A portable hole is a magical item that can be used to access an extradimensional space, which can be used for storage.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The portable hole looks like a silky black handkerchief.[3][1]

Properties[]

The handkerchief-like item can be unfolded into a six- to ten-foot diameter circle and placed on a flat, solid surface, at which point it becomes the opening of a ten-foot-deep hole. It does not create tunnels through a solid surface as the hole is extraplanar,[1] but it can be used for storage and creatures can crawl in and out of it. If it is folded up again, anything inside remains in the extradimensional space[4] with about ten minutes of air.[5]

A creature within the unfolded hole can see and hear outside it, but cannot itself be seen or heard.[6]

History[]

Bells Hells found a portable hole at the Trove of Marwa and tested it out before purchasing it for 1500 gold. Fearne went inside and saw a few garments, as well as a broken chest. The party briefly folded the hole back up, and then unfolded it again, and Fearne seemed unaffected.[7] The next day, the group decided to put it in the trusted hands of Fearne Calloway.[8] She later passed it to Ashton because she felt she wasn't good at keeping track of its contents.[9]

When Bells Hells captured Armand Treshi, they put him in the hole for easier transport, remembering to open it every ten minutes to allow him some air.[10] They later used the hole to create a passage underneath a locked gate at the Shiver Keep, trapping two pursuing guards inside it. This time, they purposely did not periodically open the hole and the guards suffocated.[11]
