traditional or arcane trap.
"A Haunted Past" (3x63)[]
Bells Hells encountered Evithorir the Taker, a shadow entity that had claimed the Verdant Tomb and its content and wasn't welcoming towards the adventurers. Prism immediately was suspicious about its nature and was able to identity it as a dark fey. She told Ashton about those entities' alleged weakness to cold iron. When they started fighting the creature the shadow elf cast Greater Invisibility on herself to attack the creature without being seen. While she was hit by some attacks, she Counterspelled some of the Taker's magic, and when the adventurers managed to free Hevestro from his captor's shadowy grasp, Prism sent him to Ashton via Dimension Door for protection.
After the fight, despite being hurt, the wizard took the chance to speak with Hevestro and ask him about the githzerai, but he didn't know much more than she did. Later, when Deni$e started interrogating a very suspicious Bor'Dor, he revealed that he had been lying to the group. Prism was very surprised, and when Bor'Dor cast Vitriolic Sphere and tried to flee, Prism fell unconscious feeling betrayed by one whom she thought was her fellow inexperienced adventurer. Orym protected her and fed her a potion, and when they managed to restrain Bor'Dor, Prism punched him in the face, leaving him at death's door, since Laudna was also attacking him with magic. Knowing what was coming next, Ashton pushed the shadar-kai away a bit and turned her around, so she wouldn't see Bor'Dor die. After everything was over Deni$e comforted Prism for a while, who then proceeded to stomp on the grave of her former friend, yelling at him, apologizing, and starting all over again. After that she felt ready to talk to Laudna, still very shaken after killing the other sorcerer. Prism tried to comfort her about both that and the possibility of an old enemy of hers coming back. Both of them agreed that while they were still angry at Bor'Dor, they were also sad about his death.
The next morning Prism chatted with Ashton, confessing her desire to continue adventuring rather than return to her life with the Cobalt Soul, and accepted the genasi's advice on potential destinations (he told her to go annoy Percival de Rolo in Whitestone, and Deni$e also mentioned her own city, Kymal, as a destination). When Prism discussed the matter with Dynios, he was more than willing. Later, the group divided Bor'Dor's possessions, and Prism took his Bandana of Disguise which turned into a hat on top of her beret. Thanks to her Scrying spell, her friends were able to locate both Dariax and the other members of Bells Hells, so that Hevestro could take them there with his Transport via Plants spell. Thinking of future Scryings, Prism asked for something from each of her new friends, taking some strands of hair and in Ashton's case, some amethyst-looking shards. Prism told Deni$e to use the tree portal created by Hevestro first, and the dwarf was sent to Westruun to find her ex. Prism decided at the last minute she wanted to visit Marquet with the others, and when Hevestro opened a new portal to Jrusar Prism Enlarged Mother and jumped through it with her, holding on like a hang-glider, not realizing at first that Orym, Ashton and Laudna were also going there.[21]
"Reunited" (3x64)[]
Orym used his sword's vines to help Prism, so she wouldn't fall down the cliff, and although she initially had intended a dramatic farewell after crossing the portal, she stayed with her new friends for a little bit longer. She had much interest in starting her independent investigations about Predathos, and Ashton and Laudna talked to her about the Ascension's Rise University and the Starpoint Conservatory, both in Jrusar. She started rehearsing how to present herself as a high mage of the Cobalt Soul to have easy access in such places of learning; the wizard used an interaction with a scared gnome courier to practice, but when the man walked away the shadar-kai gave up, sending Mother instead to Identify the courier's missive.
When all the members of Bells Hells were reunited Prism introduced herself as a high mage, and she told them about her adventures in Issylra, explaining briefly Bor'Dor's betrayal (and claiming he had died because of her punch), and sharing her knowledge about ley nexuses and how they were affecting magic. The wizard behaved in a friendly manner towards the other adventurers, offering her knowledge gained in the past few days, though sharing a tense moment with Fresh Cut Grass, who was so tense from being around Mother that they tried to Banish the raven familiar, being Counterspelled by Prism. She and Dynios helped Bells Hells answering some questions, and eventually it was decided that Prism would join Deanna Leimert and FRIDA on a research mission, in order to acquire useful information to share with the main party; the shadow elf agreed, and had a brief conversation with FCG, promising to prove her worth by protecting FRIDA (who didn't quite trust her due to how nervous she had made their romantic partner feel), and hoping the cleric would do the same with Orym. Prism gave Laudna a clump of her hair in case they needed to Scry on her, and Imogen gave the wizard the letter Eshteross made for her to grant access to the Starpoint Conservatory.
The shadar-kai began to say goodbye to his three friends, reminding Laudna that she would love for them to visit the Shadowfell together one day, Enlarging Orym to show her vision of him, and presenting Ashton with a quill and paper in case they wanted to try to meditate and relax through writing. After unsummoning Mother as a last gesture to make FCG and FRIDA feel better, Prism left with the gunslinger and Deanna.
Relationships[]
Matron of Ravens[]
Prism has a complicated relationship with the Raven Queen because (among other reasons) she feels that her actions are sometimes contradictory;[22] more specifically, she found it strange that the goddess trusted in and defended death and fate, and yet she removed herself from that cycle by ascending and becoming immortal. She essentially admired and respected the Matron of Death, although she couldn't worship her as others did.[23]
The wizard thinks she disappointed the goddess of fate by leaving the Shadow Realm, considering herself her a "prodigal daughter", but despite that she still dedicates little prayers to her when using her shadar-kai powers, or using blood for a spell.[24]
Her mother[]
Prism loves her mother (although she is a little annoyed that she named her "Prism" in a place as depressing as the Shadow Realm) and values her opinion very much, which is why she did not tell her in person that she was planning to travel to the Material Plane, and she was nervous about returning home without having achieved something that would make the years spent away from her family worthwhile.[25] When she summoned her raven familiar for the first time, Prism named her Mother, in honor of her own mother and the Matron of Ravens.
Dynios[]
A mage whose soul is permanently trapped in Prism's wizard spellbook, which now serves as his body, he is also Prism's chaperone from the Cobalt Soul. Using her Manifest Mind ability, Prism can spectrally summon Dynios and cast spells through him at a distance. Although they don't always agree, they seem to have shared some personal information with each other, and even if reluctantly, Dynios obeys her commands in battle. Given his appreciation for the arcane arts, he seemed genuinely impressed whenever Prism cast a powerful spell successfully.
While they went on adventures together, the sealed mage, despite continuing to often protest, began to show more appreciation towards Prism, encouraging her to be more confident, and later supporting her idea that neither of them return to the Cobalt Reserve in Emon.
It is possible that the Cobalt Soul assigned Dynios and Prism together because both of them hail from the same location in another plane, Obleris.
Bor'Dor Dog'Son[]
Prism initially showed some jealousy when she learned that Bor'Dor had obtained his magical powers without having to study, though she ended up being flattered when the sorcerer suggested that he could learn from her.[26] Shortly afterward she decided that the half-elf was really interesting, wanting to write about him the most despite being surrounded by other fascinating people.[27] The morning after talking to him during their watch she wanted to cheer him up and tried to summon a magic mount for him.[28] She felt comfortable enough with him to ask him for favors or give him advice on his magic.[29]
When Bor'Dor revealed his true story, loyalty and his experience in combat, Prism felt betrayal for the first time and stayed angry with him even after he died, although she also felt bad for him.[30]
Orym[]
Prism has great admiration for Orym, blushing when he helped her in battle,[31] looking very happy when he gave her a flower, and following his example in complicated situations, trusting his judgment.[32]
She would later declare that she considered Orym her new best friend, due to the experiences shared together (although this caused some amused tension with Laudna and Ashton, who had also shared similar experiences with the wizard). She admitted that she might be confusing battle mechanics with friendship, although it appeared she had something of a crush on Orym.[33]
Deanna Leimert[]
Prism apologized to Deanna after talking harshly about Pelor, since the cleric was a follower of the Dawnfather, and was worried about her opinion. Later, when Deanna made a joke about her armor, Prism, flustered, interpreted it as flirting.[34]

