The Occultus Thalamus is a recording device created by Aeorian mages and/or scientists prior to the destruction of the city at the hands of the gods.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Occultus Thalamus was held in a massive domed chamber with a ceiling formed of a quartz-like latticework and intricately rune-carved golden beams. In its center were two statues of robed mages holding lanterns, which flanked the Thalamus, a domed and riveted construction.[1] When Ludinus activated it, the central cracked dome opened and a light green orb emerged, forming "an endlessly fractal network of threads of Arcane power",[2] a cantaloupe-sized ball of ribbons of swirling arcane energy.[3]
Properties[]
The Thalamus was a device to record everything that happened to anyone in the city of Aeor, just prior to its destruction by the gods. Matthew Mercer compared it to the orb owned by Patia Por'co in the contemporaneous city of Avalir.[4] However, this surveillance device, like much of Aeorian technology, was tuned to divine threads,[5] tracking, reading, and recording the essence and location of souls within the city.[6] Matthew Mercer described it as: "The Occultus Thalamus uniquely stores more information from powers that are attuned to its arcane technology than even it anticipated."[7]
History[]
The Occultus Thalamus was created a hundred years past the time of the fall of the flying city of Avalir,[8] toward the end of the era of Aeor.[9] It was developed knowing that war was coming.[8]
In 843 PD, Astrid Becke told Bells Hells and Essek Thelyss that Ludinus Da'leth had spent the better part of the last five years within and around the Genesis Ward, working with (or toward) something called the Occultus Thalamus.[10] Essek was unaware of what the Occultus Thalamus was, but led the party to the Genesis Ward's eighth and ninth floors where he had heard rumors of its existence.[11][12] When the party encountered Ludinus, he told them that he had spent "a day or so" studying it and that it held something they would want to see, and then activated it.[13]
Trivia[]
- "Occultus Thalamus" translates roughly to "hidden chamber" in Latin.
- Matthew Mercer compared it with a black box.[14]
