Paragon's Call is a mercenary group and crawler gang originating in the Hellcatch Valley of Marquet.[3]
Description[]
Paragon's Call is primarily motivated by who will pay them the most, rather than by any specific principles, and are known for their efficiency.[4]
While their clothing and armor is casual and mismatched, many of them have gold or brass bands on parts of their armor matching the pendant of the Duskmaven they all wear.[5] Their only official uniform is a mustard yellow cloak.[6]
History[]
Background[]
Paragon's Call were notorious within the Hellcatch Valley for their brutality[7] and remembered by Ashton Greymoore as not, "a legitimate group of people."[8] They rose to prominence during the Apex War between Aeshanadoor and the Stratos Throne.[9] They later moved operations into Jrusar and began making efforts to appear both more socially acceptable and official.[10] In fact, the series of "arcane mishaps" that brought Bells Hells together, such as the animated objects attacking civilians, were intended to make the streets of Jrusar feel unsafe to provide a pretext for bringing in the Paragon's Call to help keep the peace.[11]
In the past, Paragon's Call had worked with the Green Seekers but demonstrated profoundly brutal methods of solving problems, earning a bad reputation with the detective agency.[12]
"A Woodworker's Quandary" (3x08)[]
The group later called Bells Hells noticed an announcement on the job board at the Spire by Fire Inn calling for the Chandei Quorum to approve the authority of the Paragon's Call to help restore peace in Jrusar and quash the Hubatt Corsairs.[13]
"A Dance of Deception" (3x13)[]
General Ratanish and multiple other members of Paragon's Call were present at the Masquerade Ball hosted by the Chandei Quorum in their chambers. Ratanish was approached by Vali Dertrana when he saw Ashton Greymoore wearing the costume of the Nightmare King. Ratanish immediately confronted Ashton, snatching away his mask and leading to a duel between them.[14]
"In Too Deep" (3x14)[]
Ratanish eventually defeated Ashton in their fistfight duel, leading to mutual respect between them. Following his victory, Ratanish used the opportunity to advertise the group's services and availability for hire to the assembled crowd. Lord Eshteross noted that Paragon's Call had recently been making an effort to become more official.[15] Ratanish also extended an offer of employment to Ashton, should they be seeking more interesting jobs.[16]
"Promise and Potential" (3x22)[]
Bells Hells learned that following the fall of Armand Treshi from power, his push for Paragon's Call to be hired by Jrusar had been put on hold, and he had fled to its home city of Bassuras.[17]
"A Taste of Tal'Dorei" (3x25)[]
In Bassuras in search of Treshi, the party learned that he was known to be quite involved with Paragon's Call, and was probably within its stronghold the Seat of Disdain.[18] Bells Hells scouted the stronghold, and Fearne was able to get inside it in the form of a quokka. She saw Ratanish inside, but not Treshi, as well as a multitude of well-dressed and -armored foot soldiers for the organization.
"Hidden Truths" (3x26)[]
The next day, the party was visited and threatened by a group of Paragon's Call gang members. Their scouting the previous day had been observed. Ashton told them that Ratanish had invited them to join the Call and they were given 24 hours to contact Ratanish.[19] Later, Orym confirmed Treshi was within the Seat of Disdain. Justi Pross, the leader of the crawler gang All-Minds-Burn, suggested that the party challenge Paragon's Call to compete in the Deathwish Run.[20]
"A Race for the Prize" (3x27)[]
After purchasing a crawler, Bells Hells visited the Seat of Disdain, where they were welcomed by General Ratanish. However, the gang's true leader was apparently Otohan Thull, who told them that in order to prove their worth, they needed either to fight, or to successfully compete in the Deathwish Run.[21]
"The Deathwish Run" (3x28)[]
At the start of the Run, Imogen noticed General Ratanish and Otohan Thull observing from a distance, and realized Otohan was the woman appearing in Imogen's dreams. Bells Hells defeated Paragon's Call's crawler (which was painted with the name "Jamil Toetaker") when Orym expended his Chromatic Rose to cast a cone of lightning on it, sending the driver flying to impale himself on the back of Chetney and Laudna's crawler, and Ashton used Density Well to brake in front of the crawler, causing it to slam into the back of Ashton's crawler and destroy itself. Ratanish and Otohan met the party at the finish line to tell them they had been accepted into the Call and would be given quarters in the barracks.
"A Stage Set" (3x32)[]
Bells Hells went to the Seat of Disdain and were welcomed by General Ratanish. A large mammoth-crawler was being loaded with crates for a delivery scheduled to leave the next day to a mysterious location. Ashton recognized some of the crates as being the same as those in Jiana Hexum's house that had contained a magical gray liquid, and these were labeled "Treshi". There were also two additional cube-shaped crates marked with the symbol of the Cerberus Assembly.
A minotaur named Rockmond gave the party a tour of the fortress and told them not to go to the basement. Fresh Cut Grass Located Armand Treshi in the basement. Chetney cast Invisibility on himself and found Treshi reading inside a luxurious prison cell. When he joined the others, they heard shouting calling all the soldiers into the courtyard, where they saw flashes of fire near the loaded mammoth-crawler and heard cries to "Defend the load!"
"The Apogee Solstice" (3x51)[]
Several members of the Call were present in the Tishtan excavation site, and presumably fought in the Battle of the Red Center.
"Embattled in Bassuras" (3x70)[]
After the beginning of the solstice Paragon's Call returned to Bassuras under the command of General Ratanish, who forced the locals to stay within the city and made Imahara Joe and Verna the Viper work for him building weapons to use against skyships, such as a brumestone nullifier.
When Bells Hells visited Bassuras they went to Imahara Joe's just when Ratanish and six of his people (including a rogue, a monk and a desert warden druid) were there. A battle ensued, and the adventurers killed the seven mercenaries, taking some of their belongings and keeping some of the bodies.