Unknown source spells[]
It is unclear how Prism gained access to the following spells without multiclassing. Possible explanations are feats such as Magic Initiate, or backgrounds such as Boros Legionnaire, Lorehold Student, or Silverquill Student, that, despite needing some adaptation to fit the world of Exandria instead of Ravnica or Arcavios, would allow Prism to expand her wizard spell list.

Trivia[]
- Her surname, Grimpoppy, may reference the dark and gloomy plane that was her home, since poppies are popular symbols connected to sleep and death.
- Prism is the fourth player character who is confirmed not to be from the Prime Material Plane, the others being Yu Suffiad and Morrighan Ferus (from the Fey Realm), and Fy'ra Rai (from the Elemental Plane of Fire).[97]
- Before defining which type of character Prism would be, Emily Axford considered making her a necromancer[98] or a paladin of the Bloody Siren.[99] She also proposed that she, Aimee Carrero and Utkarsh Ambudkar should create characters that were triplets, with only two of them being identical.[100]
- The animation on her stat card appears to be a rotating magic circle.[101]
- Matthew Mercer showed Emily clips of the Matron of Ravens interacting with Vax'ildan, which made her more interested in her character's connection to the goddess and the Shadow Realm.[102]
- In Not Another D&D Podcast Emily played a chronurgist called Fia Boginya, who had an animated spellbook, Bukvar, that acted as her familiar. It is possible that Bukvar served as an inspiration for Dynios, although the former was more cowardly around Fia, while the latter is more arrogant in relation to Prism.
- Emily lamented that Prism didn't know the Gift of Gab spell.[103] This is because in A Court of Fey & Flowers (the fourteenth season of Dimension 20, GMed by Aabria Iyengar), her character, Lady Chirp Featherfowl, cleverly used that spell more than once to avoid the consequences of impulsive conversation, rewriting the most recent memories of her interlocutors.
- Taliesin Jaffe compared Prism to a version of Lala Orange with the colors changed.[104]
- Prism stated that the most interesting fact about her was that until she was ten, she could do a back walkover unassisted.[105]
- She smokes cigarettes.[106]
- According to herself she holds the record for the longest apprenticeship with the Cobalt Soul,[107] although it is not clear if she is being literal or dramatic.
- She is aware (thanks to Fearne) that there is a shop in Jrusar called "Prism Emporium", and although she doesn't think it is related to her, she is very excited to visit it in the future.
- She meditates through writing,[108] and finds reading the most relaxing time of her daily life.[109]

She left the Shadowfell with the help of a mage she met when she was "tiny" (presumably a child), becoming so helpful that he agreed to bring her to the Cobalt Soul, where she spent ten years studying. She looks like a young adult physically, and although it is unknown how long she acted as an apprentice for the mage in the Shadow Realm, the difference between her tiny self and her current self suggests it happened during her first decades of life (since in that period elves grow up just as humans, and after that they age very slowly, so Prism wouldn't have looked too tiny compared to how it looks now). Therefore, although her exact age is currently unknown, Prism must be at least two decades old.
