Otis Brunkel was a halfling blood hunter affiliated with The Tombtakers.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Otis is a female[5] halfling, who goes by all pronouns,[6] with wild curly hair and large, oval,[7] shifty eyes.[8] They dressed in darker leather armor, with a crossbow at their side. Their expression is a bit gaunt and sallow.[9]
Personality[]
Due to their bad experiences in Trostenwald Otis was careful and skeptical about new things they didn't necessarily understand.[10]
Biography[]
Otis was from Trostenwald,[11] and like their mother, they served a powerful local family. However, when said family fell out of favor due to their corruption, everyone who had associated with them was affected socially, including Otis and his mom, who ended up going into indigence.[12]
At some point before 829 PD, Otis joined the Claret Orders out of boredom,[13][14] training in the Oltu Ruins for some time and learning the secrets of hemocraft; they were on friendly terms with Lucien Tavelle, Cree Deeproots, and Brevyn Oakbender.[15]
In 831 PD, Otis and several members of the Orders traveled to Rexxentrum and spent several months there, some of them even meeting with Vess DeRogna from the Cerberus Assembly to present her with a relic at some point, although Otis wasn't part of that deal; the archmage secretly paid Lucien Tavelle by giving him information about where his sister Aldreda lived,[16] and since Brevyn didn't trust the archmage and her information, she asked Otis to follow Lucien to ensure his well-being. At the end of their stay in the capital, the three of them, along with Cree, decided to return to Shadycreek Run.[17]
In Brevyn's hometown, they came across other members of the Order, Zoran Kluthidol, Tyffial Wase, and Briyakar Jurrell, who had been living in Auntie Mama's house for a while after she was killed by Reese Jagentoth for smuggling for the Mardoons, two years before.[18] Despite Brevyn's desire for revenge, the group ended up deciding to recover Auntie Mama's remains instead, in order to give her a proper farewell instead of having her where the Jagentoths kept those who betrayed them.[19] That adventure started their group, which would be known as the Tombtakers,[20] and although they lived for a while in Brevyn's house (Auntie Mama left it to her in her will),[21] with Otis and Jurrell overseeing a tense property exchange just outside the gates of the town,[22] eventually the Jagentoths tried to attack them, stopping only because Vess DeRogna appeared and bargained for their lives, so she could hire the Tombtakers herself.[23] One of their missions was in Molaesmyr, were they fought hags and reached the tower of Caes Mosor.[24]
The Tombtakers eventually accompanied the archmage in an expedition to Aeor, but the mission ended in tragedy when Brevyn died recovering a journal for Lucien.[25][26] Since they weren't able to recover Brevyn's body, the Tombtakers honored her in a lake near Balenpost.[27] The group, after the archmage's payment (which would end up disappearing), traveled to Yardel, Jurrell's hometown, and in that time Lucien, who had been reading the journal, gained new knowledge and power from the Somnovem.[28][29] That knowledge was shared with his friends and they decided to use that power to shape the world according to their wishes and make it a better place for them; Otis wanted to see the land cured from disease and live forever with good health.[30]
In 833 PD, the Tombtakers reached out to Vess DeRogna[31] and she came to oversee and perform a ritual that would allow Lucien to reach the Somnovem.[32] However, the archmage sabotaged the ritual and killed Lucien.[33][34][35] The group waited until dawn, and their leader had told them that if anything were to go wrong, they had to get rid of any sign, any trace, so, not far from their hideout, they buried him and went their separate ways, to different points of the Dwendalian Empire.[36] During that time Otis ran a card den with Tyffial in Nogvurot until they had problems with the law.[37] After that the halfling moved back to Shadycreek Run.
In 836 PD, when Lucien was resurrected, Otis was there with the rest of the surviving Tombtakers (Jurrell had been executed).[38] The tiefling wanted to return to Eiselcross as soon as possible, wanting to sell Jurrell's jewel that Tyffial (her beloved) had inherited, which she refused, only letting Jurrell's memory go after the Nonagon forced her to do it with his powers, after which he erased her memories about the argument and the jewel itself.[39] Otis was the one who found a buyer for the jewel in Shadycreek Run, getting enough gold to travel directly to Syrinlya.[40]
During their journey to Aeor, Otis began to lose weight due to the conditions of the march and the scarcity of food.[41] Furthermore, the cold put them at risk of losing toes from frostbite.[42] When the Tombtakers started traveling with the Mighty Nein (the group of adventurers that had befriended Mollymauk Tealeaf, born from Lucien's shattered soul, while he lived), initially Otis and Veth Brenatto bonded over both being halflings in parties consisting of larger people, though this relationship was quickly tarnished when Veth tried and failed to cast Phantasmal Force on Otis.[43] This developed into running hostility where Veth began actively trying to kill Otis whenever possible.[44]
Later on their journey, during the fight with Gelidon, Otis (inspired by the Somnovem) stole Fjord's bag, which contained the threshold crest the Tombtakers needed,[45] which led to a chase and battle with the Mighty Nein. This marked the end of the tense truce between the two groups. During the battle, Otis used their eldritch powers to slow their enemies when they tried to flee.[46]
When they were almost in Aeor, the Mighty Nein staged an ambush in which they managed to kill all the members of the Tombtakers except for Lucien and Cree. The blood cleric briefly tried to help an unconscious Otis, but she ended up casting Dimension Door with her cloak to keep herself and Lucien away from danger.[47] After that, Veth killed Otis by shooting them with her crossbow through the mouth;[48] their head was taken in case Caduceus Clay needed to cast Speak with Dead.[49]
Later on, before Lucien and Cree crossed through the Immensus Gate to reach the Astral Plane, the echo in the tiefling's mind used the memory of Otis and the rest of the ambushed Tombtakers to make the Nonagon feel guilty, albeit to little avail.[50]
