Description[]

Appearance[]

Oppy is a very short ribbet with slimy sapphire blue skin with yellow freckles and yellow eyes. He wears stripped overalls and clothes made of leaves. He carries with him a sparkling smoking staff that is actually a cigarillo for a larger creature.[2]

Personality[]

Oppenheimer is a happy, polite and enthusiastic individual.

Biography[]

Background[]

Oppy and Sweetpea were raised together as siblings. Eventually, they teamed up with the Menagerie and became adventurers.

"Critical Role plays Daggerheart" (Sx83)[]

When the Menagerie was looking for their first job Oppy and Pango Small suggested to work for free in order to attract clients and show their skills; they ended up following that plan when people from the Velvet Grove appeared asking for help fixing their home.

After staying for a bit in the house of a veteran adventurer, Everett, the Menagerie went to the forest, finding signs of corruption that both Oppy and his sister examined. Later, when they were attacked by hedge bears, Oppenheimer was badly injured by one of them after trying to use his magic against them; however, Kexon Peros healed him, and with the help of Sir Danté Terrapin, the ribbet managed to defeat the last of the monsters. That wasn't their last battle in the forest: shortly after finding the corpse of Wild Cullen (Xarlo Grandall's friend) they were attacked by more animals, and Oppy used his magic to cast Unleash Chaos against them; after that, when they finally found the source of the corruption they were attacked by a mindless Boko, the Glen Warden. While fighting the corrupted entity Oppy noticed a red glow that helped his party determine how to cleanse the corruption, freeing Boko in the process.

"The Menagerie Returns!" (Sx84)[]

The adventurers (minus Pango, who went underground to do his own research) decided to go to Bunnie's hometown in order to find Dyson, and when they finally arrived, a few days later, Oppy was very impressed, although he didn't understand why some people were offering time with them for money. The faun brought them to the Lily Locket Lounge, a theatre full of performers and art. There, a magician tried to impress Oppy with one of his tricks, but Kexon used his own skills to expose him by revealing the secret of said trick; later they encouraged Bunnie to perform instead of an injured co-worker, Lamont, and thanks to that same performer (who gave Oppy her broken shoe to put it in his staff, since he was so cute), they learned that Dyson had been seen in town recently.

Following the clues they had, the adventurers went to a casino, where Oppy and Sweetpea joined Xarlo in the tables while Kexon and Bunnie located Dyson; after some interrogation, they learned that he had taken a "package" to the forest on the orders of Mortimer Kroatona, a member of the local mafia family. They went into the sewers looking for Mortimer, and although Oppy was leading them, he ended up being swept away by the current; Kexon used Time Lock to lock his friend's staff in space and time, allowing him to hold on and use Blink Out to reach a safe space, although with all the panic the sorcerer temporarily forgot how to cast Unleash Chaos. Eventually they found a secret basement with Mortimer and some of his agents inside. A battle ensued, and Oppy used fire to attack; at one point he teamed up with Sir Danté, and he was shocked when the galapa made a joke about frog legs (directed at Mortimer, who was also a ribbet). After the fight was over the group (using magic and lies) convinced Mortimer that his men had betrayed him, and Oppy subtly put out the fire he had been using against the gangster. Mortimer was initially convinced, but as they were leaving, more gangsters arrived, and Mortimer got more suspicious. The members of the Menagerie looked for ways to escape, and Oppy grabbed Danté and Xarlo and brought them with him casting Blink Out; however, they realized soon after that Bunnie and Sweetpea had been captured.

"Ménagerie a Trois" (Sx85)[]

Oppy was very worried about his sister and Bunnie, and was firmly against leaving them behind; luckily, the two of them managed to escape, meeting the rest of the Menagerie and running away. When they hid in an alleyway, Sweetpea used her magic to disguise the entire group as sexy ladies to avoid being recognized when performing with Bunnie: Oppenheimer chose to look like a blue lady with dark hair and yellow eyes, prominent breasts and an hourglass figure, and wearing leather, little bloomers and high boots.

When they returned to the Lily Locket Lounge they decided that while the rest of the team performed on stage, Kexon and Oppy would do some crowd work, to investigate about a mysterious baron that, according to Mortimer Kroatona, was behind the corruption in the Emerald Sky. While Oppy pretended to be a waitress, Kexon was simply walking among the audience, listening to conversations; at one point they started speaking with two men, and Oppy tried to gain their trust using the disguised faerie (who had chosen the alias "Tata") as bait, but Kexon ended up getting uncomfortable and walked away. After they learned that a performer named Mafauna might have tried to sabotage Bunnie's performance, the adventurers decided to pay her with the same coin, embarrassing her and causing that, at the end of the show, she attacked the Menagerie with her back dancers. Eventually they managed to neutralize Mafauna and her team, making the audience believe it was all a staged fight.

They went to the local mines (closed because of a favor from the baron to the Kroatona family) to investigate, and after some effort and guile using the remaining time with their sexy disguises, the Menagerie reached a cave in which they found crystals with an abscess of corruption, and a glowing hydra defending it. The adventurers fought the monster, and but it regenerated every time they wounded it. However, when they realized it was connected to the crystals, they destroyed them, causing the creature to stop glowing, losing its regeneration and allowing the party to kill it.

Trivia[]

  • Ashley named her character "Oppy Betabean" because of the cast riffing off during their session zero by repeating out loud "Open Beta" when Matt Mercer said those words.[3]
  • Oppy's pronouns were originally she/they, but Ashley changed her mind between session zero and The Menagerie's first appearance.
  • Oppy and Sweetpea often avoid their elders' punishments by distracting them.
  • Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey insinuated that Oppy was raised by Sweetpea's fungril family, although they joked about the possibility of making all but the rogue ribbets.[4]
  • Ashley is very interested in learning who was the original owner of Oppy's staff.[5]
